It's official. All public school classes suspended for two weeks. I just received an email from my district and boss.

We're to begin implementing online instruction on Monday.

I was Iceaxes little bird. Yesterday and today was extra meetings and training for teaching classes online. It was only a matter of time.

Just got back from the big grocery store up my street...busy as usual but no panic type stuff. Hit the store just before a big blizzard and then it's mayhem.

I take it back...this was the canned goods aisle today. Also, the frozen vegetables were wiped out as well. Cereal aisle, too.

I asked the guy working there how long before they're stocked back up, he said no idea. Funny, there were plenty of fresh fruits and veggies...also, there weren't very many people in there, at least no more than usual. I reckon in a few days or a week things will be "normal" at the grocery stores 'cuz everyone who felt like going apeshit already did.

The diner up the street where I eat breakfast often shut down today until April 6th...although I think the owner is taking advantage of this to do some remodel work.

Many years ago, most folks had considerable canned goods...but I reckon most these days are buying fresher stuff. The only time I see a jam packed pantry or fridge is if there's a bunch of kids in the house. I think this rush for the goods comes from a number of things....kids home from school, restaurants being closed or not really safe places to visit, lots more people working from home, concern that the distribution system may be disrupted, a lot of folks just plain hunkering down (especially the older ones)...so it kinda makes sense that people want to fill the cupboards up.

Sure, the media is hyping the whole thing up like carnival barkers...but I reckon this food thing is more of a natural move by people.

About 5 years ago, I was working a remodel job and there was tile guy in the master bath doing a lot of work. He was good...I got to talking to him.

He was Russian and migrated to the states in the mid 90s. I asked him about how things were when the Soviet Union collapsed, specifically if the distribution system shut down. I wondered why there weren't riots or heavy crime with the entire government collapsing.

He said "What distribution system?" and laughed. He said that EVERYONE saw it coming and were stocked and ready for the long haul. He said Russia was absolutely NOTHING like America in regards to goods and services. Said he'd make more money doing this one tile job than his father would make in an entire year.

On a positive note you can walk into any restaurant in SLC at 7:00 on Friday or Saturday night and be seated immediately... normally you would have at least a 30 minute wait.

And to top it off the wait staff is extra attentive in hopes of a decent tip.

That's a very good point and it got me to thinking about myself. I had bare cupboards and little in my refer 2 weeks ago. I've been that way awhile for exactly those reasons. Getting some supply this past week (like 3 to 4 weeks of canned and dry goods now) has caused me to contribute to the rush. I didn't even have enough for a large blizzard or extended power outage. As a kid, my parents, from depression era and Cuban Missile Crisis and Cold War roots, had a lot of supplies always.

So I hit the store last night, figured I better buy some stuff considering restaurants are closing down. Looks like a bomb went off in there...all the meat, eggs, milk, canned goods were cleaned out and the rest of the store was picked over pretty good. Plenty of candy, though. Also plenty of potato chips, condiments and old school TV dinners.

The TV dinners thing surprised me...ya know, those heat-n-eat things. I figured they'd be gone. People used to eat a lot of those...but I guess no more.

Here's another surprise...this is the Kosher aisle. So either the folks that buy this stuff are already loaded up or even the Jews won't eat this shit. Looks like if things get real bad it'll get down to Matzo balls and Gefilte fish.

Other than hearing a bunch of wannabe bullshit about my friend's cousin has it and one of the guys that used to work for the WalMart here has it, I've yet to hear any firsthand experience from somebody infected. Not a single one.

The closest I get is "I think his name is Dave and he lives in Murray".

I don't know of any yet. I do know that so far the testing we have done all of come back negative (I think about 10), but what I find interesting are the positives H1N1, Strep, Mycoplasma and a few other odds and ends that we normally don't get because people think it is just a cold and deal with it. I am really curious how our positives for other viral infections will spike because of increased testing. I do know a local hospital here in Ogden did have a positive.

I am now working from home for the college and limited trips to campus and staggering when staff is here. And on call for the hospital to go in as needed when testing spikes and they are overloaded which usually happens in the afternoon.

From my perspective this is all incredibly fascinating. I just watched a video on Facebook where 3 women got into a fight over a package of toilet paper... and I thought Christmas was bad.

I have a good friend who works for ARUP, and all he does is run Coronavirus tests, all day, every day. He told me yesterday that they've had a few come back positive, but the overwhelming majority are all negative. He anticipates that there will be more positives, but nothing major.

We just got approval this weekend to start sending our COVID-19 tests to ARUP. We all threw up a cheer! I know several techs that moonlight for ARUP is being pulled in to help with the load. Previously we sent our requests to the state lab.


Walking around campus is like walking through a ghost town. It isn't even like this on Christmas break or spring break. It is very eerie.

I usually don't put much stock into conspiracy theories, but I sure don't trust those Chinese or anything they say for that matter.

Today I got to thinking about a scene from the movie "Signs"...the army recruiter, offering his opinion of the alien ships up in the sky and reports of a few of them stalking around. He said it was a "probe", and "evaluation"...reconnaissance for the main invasion.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a biological weapon that they unleashed...just to gauge our reaction...and it had the desired effect, total mayhem. They're letting us know not to screw with them...I reckon Hong Kong pissed them off real good.

I've heard a few opinions similar to this, but they're always shot down with "Why would they unleash it on their own people"...like they wouldn't do that.

But the realization that it's particularly nasty to the old folks shifted the whole thing...all those up in Seattle that died in the old folks home. Having large numbers of these people being wheeled out in body bags all over the country would not be good...the politicians had to do something...damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Have they overreacted?...probably, maybe, maybe not? I'm not bothered by it...it's like a car steering straight for the only tree on the street as it careens along. Of course it hit the stinking tree. They had no choice, really.

My mom is sick and home with cough and fever... not Covid-19 and she hasn't had a respiratory test to know what it is, really no point. A virus runs its course as long as you don't need medical attention you just go with it. Like I said I don't know anyone personally but positive Covid is happening in our neck of the woods along with a few other Coronaviruses, Metapneumovirus, with Flu A H1N1 being predominate. On Monday there were 29 cases and today we have 78 cases with 68 being native Utahans and 10 visitors. Flu 68 cases in 7 days 9.7 per day so 10 a day. (if the site is up to date and accurate)
Covid-19 49 cases in 3 days 16.3 or 16 per day.

That makes me take this more seriously than I did a week ago when I very much thought they were over reacting.

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

So, If you were incarcerated for committing a real crime, you might get out early, and other crimes you won’t get arrested for at all - because they don’t want inmates to contract and spread the virus. Why- because you might be infected with the virus, and might spread it to the population.... like inmates in prison?


The only thing government does well and consistently is tripping over its own dock and falling flat on its face.
