Hole In the Rock Road closed as of Oct 7, 2010

From Rick, now that the rain has stopped. Please note, I interpret this as the HITR road will be open TO EGYPT - but I would not count on it past there for quite some time.

    Howdy Tom-

Can you put the word out that Hole in the Rock road is CLOSED. Washed out and saturated. Should be open in a few days according to the county road crew. Also remind folks that “driving around” puddles and leaving the road is TOTALLY ILLEGAL. If you can’t get through the swamp and or aren’t willing to repair the road then it is best to turn around.

A few stranded hikers near Chop (somebody you know) had some food dropped out of the plane to hold them over until the river level lowers. Stay tuned.

Glad we got out of there when we did on Wednesday morning while it was pouring rain. The road was in bad shape then....even in a Jeep.

Been stuck there before. Amazing how that road changes after some precipitation.

Anyone know what the condition is now? Say, down to the Egypt road? Down to the 40 mile ridge road?

And what about those two roads in to the Egypt and 40 mile parking areas?

Hoping to get in there in a rent-a-car end of April... ?

Well, I'll (at least partially) answer my own question for anyone else's benefit.

I called the Escalante office. The road has been graded and is in good condition in general. There's a blizzard going on at the moment but when it dries out it should be good, according to the BLM.

(And they know that their "Road Conditions" link is down.)
