Utah football locks up four-star quarterback Jack Tuttle, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback out of Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, Calif. Tuttle becomes the highest-rated quarterback signing in program history. National powerhouses such as USC, Alabama and LSU vied for the four-star prospect during the recruiting process.

$10 bucks says Mr. Four Stars will sit on the sidelines and watch Huntley for the next two years. It's cute how you think Huntley will stay healthy enough to start for two years. I love The guy, but the way Huntley plays he is only good for about half the games a season.

"Tuttle, an Elite 11 quarterback with big-time offers and hype is simply the most recognized athlete at that position Utah has ever encountered. It would be safe to say the attention paid to Tuttle and his résumé, film, record, offers and general interest is 50 times more than Alex Smith ever got. And Smith was a No. 1 NFL draft pick."

Alex Smith was not heavily recruited out of HS. I believe he only had two D1 offers. Alex wasn't even the starter at Utah until their QB1 (Elliott) went down a couple games into the season.

Which I find funny as Matt Gay was not Utah's starter the first game of the season.... so much for Utah coaches judging new talent.

“It’s really nice to make it official,” said Tuttle, who verbally committed to Utah over a year ago. “I appreciate everything my coaches, my teammates at my current school have done for me as well as my future coaches at Utah.”

Tuttle added that it’s “an honor to be part of this Utah football team” and he’s very excited. His plans are to enroll at the U. in January in order to participate in winter conditioning and then spring ball.

“It was important to do this because I need to understand and thoroughly understand the playbook, progressions, know my teammates and kind of get my feet wet — get up to the college speed and be prepared for anything and anything I can do for the team,” Tuttle said. “So I think it was the right thing to do.”

Tuttle plans to come in and work for the starting job at Utah.

“My intention is to come in and compete my butt off and do whatever I can for this football team right now — whatever that may be,” said Tuttle, who had kind things to say about current Utah starter Tyler Huntley. “He’s a great guy, a great player. He did a good job this season.”

Tuttle is looking forward to working with offensive coordinator Troy Taylor, who is completing his first season with the Utes.

“Troy Taylor is a great football mind and great coach. I have so much respect for him and what he’s doing and what he plans to do at Utah,” Tuttle said. “I can’t wait to get working with him and play for him.”

Monson: By bringing back Gary Andersen, did Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham just hire his successor?

“Whittingham’s name has appeared in recent reports regarding open NFL head coaching jobs, in particular the vacancy with the New York Giants. ESPN and other news outlets have listed Whittingham among the potential candidates. Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel has him ranked fourth on a list of 10 college coaches, behind only David Shaw, Jim Harbaugh and Brian Kelly, who could be in line for a jump to the NFL.”

There's some modest buzz around the team.

Respected magazine Athlon Sports & Life, in January, had Utah picked second in the South Division, saying the Utes “could push USC for the South Division crown.” San Jose Mercury News writer Jon Wilner picked the Utes third in the South but added "a division title wouldn’t be a complete surprise."

Will be interesting to see the game plan here since Coach Whit does NOT favor the "RB by committee" option. Traditionally there's always been one clear RB to start, and anybody else is just a back up for when the starter goes down with the inevitable mid-season injury.

They're both great RBs. And I think Shyne's injury last season was what gave Moss the opportunity to shine. Will be interesting to see who emerges when they're both healthy.

We've heard all of this before....and then Utah lays a major egg in the latter half of the season and loses the South. It's happened at least twice now. For some reason Utah can just never keep it together late in the season. Injuries, maybe? Fatigue?

Iceaxe
06-25-2018, 09:23 AM
Is there even one school in the country predicting they will have a shitty season at the moment?

I don't think there is a school anywhere saying they don't have a shot at the championship this year.... that is what summer is all about.

rockgremlin
06-25-2018, 09:58 AM
...although I must say that it is definitely a boon to have all of the most difficult games at home and in the first half of the season (Arizona and USC). And speaking of USC....Darnold is gone, and their other starting positions at WR and RB are also all gone to the NFL. So USC's marquee talent is mostly all gone, and they're starting from scratch. Hell, their starting QB is just some fresh faced kid who graduated high school one year early. So, basically USC's starting QB is a high school kid with no previous college experience.

AND -- it is also a big PLUS to have coach Anderson back on the sidelines for the Utes.

I agree that every college is big on their team right now, but Utah looks especially good heading into Fall this year.

Yeah, USC is the juggernaut that will always be a hill to climb for Utah in the south.

That said, Utah has them at home and have won the last two at Rice-Eccles in the head-to-head matchup.

The last couple seasons USC has gotten stronger as the season progresses and Utah has really struggled to close out conference play.

It's always good to get a rookie QB early in the season.

And the reason Utah struggles in November is a lack of depth. When our starter goes down there is a big drop to our number 2, not so with some of the other PAC teams. The good news is this problem should get better the longer we're a power 5.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/college-football-starting-quarterback-rankings-2018

- Utah came in at 31 out of 130 with Tyler Huntley (not bad)

- Utah State came in at 83 out of 130 with Jordan Love

&

- BYU came in at 90 out of 130 with Tanner Mangum

For context, they also ranked Arizona's Khalil Tate at #4 (which is BS), Washington's Jake Browning at #7, and Oregon's Justin Herbert at #8.

Does Utah finally have the depth to close out November? Can Tyler Huntley stay healthy? Does the offense begin to click and at least become a mediocre power 5 offense?

You will not be able to bet this game at a sports book as it will be "off the board" which is what they do with all extremely lopsided predictions.

There are too many unknowns for a sports book to take the action, like when does Utah start playing their 3rd string.

On paper, Huntley looked slightly improved. On the field, he looked like the same old Huntley.

That interception he threw was to a Weber player standing all alone without a Ute player anywhere for miles around. A baffling interception. Had everyone questioning if he's color blind. He narrowly missed throwing two additional interceptions. And this is against Weber State's secondary. Geez what happens when they play someone who's really good...like Washington in two weeks?

All the hype claimed Huntley was vastly improved in every aspect, but I'm afraid that's all it is...just hype.

Huntley was hit as he was throwing on the INT, how much that effected the pass I don't know.

Some good and some bad from that game. We'll see if they cleaned up the problems next week. It's sometimes hard to judge against such a weak opponent.

Hard to take much from the game, considering the opponent. D looked good, but the matchup on the line was just unfair. I am pretty sure I was as big as those Weber State players. Huntley looked a little rusty, but it was also a pretty vanilla game plan. Next game should look about the same I'd guess, with the real season starting in 2 weeks. Washington didn't exactly look like world beaters yesterday against Auburn, but they will probably clean up a lot in the next 2 weeks. Should be a pretty good season, I would bet we are in the 8-9 win range.

Utah fans need to lose the Pac-12 stickers on their vehicles and stop wearing gear with it. I get it for the first couple years, but now it’s just an embarrassment. No other team in the conference has fans that put Pac-12 logos everywhere. Makes Utah fans look like a bunch of clowns.

Fans pay the money and can do whatever makes them happy in my humble opinion. I hear the same type argument about grown men running around in a teams football jersey. Why are grown men wearing a jersey when they don't play on the team? It's no skin off your ass if fans put a sticker on their car or wear a jersey, so why let it bother you?

Just for the record... When you bought you ticket, how much you paid, or what team you cheer for doesn't make you a better or worse fan. Fans come in all shapes, colors and sizes and they all love their team just as much as you love yours.

If you really want something to worry about it should probably be the decline in the fan base of football as a whole. If things don't change in another 30 years it will no longer matter.

Highly recruited freshman QB Tuttle gets bumped into the #3 spot after Shelley's impressive showing in the 4th quarter. I was quite impressed with Shelley's performance -- he came out and dropped a 40 yard bomb, and also had a 40 yard run. Granted, it was against a gassed Weber State in garbage time, but still I liked what I saw.

I wonder if Tuttle will get impatient and bail on Utah after riding the bench for probably most if not all of his freshman season?

I think Tuttle planned to ride the bench for 2 years (and play for 2 or 3 depending on red shirt) when he signed up as Huntley is only a JR. Or perhaps he planned to enter the game when the inevitable happens and Huntley gets hurt, But having Shelley in the mix is a whole new can of worms for Tuttle as Shelley is a red shirt freshmen. If Shelley is THE GUY that leaves Tuttle 5 years to play 1, not what a top recruit wants to see.

Back in the day the idea was you would enter a program and be a backup for 2 years and then be the guy for 2 years, but that train of though has disappeared in the last few years.

Anyhoo... it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. But it's nice to have a stable full of talent at QB for a change, at least for the time being.

Predictions for tomorrow's game:

Moss and Covey will go off for close to 300 yards of offense in a lopsided road win.

NIL Huskies 17

Although the Utes are a heavy favorite (an 11 point favorite in Vegas), someone over at Athlon sports had the audacity to boldly defy the odds.

It's not looking good.

Washington has an unstoppable one-two punch in QB Jake Browning and RB Miles Gaskin. Utah has been unable to stop (or even slow down) either of those two players in the last 3 years. You might recall last season when Gaskin rolled over Utah's vaunted defense for 166 yards + 3 touchdowns.

Top this off with the following not-so-great news:

1. Moss is injured (he was limping around at the end of last week's game).

2. Coach Peterson

3. Utah has committed 6 turnovers in only two games against shitty teams.

4. Huntley is not as new and improved as the hype claims.

5. Washington has won 10 out of 11 of their meetings all time, so you know that is going to be a big mental block for Utah.

6. Coach Peterson

7. Utah has no offensive line. In last week's contest against a shitty MAC team, the Utes allowed 14 tackles for loss, and Huntley was sacked 6 times. Again -- that was from a shitty MAC team -- what happens when they play someone really, really good....like Washington?

8. Moss only managed 66 yards on the ground. He should have raped NIU, but instead he turned in a mediocre performance and got injured in the process.

9. Utah's special teams is on life support. Between botched punts, and muffed FGs, they are not the usually stellar special teams we're used to seeing.

10. Matt Gay is 1 - 4 on field goals....against crappy teams. WTH happened to him? He break up with his girlfriend or something?

11. Coach Peterson

In short, the Utes are about to get their rectums resized at least 10".

<sigh>

In yesterday's press conference, Kyle Whittingham announced that he's going to ensure that Utah's offense is mostly one-dimensional on Saturday against Washington:

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham noted that Moss will have a greater role after getting 16 carries in each of this season’s games. The junior rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown in the 41-10 win over Weber State. He followed it up with 66 yards and a score in the 17-6 triumph at Northern Illinois.

“We just need to feature him a little bit more. He is a tremendous back,” Whittingham said. “He came away with 16 carries against NIU and that's not a ton shy of what he needs because you don't want to overwork the guy. But he’s a weapon that we need to utilize a little bit more. That is on us as coaches."
https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900031383/utah-footballzack-moss-says-hell-definitely-play-saturday-vs-washington.html

No, Kyle...you need to open the playbook and run some something different and unpredictable...for once. Moss run left, Moss run right, Moss up the middle (maybe) is old and tired and it's easy for just about any team to figure out and prepare for what to do to stop Utah. Here's a handy dandy formula that just about every single team that plays Utah does when preparing to play the Utes:

Stop Moss = Stop Utah

We don't need more Moss. We need more of the rest of the team. Mix in some Mariner and Covey...or something. The Utes have such a talented squad, it just baffles me why the coaches don't utilize them more effectively.

Exactly.

Any rational person can see that that strategy works sometimes, but not all the time. But if you ask Whittingham what to do when you've spent 3 quarters running your RB into a brick wall on 3 and out plays all game, he'll undoubtedly assure you that the remedy is to keep running the ball until the end of the game or the RB's death -- whichever comes first.

Like, the solution to shitty offensive plays is to continue running more shitty offensive plays. I can't figure it out.

Well, it's official: Utah sucks.

We can't even run an intercepted pass in for a free touchdown. Ugh what an awful, horrific, ugly game. It confirmed all of my suspicions. Washington laid bare all of Utah's flaws and made the Utes look mediocre in almost every aspect.

What happened to all of that preseason talk about how much more improved Huntley is? What happened to all of that talk about how improved the WR corps is? And how Moss was going to run riot?

Turns out that's all it was: just talk. A lot of hot air that went out the window the second a superior team walked onto the field to challenge them.

I saw a pathetically pedestrian team out there tonight. No leadership at QB. Terrible play calling, and on top of it all just glaring errors. Turnovers. Fumbles. Mistakes. Miscues. It was so bad that not even the defense could bail them out tonight.

If Kyle doesn't change out Huntley for somebody else he's a damn fool. Everybody can see how terrible he is. Why continue to ride out the race on a lame horse? It'll never work out.

Troubling Trend: Utah has a Growing Problem Closing Out Games
By Josh Furlong, KSL.com | Posted - Oct 1st, 2018 @ 10:24am

SALT LAKE CITY --- The sky is falling.

At least that’s the public’s view of the University of Utah football program that is seemingly in shambles. While there are valid reasons for fans, players and coaches to be frustrated by the early-season conference game results, the season’s outcome hasn’t quite doomed the future of the program … yet. But there are some concerning trends that don’t favor Utah moving forward in a daunting conference schedule ahead.

Coming into the season, Utah was viewed as a viable contender for the South division after returning several starters and a supposedly improved offense led by quarterback Tyler Huntley and running back Zack Moss. Adding to that preseason hype was a stellar defense that was expected to be one of Utah’s best all time. Utah may not have been picked to win the South in the preseason media poll, but many saw a scenario where Utah finally claimed the coveted South division title and made its first appearance in the Pac-12 Championship game (and just to note, that scenario is still very much in play for Utah, despite a 2-2, 0-2 record with losses to both Washington schools).

It's not that Utah is necessarily outmatched or lacks the talent and depth necessary to compete on the gridiron this season, or that the coaching staff is inexperienced and lacks the know-how, it's that there's no consistency in two losses where Utah seemingly could have and should have won, or at least given themselves a fighting chance. Most recently, Utah limited Washington State to only 21 points for much of Saturday’s road game and held a 4-point lead going into the fourth quarter. But a decision to go away from what worked in the first half — a strong, diverse run game — and blown coverage on defense late in the game to allow an 89-yard touchdown pass doomed Utah’s momentum. Several tries later, where Utah had favorable field position, Utah played undisciplined and allowed multiple penalties to negate viable first-down opportunities and a punt return touchdown to give the Cougars the homecoming win.

For Utah, unfortunately, it's a familiar situation and an area where the program has been most consistent: keep the game close, but find a way to lose it at the end. A penalty-laden drive against Washington State, a stalled offense against Washington, an inability to score inside the 5-yard line on multiple attempts against Colorado in 2017, and a missed opportunity to a wide-open Darren Carrington in the end zone against USC in 2017 are just a few of the many painful reminders of could-be wins for the Utes. In total, Utah has a 3-8 record (27.3 percent) in conference play in the last two seasons. Tack on a better 2016 season, where Utah finished with a 5-4 conference record, and Utah slightly improves to 8-12 (40.0 percent). But in games decided by one possession, Utah holds a poor 1-5 record (16.7 percent) since 2017 and a 4-9 record (30.8 percent) since 2016. In total, Utah holds a 15-19 record (44.1 percent) in conference play in one-possession games since joining the Pac-12 in 2011.

Utah is rarely blown out in a conference game, with most of their games (53.8 percent) coming down to one possession. But Utah has never been a strong closing team, so it’s difficult to project anything different moving forward for the Utes should trends hold up. In close games, Utah would be better off flipping a coin rather than competing on the field for the win. The situation doesn’t get any better, though, in Utah’s chances of winning by more than one score. In fact, Utah is less likely to win (43.3 percent) in games where they outscore their opponent nine or more points. Utah has only won 13 out of 65 conference games since 2011 when outscoring their opponent by nine points or more. That’s less than two wins (1.86) per season.

The reality is Utah will be forced into several one-possession games this season moving forward unless they become a high-powered offense. And since there are no indications of that happening anytime soon, Utah has to find a way to be more disciplined late in games and find a way to hold onto a late lead or conjure up a late game-winning charge, similar to Utah’s 2016 win over USC when Troy Williams connected with Tim Patrick for a game-winning touchdown pass in the front corner of the end zone.

They got it done with a quality win. Undefeated (4-0) at Stanford stadium and they’ve got their number. Broke their 11 game winning streak at home too. That was a smash mouth game and fun to watch.

Now on to Arizona.

rockgremlin

I think this was the version of Utah that the preseason press was allowed to see and later reported on.

It was a badly needed win for Utah, and if they can take the momentum from this game and roll it into the remainder of the season they'll go far.

Although the Utes still have tough home games remaining against USC and Oregon, I think the toughest game remaining on the schedule will be when they travel to Colorado. The Buffs are looking really good this year, and that game might decide who wins the South.

Iceaxe

The Buffalos are the class of the South at the moment. They have a QB that refuses to lose, but he is one hit away from turning his team into an also ran.

Well, the Utes are heavily favored to win this game. So naturally that means the Utes will find a way to choke in the final 2 minutes and lose on some fluke play.

That's my unofficial prediction.

My official prediction has Utah winning a heavily lopsided contest: Utah 38 Wildkitties 20

rockgremlin

With last week's mauling of Stanford, Utah receives about a dozen votes, but not enough to crack the top 25. Stanford dropped out completely in the AP poll, and dropped to #24 in the Coach's Poll.

Curiously, Utah State is receiving just as many votes as the Utes, and BYU is now nowhere to be seen.

Took just over two months for Tuttle to decide to pack his bags.

Thing is...if he's really all that great, howcome Shelley beat him for the backup spot? Either he sucks or he's just way overrated. Maybe both.

How about maybe Jason Shelley is really that good and was just underrated and over looked? Back when Utah was a mid major the one thing they were good at was finding the diamond in the rough and polishing him up.

I haven't seen much of Shelley but that 40 yard bomb he threw in the Weber game was sure a pretty ball, it also showed me Shelley is a gunslinger and doesn't play scared as most backups would have taken the safe check down pass as long bombs are always risky.

YMMV

USC's QB was at his high school's senior prom just this year, so I don't think he can stand up to the pressure of leading his team to a critical victory in the hostile territory of RES. This should be a cake walk for the Utes although we've all seen games like this where Utah was a heavy favorite and then stepped on their dicks en route to an embarrassing loss. Climb-Utah.com

The coaches poll is so lame. Please explain how 5-2 Stanford is ahead of 5-2 Utah after Utah thumped em? Oh well, at least AP got it right. Saturday's game was a blast and RES was louder than it has been in a while. When Utah is playing well the fans create a damn hostile crowd. The defense has really come together and is in top form. Just need the offense to keep it up and not always put the game on the D. I haven't watched much USC this year, but they looked soft. USC is a perfect example for how important a good coach is in college football. If you look at USC's recruiting classes over the past 10 years they should never be out of the top 25. I'd say Helton will get the boot at year end.

As long as Utah doesn't screw it up over the next 2 weeks that Oregon game could be a good one. Still no wiggle room if we want to finally win the south since USC has a very soft PAC schedule from here on out.

It's because of those quality wins against UC Davis and San Diego State. Oh yeah and because they capitalized on Oregon's utterly atrocious OT decision making in Eugene a few weeks ago.

Anyone watching the BYU game and their new star QB, Zack Wilson? Keep in mind his first choice of schools was Utah.

Part of signing Tuttle was Utah would not recruit another QB. Utah pulled their offer to Wilson in order to get Tuttle to sign, so far that doesn't look like such a great deal as Tuttle bailed. Wilson looked pretty good in only his second start, but BYU is still a crappy team. The QB and offense coordinator are not the problem.

Other then being butt hurt he was not QB2 I never understood why Tuttle didn't finish out the season with Utah as it was almost a guarantee that Huntley would get hurt at some point in the season. If nothing else Tuttle could have used it to learn.

Drew Lisk (redshirt sophomore) is now QB2. you might see Covey get some training as an emergency QB, but for better or worse Utah's future is now in Shelley's hands.

I'm guessing Utah will put together some type of 10 play Wildcat package for Covey. This would given them a good option if Shelley had to come out for a play or two for something like helmet getting knocked off.

FWIW - Lisk was a walk on and was awarded a scholarship after 2018 spring ball when he led the white team to a win.

Always remember Alex Smith was QB2 behind Brett Elliott. Elliott was the starter in 2002 and was the starter for the first two games of 2003 until breaking his wrist. If Elliott had not of been injured there would be no first round NFL pick Alex Smith.

Can lightening strike twice? Shelley must have a descent game considering he beat out highly rated Tuttle for QB2.

If Shelley finishes out the season undefeated with a Rose Bowl win will injury prone Huntley ever see the field again?

It'd be nice if that is a question we are faced with, but I am doubting we make it to the PAC Championship let alone the Rose bowl. I have this bad feeling that both Utah and byu will 6-5 going into the last game of the season.
