I was out hiking and canyoneering yesterday and missed everything downtown. So, now I'm playing catch-up and thankfully KSL posted a 5 1/2 hr long live video of the protest/riot on their FaceBook page. I was able to download a Facebook copy of the footage for archival purposes but I've been shocked by some of the people's comments down there. Surprised? I guess not really...but surprised by the kinds of people saying things!
There was a group of black men guarding the 7-11 downtown from looters saying "you wanna protest...do it! But not like this. Not like this. You are doing a disservice to the us black folks." Next was a hispanic guy with his buddy and says "wassup niggas" to the camera! Another lady took a poop on the cop car (and she was later arrested). Saw lots of graffiti with "F*CK 12" (which means "f*ck the police" but more specifically towards the drug unit). And read LOTS of terrible sayings such as "the only good cop is a dead cop" and so much more.

I heard City Creek got attacked and so I looked it up and nope, it was targeted at one specific store....take a guess....The Apple Store. It was probably 8 people or so.

Although, I am very ,very surprised, that none of the rioters tried to "storm" the salt lake temple, Temple Square, or the LDS administration building! Maybe it was tagged or something, especially since they are along the way to the State Capitol but no reports of that so far.
I also went through the mug-shots of everyone who was arrested and captured a snippet of them online. It's also been fun (and hilarious) reading some of the reddit comments on the Salt Lake City reddit page. All for archival purposes. :popcorn:

A review of all the arrests made by Minneapolis-based police agencies for rioting, unlawful assembly and burglary-related crimes from Friday to Saturday tells a different story.

Here's what the HCSO jail records show. There are 69 cases from Friday to Saturday that were categorized as "received by jail" as of about 11 am this morning. Of those, here's the state breakdowns:

The lawsuit claims the officers handcuffed Ferguson despite having no probable cause to believe he had committed a crime.
The officers took Ferguson's wallet and ID and the second officer ran the ID through the National Crime Information Center, a federal database, but no warrant showed up in the system, the lawsuit said.
Despite this, the second officer "falsely stated that there was a warrant out for Plaintiff's arrest," the lawsuit states. The officer questioned Ferguson about a previous incident involving people who the officer believed were Ferguson's family members, but Ferguson "said he had no information to tell the officers."

Completely agree.

I posted a link above with Conan interviewing Van, who is a black attorney and provides some good context to the arrest, the mentality of black culture regarding officers, etc. Its 30min long but it made me rethink a few my preconceived ideas regarding the events and how I need to be more understanding and less quick to cast blame to anyone.

As millions of people across the country take to the streets and raise their voices in response to the killing of George Floyd and the ongoing problem of unequal justice, many people have reached out asking how we can sustain momentum to bring about real change.
Ultimately, it’s going to be up to a new generation of activists to shape strategies that best fit the times. But I believe there are some basic lessons to draw from past efforts that are worth remembering.
First, the waves of protests across the country represent a genuine and legitimate frustration over a decades-long failure to reform police practices and the broader criminal justice system in the United States. The overwhelming majority of participants have been peaceful, courageous, responsible, and inspiring. They deserve our respect and support, not condemnation – something that police in cities like Camden and Flint have commendably understood.
On the other hand, the small minority of folks who’ve resorted to violence in various forms, whether out of genuine anger or mere opportunism, are putting innocent people at risk, compounding the destruction of neighborhoods that are often already short on services and investment and detracting from the larger cause. I saw an elderly black woman being interviewed today in tears because the only grocery store in her neighborhood had been trashed. If history is any guide, that store may take years to come back. So let’s not excuse violence, or rationalize it, or participate in it. If we want our criminal justice system, and American society at large, to operate on a higher ethical code, then we have to model that code ourselves.
Second, I’ve heard some suggest that the recurrent problem of racial bias in our criminal justice system proves that only protests and direct action can bring about change, and that voting and participation in electoral politics is a waste of time. I couldn’t disagree more. The point of protest is to raise public awareness, to put a spotlight on injustice, and to make the powers that be uncomfortable; in fact, throughout American history, it’s often only been in response to protests and civil disobedience that the political system has even paid attention to marginalized communities. But eventually, aspirations have to be translated into specific laws and institutional practices – and in a democracy, that only happens when we elect government officials who are responsive to our demands.
Moreover, it’s important for us to understand which levels of government have the biggest impact on our criminal justice system and police practices. When we think about politics, a lot of us focus only on the presidency and the federal government. And yes, we should be fighting to make sure that we have a president, a Congress, a U.S. Justice Department, and a federal judiciary that actually recognize the ongoing, corrosive role that racism plays in our society and want to do something about it. But the elected officials who matter most in reforming police departments and the criminal justice system work at the state and local levels.
It’s mayors and county executives that appoint most police chiefs and negotiate collective bargaining agreements with police unions. It’s district attorneys and state’s attorneys that decide whether or not to investigate and ultimately charge those involved in police misconduct. Those are all elected positions. In some places, police review boards with the power to monitor police conduct are elected as well. Unfortunately, voter turnout in these local races is usually pitifully low, especially among young people – which makes no sense given the direct impact these offices have on social justice issues, not to mention the fact that who wins and who loses those seats is often determined by just a few thousand, or even a few hundred, votes.
So the bottom line is this: if we want to bring about real change, then the choice isn’t between protest and politics. We have to do both. We have to mobilize to raise awareness, and we have to organize and cast our ballots to make sure that we elect candidates who will act on reform.
Finally, the more specific we can make demands for criminal justice and police reform, the harder it will be for elected officials to just offer lip service to the cause and then fall back into business as usual once protests have gone away. The content of that reform agenda will be different for various communities. A big city may need one set of reforms; a rural community may need another. Some agencies will require wholesale rehabilitation; others should make minor improvements. Every law enforcement agency should have clear policies, including an independent body that conducts investigations of alleged misconduct. Tailoring reforms for each community will require local activists and organizations to do their research and educate fellow citizens in their community on what strategies work best.
But as a starting point, I’ve included two links below. One leads to a report and toolkit developed by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and based on the work of the Task Force on 21st Century Policing that I formed when I was in the White House. And if you’re interested in taking concrete action, we’ve also created a dedicated site at the Obama Foundation to aggregate and direct you to useful resources and organizations who’ve been fighting the good fight at the local and national levels for years.
I recognize that these past few months have been hard and dispiriting – that the fear, sorrow, uncertainty, and hardship of a pandemic have been compounded by tragic reminders that prejudice and inequality still shape so much of American life. But watching the heightened activism of young people in recent weeks, of every race and every station, makes me hopeful. If, going forward, we can channel our justifiable anger into peaceful, sustained, and effective action, then this moment can be a real turning point in our nation’s long journey to live up to our highest ideals.

I think that many do. Not sure if it's most of them though. I don't think that a majority of white kids think that's true anymore either, though.

One thing that I noticed as I watched things unfold in Salt Lake on Saturday, It was mainly stupid white kids that were causing the damage. When the reporters pulled someone aside to ask some questions, all of the black people they talked to were respectful and said that they were pleading with them to stop screwing around and causing problems. All of the white people they talked to immediately started cussing and blaming and were just cut off right away. For that, I have hope that the black community understands that violence is not the way forward. At least that was my view of things on Saturday in Salt Lake. It's obviously different in other places based on demographics and all that.

That said, I agree that this is still a country of opportunity. The upward mobility offered to everyone here is wonderful if you want it. That doesn't mean that we can't, and shouldn't, do better.

I did a double check on this last night...I don't know what the law is in Utah, but it appears that in most states, if you shoot someone that is on or even approaching your property in a threatening manner, you'll be charged with murder.

Utah law recognizes your right to self defense. Utah law allows you to use force, including deadly force, if you are approached in a threatening manner. Utah law does not require that you retreat and recognizes your right to stand your ground.

Utah also allows what is commonly referred to a castle doctrine, which basically states a man is king of his home (castle) and is allowed to use deadly force to stop anyone from unlawfully entering.

I also agree with this. I've said before that he had a great opportunity when he was the president. Rather than trying to build up the minority community, he tried to tear white people down. All that violence and what did it get them? Not much, it seems.

IMO, it all boils down to culture. I remember back in the 80s...we had stuff like the Cosby Show and The Jeffersons, Family Matters, Benson, Different Strokes...all depicting blacks "assimilating" into white culture, with a lot of peace loving morality weaved into the episodes. Music, too...nice and clean. MC Hammer, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, etc...everybody was nice and friendly and the image was black, but mixed with 80s era New Wave culture.

And then...NWA came out with "Straight Outta Compton" and that changed everything. "Gangsta Rap" they called it. I remember seeing an interview with Ice T when he said that the bullshit imagery of blacks living like white people hit the skids with that album. This is what it was REALLY like and there was no going back...pants hanging down to the knees and shoes with no laces emulated jail fashion...they don't let you have belts or shoelaces when they put you in the clink. The lyrics were violent...glorifying drugs, the degradation of women, assault, etc...

Plenty of white people had been singing about stuff like that for years, but the difference was the with the whites, it was all about partying, getting laid and high. With the gansta stuff...it was serious. They meant it.

It's intimidating. It was then and still is. People crossing the street when they see (especially) young blacks heading their way is more a function of safety, not so much "race hate", I would say. That's how it works for me, at least. Take most of these tattooed, pierced, black hair and clothing goth whites and likely get the same result.

People are always going to recoil away from sketchy looks and behavior...it's too bad the cultural optics have detrimental effects, but most people actively try to avoid trouble. Like that saying that sprang up in the 1960s..."Clean up your act".

I've got a friend that has tattoos on his arm of hot zombie chicks with the tits and ass gnawing on severed limbs...quite prominent, covering his arm. I was driving on a lonely highway in central Colorado with my then girlfriend Diane. She was astonishingly beautiful...you could be 300' away from her but think "Damn, that a good looking gal over there". Anyway, I wasn't speeding or doing anything wrong when we passed a cop on the side of the road. He got behind me and after a full 5 minutes of riding my ass, he pulled me over.

Had me get out of the truck and stand by the side of the road while he eyeballed Diane. It was creepy and weird...I didn't ask why he pulled me over, I just complied because I didn't want to piss him off...he was a strange one. He asked a couple questions..."Where are you going" "Where have you been"...all the while just staring at Diane.

When he finally let us go, Diane was pretty freaked out. She was a bit naive, and although she knew very well what had just happened, she couldn't understand how a police officer could do such a thing. Her perception of the police is that they were all righteous and professional. She was quiet for a long time after that. It shook her up, like she was groped.

I told her "There's no shortage of weirdos in the world, honey. We just ran into one".
