I guess you could fit just about any treatment from government into the various definitions of abuse if you don't like it. I always believed that the word "abuse" was an extreme act done to a person. So I guess to respond to you, Byron, I have never felt "abused" by my government. Now, that is not to say that I have not felt annoyed, angered, or lied to, but I have not felt abused. I can certainly see how some may feel that way. I have represented people who I feel have been abused by government. I have taken action on their behalf. I will be taking action in the next day or two on a case here in Utah County.

To your points BasinCruiser, when governments start to slap ankle monitors on people for not signing "promise to quarantine" papers, without due process, I believe that is in fact an abuse of power and I hope those folks get a lawyer and go after their local government. What has happened thus far, at least here in Utah, I would not consider "abuse" and I believe that those making decisions have done the best they can with the available information. Were they right? Well, hindsight is 20/20. That will be determined. I believe what is happening in other parts of the country is in fact an abuse of power and those governments and officials individually should be held accountable both financially and at the ballot box.

I would submit that hard right wingers are in the same camp using the same tactics as the Socialist dictators you refer to. Heck, even Pres. Trump uses "gaslighting" as a tactic and uses it frequently. He is very demeaning. Oh and yes, I voted for him and will do so again. Some on this very sight are very crass, vulgar and demeaning in an attempt to shut down discussion and prove a point. It is a pathetic persuasion tactic, but works at times, particularly on the mentally weak and those who don't take the time to ponder, discuss and work through tough personal, moral, and/or social issues.

Y'know Scott...it's interesting how two people can be looking at the same thing, yet see it so differently. "Little Marco Rubio" for example...that one goes way back but pretty much set the stage. "Low energy Jeb" as well. Those guys laughed at Trump as being irrelevant...and his comeback is more or less "F*ck you, pipsqueak".

It would be nice if he was a eloquent as Reagan was. That guy could insult you without you even knowing it. And it is surprising that Trump can be so unrefined given his business acumen and upbringing. But I don't see him as deliberately viscous...especially given the insults he's had to endure and what he has to deal with. He's having to do business with people that would applaud his death. I would advise him to hire a professional speech/comic writer to respond in a more clever way. Joe Biden certainly isn't much better...he's combative, rude and dumb as a rock.

Indeed, Obama could be downright condescending at times (especially in regards to Trump). And George W....welllll....without knowing him personally, I'll just say that he was "not very articulate." :lol8:

It has been a long time since this country has had an intelligent, well spoken, and respected leader at the helm. I think Trump is a pretty intelligent guy -- there's a reason why he's the president and sitting atop a mountain of money. You don't get there because you're dumb. I just wish he would be less polarizing and inflammatory.

I've gotta tell ya--This has got to be the best summer to see National parks,

Try to envision pulling into the falls at Grand canyon of Yellowstone and you're the only vehicle in the lot.

It's been that way everywhere.

Some places have small crowds but nothing like a normal year.

At one time saw 10 bears in 2 days in Teton and Yellowstone, never done that before.

As mentioned--stayed at the Headwaters/Flagg ranch,

really great area if you don't mind driving dirt roads.

Nice trip over towards Ashton, then up to Bechler ranger station.

Many options.

Headwaters has a campground.

It's right between Teton and Yellowstone.

We have a nice little rig, kinda like blueyes, maybe a hair bigger.

Personally, I think when Trump wins another term, the reaction will be rather muted. Sure, some are going to take to the streets and there will be more of what is becoming the uh...new normal...and among the media they'll react more with disgust rather than shock.

It's pretty clear to see what the deal is...Elect us (Dems) and they'll calm down, elect Trump and it gets worse. But in reality, I haven't heard any liberals that say they've got these people "under control"...in fact, they don't want to talk about it at all. They allude that they "have the answers" without giving us any answers at all. If anybody can point me to "the plan"...I'd love to hear it. There isn't one. Just pure chaos.

The problem with that is that not a single Democrat pundit, politician or academic has condemned the violence and vandalism. Not one...no tweets, official statements, Facebook posts, nothing. Even if they were to win the power they'd have to serve the constituency they've created, which is a rabid animal.

Maybe that's the "answer", huh? Just throw them some bones...vote Dem because Trump sure as hell isn't going to do it.

Doom and Gloom? On the contrary (except perhaps in Doug's case)...I'm personally pretty optimistic that a majority of this country is not going along with the program. Seems like most of those around here are as well.

The Dem party is never coming back. They've turned into the Communist/Socialist Party of the USA. Strange and tragic at the same time...when Trump was elected and they started going off the rails I declared (on this site) that the Democrat Party was in serious need of reformation if it were to stay relevant. They reformed, alright.

rock, c'mon. We see Tucker Carlson's address release, we see city councilmen and mayor's homes targeted, we see fed police hounded at their hotels. Why is it a stretch to say voter rolls won't be used to harass people?

I lived in CA when the anti gay marriage Prop 8 passed in 2008. The left went to the open records of donators and specifically targeted people. A total abuse of law forcing people to reveal donations and an abuse of the sanctity of privacy and elections. There's no limit to what they'll do, and I think we've seen that in spades the last few months.

And I would like to add that I sincerely doubt Americans attitude towards this virus would be any different if we would have had the information a week earlier. But don't worry according to Trump this will just disappear. According to you guys it will after the election unless we put that off.

Too many people didn't think this would ever be a problem for the US. And even a weeks more notice wouldn't have prepared us any better. The preparation for a pandemic should have happened long time ago.

92 years ago people knew what it was like to frequently lose loved ones to infectious disease. Before the advent of antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs and the ability to develop vaccinations. Before the golden age life expectancy was on average 47 years. The majority of that generation is gone. Very few are left.

Our abuse of antibiotics and lack of education for the general public on how this all works is taking us back. This is a virus and you can't treat it with antibiotics. But the attitude around how easy it is to generally treat infections has decreased the respect for viral and bacterial infections.

General attitude is walk into the doctor and demand X to treat whatever and you go on about your life.

Very few people took the news of this virus seriously even when the information was released. Oh we are in America we are above that nonsense.

Preparing the entire nation for a pandemic comes with building trust in the people who are in charge. Any trust on information coming out has almost completely eroded.

You can stock pile as much medicine and ventilators as you can but they do you no good if you can't get people to listen to and go along with the simplest instructions as wear a mask, social distance yadda yadda. Those items you stock piled do you very little good.

The amount of bullshit information spread by so called experts kills me..and how easily people want to believe that bullshit because they just want this to go away blows my mind.

Yes the CCP is devious and in general out to line their own pockets. They have been up to some very nefarious things. So easy to blame this on them to try and make sense of something that is random. And if it makes you feel better or vindicated to blame China that is your prerogative.

This virus was naturally occurring. Just like every other pandemic that has blazed across this globe. Mother Nature can be a real bitch sometimes.

I don't believe the virus was engineered... but I do believe it was intentionally introduced and allowed to spread. The US had won the trade war and brought the Chinese economy to its knees. The Chinese were left with only two alternatives... conceded to US demands or go scorched earth and bring the rest of the world down to its level for an even playing field... guess which direction they went?

This is more then just the Coronavirus, you need to look big picture. If you don't look at this from a military and economic standpoint from a cold war perspective you will never understand.

China is not our friend, their stated national goal is world domination. Our government has been playing everyone gets a trophy for the past 30 years and China has been playing to win, take no prisoners, if you're not cheating you're not trying for the past 30 years. Time to pull your head out of the Sand. China has no desire for peaceful coexistence.

I remember ALL of this stuff regarding the virus...about a week after I got there the first mention of "Chinese Virus in Wuhan" showed up. I thought, "OK, just another one of these things, they'll get a handle on it"...the impeachment thing is what was dominating but as the days went by the virus thing ramped up.

I flew back to the mainland on Feb.22nd. I recall thinking about 2 weeks before that flight that I may not be able to make it back if they started restricting movement. I thought for sure if it hit the states it would start in Hawaii because of so many Asians vacationing there. It didn't, of course. The stinking CCP bypassed the island altogether and went straight for the west coast...NY, too. Sammied us.

I saw all the confusion while I was there...the politicians, doctors, "experts", etc. careening around all over the place. So it's easy for me to see the two faced BS when they try to insist that "this (or that) is what we did back then".

There 'aint nobody to trust. That's just the way it is.

I'll make an exception for military men that kick ass and take names...Patton or Schwarzkopf, guys like that...anyone else? Nah.

Blueeyes, I appreciate and respect the vast majority of your alternative viewpoints on here. But, I’m going to have to call you on this one. I think this is total BS. At what point are we supposed to be trusting ‘the people in charge’? When they tell us that this virus is not spread from person to person? When they tell us one moment not to wear masks because they aren’t very effective and healthy people don’t need to wear one? Or the next moment when the same people are saying we should all be wearing masks, and now are telling us to wear face shields as well? Are we supposed to trust the government leaders who funnel sick patients into rest homes and kill 10s of thousands of people? Or the medical professionals who praise those leaders and say they are doing things right? Are we supposed to trust the people that condemn the approach that Sweden took? Or the ones that praised them and said they should be the model ( same group, just a few months apart). Are we supposed to trust the ones that say people shouldn’t congregate in churches, but refuse to say the same about riots ( er, peaceful protesting)? After POTUS stops travel from China, do we listen to the leaders that condemn him for it and tell us to come on down to Chinatown for a good time, or do we believe them was month later when they criticize him for not doing enough to stop the virus? Which leaders are we supposed to follow, and when?

The Trust has been eroded in these people because they haven’t gotten anything right on this, yet. They have flipped everything several times.

There’sa saying something about the more you learn about history, the more you distrust the government.

It’s crazy how people can look at the same scenario and come to completely different conclusions. The socialists are fawning over this pandemic, drooling saying how it proves how we need to have government ran healthcare. I look at all of the blinders with this pandemic, and the majority of the problems I’ve seen have been political blowups by politicians trying to play doctor, and even more evidence to me that the government should get the hell out of healthcare.

You live on a different planet. So do I....I watched a recent content on Taiwan. Was it real? The street fare and all the people in action. I wanted some of that food lol(its in 4k). Everybody in real time just living THEIR lives. There was probably 2% wearing masks. It was so damning on our state of Stockholm syndrome and all of the fake grins. Economy was buzzing and all of the antics of people who arent cowering in fear of politics. Myself, I like the cancel culture these days and maybe we should all get it over with and suicide together(because thats what we are doing in slo-mo). But...if we do make it back like Taiwan did, all bets are off. Hell fury for whats happened is fine with me...weve been played so bad people should be..well lets not go there.

Thats why to me the nanny state corrupts the meaning of everything. I dont talk about Covid because the main problem is the nanny state...you avoid that and you lose no matter the subject.
And you talk about dark because you dont know the 10% of it. I only had a small interaction with it by going to Hawaii years back, but it was scary then and that was kind of tame.
I dont pay that much attention, but its all bad news. Its beyond bad, I dont know what it is.

So many, but I still think about the couple who got married recently. And what a time that is for someone. And so who shows up, but it was time for $1000 citations for everyone...and they never got to say I do on that event. I was like you could not get anyone to believe that scene in a movie where the cops do that. But now it was defended...like, of course, shame on them. They know you get your virtual wedding and once you realize it its even more happier...so now 2 people in love cant say it to each other because safer at home. I can officially say I know someone personally that has tested positive for COVID.

For the last 2 weeks we have been waiting on results for my brother in a nursing home in Davis County that has a COVID ward. (NY and democratic states are not the only ones that use care centers to take care of COVID patients). Anyway he ran a fever for 4 days and chest x-rays definitely showed pneumonia. But he tested negative for COVID. Thankfully! and his roommate as well. He also responded to antibiotics. So we continue to twiddle our thumbs and wonder if we will ever get to see him alive face to face because they still won't let us in.

A friend I mountain bike with she tested positive but so far zero symptoms. She is a physical therapist so I assume she was exposed at work and tested. I haven't talked to her personally just through another mutual mtb friend that rode with her Saturday.

Still know of 2 deaths from COVID both friends of my mothers that she knows through her church. It has really rocked the church. The last one died at home by herself..police had to break the door down after a friend went to drop off food and she didn't answer the door.

COVID Treatment Update:

This week, the FDA revoked the emergency use authorization (EUA) that allowed for chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate to be used to treat certain hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Based on its ongoing analysis of the EUA and emerging scientific data, the FDA determined that chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are unlikely to be effective in treating COVID-19 for the authorized uses in the EUA. Additionally, in light of ongoing serious cardiac adverse events and other potential serious side effects, the known and potential benefits of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine no longer outweigh the known and potential risks for the authorized use.

^^^So far 8 of my in-laws, two friends, and my across the street neighbors have gotten it. No deaths, no hospitalizations, and most were fairly mild cases except for one that lasted 2 weeks and was pretty severe.

Eventually we'll all get it.

The vast majority of severe sickness and death come from the elder and folks with pre-existing health conditions (look at the demographics when they come out). Most healthy people who get it are asymptomatic or have mild cases, it doesn't preclude young, healthy people from getting really sick like McAdams did. It's just less likely.

Hospital is asking us to stay out of our IMC unit. They will be closing the hallway down so it limits who comes near the COVID19 unit. My hospital is doing good on supplies currently. But sounds like the surge might be here.

School starts in 13 days. Should be interesting.

JUST IN: Utah reports 242 new cases and 2 new COVID-19 deaths. The rolling seven-day average is 354 cases - or 9.6% of those tested. 139 people hospitalized.

This seems like really low numbers. I haven’t been following it, but when do we stop reporting the numbers because it is over? Obviously there are still mountains to climb I guess because they are still cancelling everything. Including a good chunk of college sports due to some new heart condition?

Luckily here in Utah we’ve got High School Football and much of it is streamed live, including 25 games last weekend. So I guess I’ll be watching more of that and BYU Football this year. Along with the SEC, ACC, Big 12 and others.

The mask mandate in Utah only impacts a small fraction of counties. The remainder of the state is mostly mask-free save for those establishments that are mandating for entry.

it was spreading in new york much earlier in february as after-the-fact testing of samples in hospitals revealed. much of the early cases in new york arrived from travel from europe. accurate testing (as well as predictive modeling) was needed to know where it was and where it was spreading across the US. as people travel freely it will spread due to being highly contagious (particularly with superspreaders) before symptoms appear (if they do at all) and also when symptoms are mild and the person doesn't realize. as blunt tools, distancing and masks can help with this tricky aspect of the virus.

my comment about navarro's strong early warning was just an example. the president did partially followed his suggestion on travel from china but only placed limits on travel rather than an outright ban as navarro pushed for. of course the virus was spreading from china to many other countries and would naturally arrive from other locations in due course so it was just a matter of time before it arrived in increasing numbers from elsewhere. but the president also continued to downplay the virus publicly for quite some time.

i can't say what anyone else would have done. i want the executive branch as well as congress and state leadership to take situations of this ilk seriously and work together to find an effective and least damaging approach to addressing the situation given the knowledge at hand (and using most any means to obtain accurate information). to be clear, with the clear threat to the economy and public health that this poses, i would believe any president, including president trump, would take it very seriously.

Who did what/where/why and when was 6 months ago...considering how shitty this has been for so many the "here and now" is really what is most important.

i think understanding what happened is also important to prepare for the future so that we're in a better position for an unknown pandemic (or something related)

i get your cynicism but i disagree. pandemics have occurred historically. the emergence of SARS and MERS raised a serious awareness that a very contagious virus may emerge and lead to a pandemic. much has been learned from the measures other countries have taken to manage the spread of these coronaviruses. it's not an alien invasion.

I think I see our differences... you're a save every life and who gives a shit what it does to the economy and quality of life type of guy.

The virus is not Trumps fault. The spread is not Trumps fault. However on many occasions he made light of the virus, continues to make light of the virus. Several democrats made light of the virus. Media made light of the virus and now have sensationalized the virus. In that respect it has set a tone for people to mistrust one or the other or both sides and the media and deepened a divide that was already there. And has spawned more conspiracies than I have ever seen. That in itself is a most interesting phenomenon.

As I have said before this pandemic has exposed all of America's weaknesses. And it continues to.

I love the time-line you posted. I really do. It will be very helpful this year with school and presenting facts.

Hindsight is 20/20. The way America and Americans have handled this has been less than stellar. This virus has health consequences we don't fully comprehend. It feels like at this point we have been dealing with this for an eternity but it has only been 8 months of really trying to get a grasp. This virus is going no where, it is here to stay just like H1N1. The current state of things probably will continue for a couple years if history repeats itself. The Spanish Flu lasted 2 years.

Personally, I think stefan is pretty badass because he's one of the few that actually has a thick skin...he's stuck around while so many others have bailed. He's like that dude around the campfire that doesn't say much but when he does I'll turn my ear to him...I'm interested in what he has to say. The gut feeling I have is that there's some deep wisdom there...but to me, it's like he walks a careful edge...I'd like to push him over and hear him raise his voice a bit but he's pretty damn solid.

I wouldn't want to get on Oldno's shitlist, that's for sure...but in this case, he truly laid down some heavy meat. The good stuff...undeniable.

Facts and opinions...to me stefan was going on (mostly) about the way things should have happened. Sometimes it may take a few post to realize you're dealing with retrospective wishful thinking.

My sweet mother in law passed away this morning. Her cause of death is Covid. But I want people to understand when they see another Covid death in Utah’s media that this poor woman has been so ill for so long. She had many preexisitng health conditions and has had poor health for many many years. I think it might be helpful for some to know stories behind the statistics.
