video hosting and converting
Longtime photographer just now starting to play with video. Picked up a GoPro for biking and wondering where's the best place to host the videos? Also any decent freeware for doing conversions? Like to be able to take my DSLR video and make DVDs of it as well as down downsampling some of the work for sharing online also.

I just throw all of my videos on YouTube, Vimeo or Facebook - let them do the heavy lifting for you on hosting the large files. YouTube has come a long way on playing HD footage and in my opinion is the best way to go. Some of the "uppety ups" choose Vimeo over YouTube because they say it gives a more prestigious format, but it really doesn't. When your whole purpose is to share your footage, and vimeo doesn't play as well as YouTube when embedded or shared, you'll start leaning towards YouTube.
Are you looking at sharing through a website of yours? Even so, build your website and just embed the YouTube videos.
Editing the videos? I need to just make an official tutorial thread on this one of these days because I'm sure everybody's sick of hearing me push Windows Live Movie Maker, but it really is a great way to go. Unless there is something specific you need from your video production that WLMM cannot do, go ahead and spend money on a program, but I've yet to hear a good reason to look elsewhere
