Truly has potential, it would seem to have the ability to kill many BUT to put it in perspective, theres this:

Not downplaying it's danger, just putting it in perspective.

2019-2020 U.S. Flu Season: Preliminary Burden Estimates

29,000,000 – 41,000,000
flu illnesses

^^^I urge everyone to peruse this link. It gives the demographic breakdown for coronavirus fatalities.

Apparently, this virus is mostly killing off those aged 70+ especially in those with compromised immune systems. NO KIDS UNDER 9 HAVE DIED FROM CORONAVIRUS. And the death rate among those with no pre-existing conditions is less than 1%.

Really puts it into perspective. In other words, the Coronavirus is behaving just like every other flu bug that goes around every year.

Iceaxe

Do the math...
0.1% of those with the flu die
2.1% of those with Coronavirus die

That's 29 times higher then the flu... The Coronavirus is much worse then the flu.... if you believe that Coronavirus is comparable to the flu you are falling for the fake news that China is currently trying to push.

Understand what a 2.1% death rate actually is...that means if you went to a Utah football game and everyone has Coronavirus 1000 people in the stadium would be dead when you walked out.

Not to mention you can get a flu vaccine and greatly reduce your odds of dying and no such vaccine yet exists for Coronavirus.

Coronavirus is an extremely nasty virus, don't be fooled into thinking it's not by fake news.

Most people dying from Coronavirus are the same demographic that died from the bird flu, swine flu and the "general flu".

They die from something else, complications that evolved like pneumonia, respiratory issues, weakened immune system...

The Coronavirus is also being assigned to a large portion of patients that have the usual flu symptoms, so numbers can be skewed. My son was diagnosed with the Swine Flu when it was out, and once that WSU professor died "from the Swine Flu", everybody went nuts. But what she REALLY died from was pneumonia, and the swine flu virus was also detected.

It's not the flu that kills people, it's the complications that evolve into other disorders and illnesses. It's like "going to prison for Marijuana", nobody is serving prison time because they smoked weed. They had it on them while committing a bigger crime, and it was just another checkmark on the list.

Stay calm, wash your hands and take your vitamins.

Once the Democratic candidate is chosen, I promise you the Coronavirus will be a topic of the past, a former clickbait topic.

This is the point I'm trying to make. I believe the issue is being blown way out of proportion.

My sister is in the middle of a painting project at her house and went to the Home Depot to get face masks. They were sold out of every single kind of face mask, and they said the shelves had been cleared off ever since the Coronavirus news broke. They can't keep face masks in stock. I believe it's a tad overhyped.

Sombeech
02-25-2020, 08:32 AM
yeah the dust mask thing is a bit silly, it's for dust not microscopic viruses. Then they'll rub an itch on their face after turning an infected doorknob.

I remember working at Lifetime Products, making the picnic tables and ping pong tables. There was some sort of chemical leak one day, I think it was some acid for the Powder Coating cleaning station, but "Production can't stop", so instead of clearing the area, the supervisors grabbed dust masks for the assembly line people, which did nothing for chemicals. Plus they had their safety glasses on, not sealed goggles but just the normal glasses --- for airborne chemicals.

But we hit quota that day, Walmart was happy.

Sombeech
02-25-2020, 08:33 AM
It was also the same thing after 9/11, all the duct tape, plastic sheeting and generators sold out, because of chemical warfare we had to prepare to seal off the windows, doors and airvents in the house.

Iceaxe
02-25-2020, 08:35 AM
The news over hypes everything. Currently in Utah it's a non issue... but don't be fooled into not taking Coronavirus seriously. It is currently making shambles of China's economy and that will effect us all...

Don’t necessarily blame the local dust mask shortage on CV. A friend of mine just had a baby, and due to fears and apparent high rates of RSV going around, he says he and his wife are wearing dust masks anytime they leave the house.

Is the threat justified? A colleague of mine just had a newborn grandchild die of RSV. Maybe.

Is buying/ wearing a dust mask from HD the proper/ sufficient anecdote to prevent it? Likely not.

There are currently Mediterranean cruises going for very low prices right now because of all this. They have moved all of the cruise ships out of Asia to Europe, so there are tons of them over there and they don't have any people on them. They're just giving it away. I still wouldn't get on one right now. Also, I'm assuming that the issues in Italy and other parts of Europe are not going to help them any.

^^^ This is the primary reason why I haven’ta never will do a cruise ship. Too many stories of stranded boats either due to catastrophic mechanical failure, or quarantine due to epidemic disease. Add to that the simple concept of locking me on a boat with thousands of other people for a week where all I can do is sit in my room, or go to the Up-chuck-o-Rama and stuff my face to gain 10 pounds. Sounds to me more like a prison sentence than a vacation.

No thanks. I like to go out on my own in the outdoors and get as far away from people - that’s my idea of a good vacation.

I've had some clients that love cruises and do them regularly...I've asked "What's the appeal?"

The convenience...they want to be lazy. Not have to think about preparing food or doing anything during the day that is like their normal everyday life. Drink...get a buzz going for 5 straight days and chill.

Chillin'...that's it. Slowing down to a crawl. They also told me that it's nice to be on just one vessel that takes them to different destinations (port calls during the day) so they don't have to fly, rent a car, hire a taxi, deal with traffic, etc...

My wife and I just got back from a cruise in Hawai'i for our 20th anniversary. It was our first cruise. It was a good time. Was it perfect? Nope. Has any vacation I've been on been perfect? Nope.

We did this one because all of the time on the boat was at night as we traveled from one island to the next. The daylight hours were spent on the island doing whatever we wanted. We did some of the shore excursions and we also rented cars on some of the days and did what we wanted. It was a good time.

The only drawback was that I did catch a cold at the end of the week that knocked me out for a few days. That sucked. Otherwise, it was a good time and a good way to see the islands.

A couple of excerpts from a letter I received this morning from Angela Dunn, M.D, Utah State Epidemiologist:

"Though the CDC considers COVID-19 to be a serious public health concern based on current information, the immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low."

"While there are currently no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in Utah, we have investigated – and ruled out – several potential cases. This is not to say we won’t see confirmed cases in the future. In fact, I expect Utah will eventually have confirmed cases, and I am confident we are prepared to handle those cases."

Dems need and _want_ a large scale pandemic. They openly call this his Katrina.

Summary: no worse than “a severe seasonal influenza” in terms of mortality.

"On the basis of a case definition requiring a diagnosis of pneumonia, the currently reported case fatality rate is approximately 2%.4 In another article in the Journal, Guan et al.5 report mortality of 1.4% among 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19; these patients had a wide spectrum of disease severity. If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%. This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively."

What's crazy is that half of them are liberals, who also believe all of the garbage that the same media has been feeding them for 3+ year - Russiagate, Muellergate, Ukrainegate - they eat that stuff up from them. They are smart enough to realize that the media is making stuff up about this virus (although they do fall for every angle to bash on Trump over it), but can't see that the same media has lied to them for so long about everything Trump. On my local town's FB page, they are all believing the same thing, that the media overhype and mass hysteria is much worse than the actual bug, and mocking the media for just blowing this way out of proportion, and the fools who are falling for it. SMH.Yeah, it's a whacky world. Lots of people out there believe in ghosts, too.

Like I've always said...If you go thru life expecting other people to do what YOU would do, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

To me, so many suffer from "Mental Hypochondria".

So, in times of crisis the one thing people want the most is toilet paper....?

Why not canned food, batteries, first aid supplies, candles, water purifier, ammo, etc.....?

I guess what we've learned from this is that folks are woefully unprepared for a major disaster -- and further, folks don't know how to get prepared even when given fair warning.

Or, the bottled water shortage. Is this some virus that's supposed to spoil our local water supply or contaminate our water pipelines? Or, is corona zombies going to chase us from our homes, and we have to go hide out up on the mountains, and thus need to pack bottled water up there?

The mask thing is rediculous as well. All dust masks, which would do nothing for this otherwise miniscule bug, wouldn't do anything to contain it, anyway.

ANd the obsession over hand sanitizer -

My wife just called me from the Costco and said it's like a Saturday over there! Toilet paper is stacked up and down the isles and cases of water. People are going hog wild over the stuff! They are limiting the amount of water and toilet paper you can buy. Some lady had 5 cases of toilet paper in the line. So the checker lady said, "you can only buy 3." My wife was laughing with another lady, just trying to get the basics and didn't buy any toilet paper or water. Unbelievable...

I think a big part of it is a snowball affect. Some see a potential problem from a supply suffer risk and go buy a bunch. Others here of market supply problems, and do a check to realize and acknowledge that they are lacking on their standard emergency preparedness, so they figure they need to correct that by going out and getting the bare core of things they can think off the top of their head they would need in an emergency, and so they naturally just grab as much water and TP as they can get, so they think they are now prepared for the apocalypse and anything less than it. And then there are people who see the aforementioned groups all packing up with stuff, and they don’t know why, so they have to jump in on the panic wagon too. And then you have people like me that look at my supply and know that by natural attrition, I’m going to be out in a couple of months. And with reports and pics everywhere of bare shelves, who knows when they will be restocked or for how long. So, when I was at Sam’s yesterday, I planned to pick up a couple of TP packs - but there was none in sight. Plenty of bottled water tough.

President Trump will speak tonight. This is getting ridiculous.Yeah, if it were up to me, I say just go about your life as you normally would and let's just let this thing run it's course. Older folks should obviously be a bit more careful, but otherwise it's just another flu bug. Social distance, wash your hands and elbow bumps...oh yeah, a national emergency.

Some people are out of their minds with this...a neighbor of mine is walking around with a canister of wipes. She got into her car and wiped down the steering wheel. I know her pretty well and I'm sure she's losing sleep over this.

This is likely to go on for a couple more months. Personally, I very rarely ever get sick...I'd say in the last 10 years I've had the cold/flu bug 3 times and it always gets me in the month of April for some reason.

The Tom Hanks positive might be a turning point in 2 weeks. He will recover. He's 65 with diabetes, a "high risk."

Eventually the hysteria will end and the media will be loathed more. But in the meantime, the economic damage is going to be large. I can't see Q2 not being contraction.

I’ll bet ya that Baseball is next. Any large social gatherings will be cancelled, postponed or on hiatus for at least 3 months.

Local retailers are gonna take a sizeable hit, especially as more and more confirmed cases keep coming out.

Stocks are only going to get lower and lower. [emoji24]

These paragraphs from that article perfectly illustrates the over hype and paranoia going on about this Hunan virus. A couple people are a little sick and everyone is like - meh. Then word breaks out that those people tested positive for a bug with a name, and everyone completely loses their mind.

“There were a couple players who were sick and might not be able to play Wednesday night, nothing out of the ordinary, and everything was going as usual leading up to game time. The music was blaring, the starters had already been announced, the officials had the ball in their hands. The game was seconds from tipping off.

Then it was like a flurry of movement. Someone ran onto the court, the refs and coaches talked for a few minutes and all of a sudden the players were waving to the crowd as they exited the court and headed back toward their respective locker rooms.

It was a frantic time trying to figure out what to do. The Salt Lake Tribune’s Andy Larsen raced toward the court and was stopped at the tunnel leading toward the locker rooms, he wasn’t allowed through. Myself and The Athletic’s Tony Jones immediately started texting and calling team and league personnel trying to figure out what was going on.”

Perhaps a trip this year to Yellowstone, Yosemite, Bryce, and Zion will actually be pretty pleasant!

Jordan school district has not cancelled. We got a call a few hours ago. Murray had a kids Dad who worked at Vivint arena and so they panicked. The U will be online, but they are on spring break anyway and not much left. They can more reasonably handle online and are better setup for it.

I'm working across from a Winco in Midvale today with full view of the parking lot. The parking lot is completely full of course and I've been watching people hustle around and come out with shopping carts filled to brim and sometimes two.

I do know the state superintendent just banned out of state travel for schools. I am a school board member and right now there is no talk of cancelling school in my district. However, this really is an hour by hour situation right now. Would it surprise me if it was cancelled? No. Would it surprise me if it was not? No.

Based on my observations of the reaction and feelings of so many people, it may be a good idea to send everyone home until Monday just to take a deep breath and realize that the water still works, electricity is still on and you can still watch reruns of "The Office" on a half-dozen channels. (And I could get my fruit trees pruned.... :) )

This mass hysteria is getting out of control. More people are going to get sick, more are going to die. The peacock is only going to get worse. Factories are going to shut down. Hit the store just before a big blizzard and then it's mayhem.

What happens in that case is this: eggs, milk, potatoes, avocados, sugar, flour, cheap meat, bananas and most of the rest of fruits and vegetables get scooped up. I walked 1/2 a mile to the store the day after a 2' snow storm and it looked like a bomb went off in there...within 24 hours it was stocked back up.

I don't see a mass panic happening at all...the hype is certainly having an effect on big crowd stuff, but I hardly think it's time to load up the truck with ammo and a bug out kit to head for the hills. Things will mellow out. It's not like people are dropping dead in the street.

That’s good there. I went to two different Smiths - ever checkout was open at both with at least 15 people in line for each with full carts. Sam’s Club was being picked over like a carcus by maggots after the big game animals and vultures had their fill, plus another local grocery store. All flour and sugar shelves completely empty. Bread shelves looking pretty skimpy.

Cashiers at Smiths said it had been crazy like that there all day since they opened. I’ll bet come Saturday morn, it’ll be worse than Black Friday.

I think food production is the big risk. Wait till someone at a meat packing plant, or food distribution center gets tested positive. Then production will shut down. If schools close, many parents don’t have alternative, especially young kids, parents will be taking off work. Add to that the mass hysteria about getting this thing, and more people won’t be going to work. Production of goods could come to a standstill.

I'll load up the shelves in my place early Sat. morn...Lucky for me, I'm a bachelor that lives alone so only two or three hundred bucks will load me up for a solid month or more.

Good point about the meat packing plant...but most of these other goods are packaged with machines. I'm not scared.

The only thing "different" I'm doing is I have a small spray bottle of homemade alcohol solution in my truck with some rags to dry off my hands...blast 'em after getting gas, going into a store, etc...that's it. I might not eat out as much for a while.

EDIT: This might be a "Mormon Thing" too...I recall painting the interior of a house back in the mid 80s. A Mormon family...they had one bedroom stocked to the ceiling with food, water, guns and ammo. He had an Uzi machine gun! They said it was in case of a big earthquake, but my boss told me that Mormons stock up like that as a hedge against lean times...has something to do with the religion.

This might be a "Mormon Thing" too...

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Here in Kaysville/ Farmington, we make up nearly 3/4 of the population.

I’ll admit, I was feeling some of that hunker down prepper fever myself. With all of the craziness in the need of the stock market, NBA and NCAA canceling games, schools etc., Ive been feeling a bit nervous about my emergency food supply. So, I left work a little early today with the intention of hitting Smiths and Sam’s Club for some core basics. On the way home, my wife has asked me to stop and get some prescriptions, then come home and we’d go out shopping together. That s where I caught the full on prepper pneumonia.

i stopped in at Smiths, noticed the parking lot was full at 1:00 on the afternoon. Walking into the store, there were no more carts in the lobby, and there were lines going down one sides of the store to the pharmacy in the corner and then down the drink isle on one side, and down to the produce in the corner on the other.

I texted my wife told her to head to Sam’s Club and get stuff, and that I was going to grab a bunch of stuff and then wait in line for an hour. I grabbed a bunch of frozen meats, canned goods, and dairy, and then jumped into the self checkout line, wether I was in line for 5 min, but spent a good 10 scanning all my food.

When we to Sam’s Club, it was the same. Packed with people, rows of off we’re getting empty, and the lines went half way to the back of the store. ( Thank goodness for their in store shopping cart app - I love that thing. Never have to wait on checkout line. Never appreciated more than today.

Since I still couldn’t find any floor out sugar, went to the Farmington Smiths- Sant story there.

I don’t know if it was like that anywhere else, or if just localized to Utah, northern Utah, or just central Davis County. But it was crazy. Hopefully it will die down. Soon. But I bet at least here, it won’t before the weekend is done.

Touche. Very fair question. Because, like so many other areas of my life, it’s one more thing I’ve neglected for far too long. :2thumbs:

I’m just grateful I did get in about 2 months of food. And despite my initial estimates when I saw the lines, I only ended up in line for a total of about 30 min today. Less time than I would normally food shopping over 2 months accumulative.

This mad dash scramble for emergency supplies is just irrational fear playing out amongst the masses. The thing with fear is that it's just as contagious as the virus itself, perhaps more so.
