It'd be nice if that is a question we are faced with, but I am doubting we make it to the PAC Championship let alone the Rose bowl. I have this bad feeling that both Utah and byu will 6-5 going into the last game of the season.I'm kinda here myself. Hoping it won't happen.

Yeah I don't know how they're going to diffuse Justin Herbert this Saturday, and they're not going to beat a solid Colorado team in Boulder.

And it's November.

I gotta be realistic and agree that Utah will be 6 - 5 heading into the Holy War.

And play again in the Vegas bowl? LOL

Or play Utah State in a bowl and get smoked? LOL

How about dragging him to altitude and playing at home. RES is always a difficult place to play. Sea level teams have always hated to play in SLC.

In the NBA the Utah and Denver back to back is known as the Altitude Special and teams just hate it.

Who you got this week?

I really fretted over this one.

If this was being played in October I would take Utah no question. But it's November, and Utah has a nasty habit of losing in sprees late in the season. I think last week's demoralizing and embarrassing loss in Tempe knocked them down a few pegs as well. As I was researching this showdown, the following points became apparent:

- Utah and Washington have a very similar defense -- in fact, their defenses are ranked side by side in yards against (Washington at 16th with 313.5 yards against, and Utah at 17th with 316.3 yards against). Oregon beat Washington by 3 points this season.

- Last year Oregon smoked Utah by a score of 41 - 20, led by backup quarterback Braxton Burmeister, who threw 47 yards, one TD and no interceptions. Justin Herbert was out with...get this....a broken collarbone.

- Oregon dominated Utah with their run game, led by Royce Freeman, who had 139 yards, and Tony Brooks-James, who had 105 yards and a TD. Royce Freeman now plays for the Denver Broncos, but Tony Brooks-James is still one of their leading running backs. Once again, our vaunted run defense was pushed aside by Oregon's superior O-line.

- The Ducks have probably changed a few things since last season they had a different coach (Willie Taggart).

- The Utes just couldn't get the offense rolling. Moss had just 53 yards rushing, although they did get 130 receiving yards out of Darren Carrington. Huntley threw for 293 yds, 2 TDs and no interceptions. Carrington had a key fumble that Oregon ran back for a TD.

- All of this is to say that Oregon has roughly the same cast as last year when they destroyed Utah by 20 points -- only this year they have Justin Herbert at the helm instead of a backup freshman.

- But on the other hand, Oregon sucks on the road lately, losing in Arizona by 29 points, and to Washington State by 14 points.

-Oregon has some key defensive injuries, and one of their best lineman Jake Hansen will miss half of the game due to suspension.

- Shelley is untested, and this is a key game. If he can deal with the pressure and deliver the Utes might have a chance. But this is uncharted territory, really. We haven't really seen what Shelley is capable of.

I really want to call the upset here, taking Oregon over a regrouping Utah squad. But I think (hope) Utah comes up with a much needed win here. If they lose this one their South Division title hopes are crushed. They have to know this.

Jason Shelley looked really good considering it was his first D1 start and it was against a quality team. I can see why Tuttle bailed. Now let's see how he does next week away from the friendly confines of RES.

Utah really needs to work on their red zone package. That was disgraceful.

Shyne doesn’t have the power and explosiveness that Moss did in the hole to punished and steamroll people. Hopefully he can get this to some degree. They left 12-16 points in red zone alone...inside the 10!

Iceaxe
11-11-2018, 09:58 AM
Four drives inside the 5 and they couldn't punch it in. Four field goals for 12 points instead of 28. This game would have been a beat down if they had of score TD's on half of those. Oregon doesn't even have a great defense.... Pathetic...

And I'm 100% certain they will jack up the price of season tickets to help pay for it. :angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:

Oh no doubt they will raise prices. They have just about raised them every year since 08. But I still pay less than $800 total for 3 seats, which isn't bad. I'm just lucky that in the North End Zone, I don't have to make a Crimson Club donation along with my ticket cost. I have a vendor that hooks me up 1 game a year with 50 yard line seats on the 8th row, and when I do the math for tickets there, it is pretty damn steep. The ironic thing is that I don't really like watching the game from there. It is too filled with 80 year olds who get annoyed if you stand and who rarely give much more than a golf clap. Easily the most quiet and subdued part of the stadium. Give me lunatics in the North End Zone over the geriatrics ward.

5,000 seats huh? lol by my math that is $16,000/seat. At $100/seat, you only need 26 years to break even. :roflol:.

Probably what is more needed than seats is a better locker room/field entrance. Recruits dig that stuff, and the inflatable tunnel they use now is pretty cheesy.

I wonder if they're gonna also add more restrooms along with the added seating? Already it requires 10 minutes + an iron prostate just to take a leak during halftime.

^^^I gotta go with Ice on this one.

Utah has a very nasty habit of stepping on their dicks right at the most crucial moment -- remember when back in 2016 all the Utes had to do was beat Oregon to clinch the South Division? Utah was ranked #11 in the nation, and Oregon was 3-7 on the year and hadn't won a road game all season. While I was walking into the stadium that day I recall asking a perfect stranger how many points the Utes were going to win by....and then they lost.

Utah is riding high from the energy of defeating Oregon with the second string. And Colorado is hungry for a win since they've lost 5 straight. The time is ripe for a classic Utah meltdown.

Shelley looks really good and he has a much better arm than Huntley. Whatever happens Utah's future looks bright at QB.

I can't think of a more anticlimactic way to end the regular season then what is essentially a preseason game against BYU.

I wish the powers that be... old white Mormon guys serving in the Utah State legislature... Would stop trying to shove the old Utah vs BYU rivalry down our throats. It was a great rivalry back in the day, but time has marched on.

Never weighed in about the QB situation. If Shelley turns out to be a rock star then what? If I were Huntley I'd be sweating right now because it's entirely possible that he's played his last game in a Utes jersey. Utah likes to put the best man forward, and if he thinks he's immune he should check out what happened to Troy Williams. Wouldn't that be poetic justice?

I think Moss should be just fine as he's probably headed to the NFL either way.

Sadly it is not really helping with secondary ticket market. I'm getting old and cranky and don't want to go watch an 8:00 kickoff game in late November. I probably won't get home until past midnight for hells sake! I used to easily get close to $200 per ticket for byu games, and now it looks like I will be in the $90-$100 range. Lame. But if you guys that lost faith want to redeem your fandom feel free to let me know and you can buy 3 tickets in the north end zone, including the aisle seat. :naughty:

I think that has to do from when Utah was a mid major. Back than to get a top athlete they often had to take a kid with problems and help him fix his life. The 4 and 5 star straight A student's seldom head to a mid major.

Well, the first half was really quiet. All of the Ute fans in the crowd were sitting there shaking their heads. The folks behind me were routinely shouting "F***in' DO something, Utah!! F***in' pull your head outta yer ass!" I commented in the second quarter "Wouldn't it be funny if we took a donut into halftime?" And then we took a donut into halftime. The concourse was eerily quiet as folks lined up to buy hot cocoa or a hot dog. All of the BYU fans were on cloud 9, walking around with great big smiles from ear to ear. Some folks gathered up their stuff and left at halftime, disgusted and disappointed.

Even more folks filed out the stadium when the Cougars scored that touchdown in the 3rd quarter. A 27 - 7 deficit is pretty daunting, especially considering how awful the Utes were playing all game. It seemed like a trap game - Utah was focused on Washington next week, and BYU was playing in their version of the Super Bowl.

And then Utah finally woke up.

The 4th quarter was fun. It's been a LONG time since I've seen the stands that energized. Almost the entire 4th quarter the Ute fans were on their feet, high fiving complete strangers. I turned to the F-Bomb droppers behind me and remarked "Remember that time BYU took a 20-0 lead into halftime and Utah stormed back to beat them by 8 points?" :lol8:

They let the fans onto the field to mingle with the players as they launched the post-game fireworks. So we went down and got a few snaps. I was surprised how short Marquis Blair is. Shelley and Hansen were untouchable since the mob surrounding them was so thick. They're probably still up there signing autographs. It's neat to see the players get so much positive attention. They seemed to be basking in it.

Marquis Blair getting some shut eye

Heeeeeee's baaaaaaaack!!! Huntley to return in time to play in this year's bowl game....

...which I think would be a mistake. I think Shelley has shown that he can air out the ball (particularly the deep ball) more accurately and consistently than Huntley. Plus Shelley is great on his feet too -- did you see how many tackles he dodged to get that final TD against BYU? Plus Shelley is fresh. Huntley is all rusty and broken. Just heal up and return next year 100%. We don't need a Half-Huntley representing the Utes at whatever bowl game we play at the end of the season.

A true freshman backup QB at the helm with very limited experience and a backup running back, then losing Covey.

On the other side you’ve got a senior NFL caliber running back who broke all the records at Washington and a senior QB who will get NFL looks. Combined they’ve broken all kinds of records at UW and won lots of games.

The difference was a fluke bounced ball, which could have happened to either team. Utah had chances to win and made more mistakes, but damn they only lost on a fluke play. The future is bright.

I have no bitch about last nights game. Washington has been the better team all year and Utah did exactly what an overpowered team hopes to do. They kept the game close and hoped to win it in the 4th quarter. Washington won on a fluke play that could just as easily have gone for 6 the other way.

As for the PI on the last play I'll say what I always told my teams back when I coached football. If you don't like the call then don't leave the game up to the refs.

Why was the game lost before that? I keep reading this, but I disagree. If they throw a flag it puts Utah on the 25, 1st and 10 with about 40 seconds left. It's not like they were down 2 scores or something. I'm not saying we would have necessarily scored, but they were moving the ball a bit downfield and I have seen worse offenses score in that place. If they would have scored I would hope they went for 2. I'd say at least a 10% chance to get the TD and the conversion. Not a slam dunk by any chance but not over over imo.

9-4 record with a New Years Eve Bowl in San Diego against a ranked P5 school? Maybe not a perfect season, but there aren't many schools out there who wouldn't trade places with the Utes. Overall, a good season.

9-4 record with a New Years Eve Bowl in San Diego against a ranked P5 school? Maybe not a perfect season, but there aren't many schools out there who wouldn't trade places with the Utes. Overall, a good season.

I'd agree with the 10% chance if utah gets the call.

The Holiday Bowl is certainly a top 10 bowl and is where a top 20 team belongs. It's one of the older bowls and has a descent payout.

FWIW - Whittingham played in the Holiday bowl 4 straight years as a player and was named MVP one year.

Utah football: If cleared, Huntley says he'll start in the Holiday Bowl

Shelley is a serviceable QB, and one day he might be a good QB1 as he has a great arm, but where things are today Huntley is the better QB.

Well, here we go again. The University-of-Utah-football-coaching-position revolving door has been spun anew. And now Troy Taylor's offensive scheme that the entire program has been earnestly striving to learn will be thrown into chaos again by another OC and a new offensive scheme.

But really though? Sacramento State? WTF? Why would anybody make that switch? It's like going from coaching in the NLF to coaching High School. It couldn't be the money, could it? I imagine the UofU is paying him pretty well. :ne_nau:

This sucks... just when Utah is getting something that looks like an actual offense.

And FYI Troy Taylor makes $525,000 a year (same as Morgan Sculley and Jim Harding) and places 117 on the national assistant coach pay scale. Taylor can also make an additional $87,500 a year in bonuses.

Interesting chart if you want to know what assistant coaches make:

Sounds like he took a major pay cut to go back home.

I can't fault the guy, but why can't the Utes ever have some semblance of stability instead of constantly being the training grounds for other programs?

All successful programs suffer from the same thing. It's all about the top dog. The problem with Utah is Whitt sucks at offense.

This is pretty accurate. I think Ute fans sometimes forget how good we have it coaching wise. We have been punching above our weight class for a decade thanks to Whit. When you look at the lack of local talent, limited national exposure, new into P5 conference, limited football history, cold weather, and a city that has very few African Americans it is amazing we have been competitive as we have been. Without Whit we are probably as bad as byu.

100% Agree....

Folks can bitch about Whitt, but Utah is special and it takes someone who wants to be here.

BYU has never been the same without Edwards. And Edwards like Whitt had many opportunities to move on to bigger and better things but they liked living in Utah and coaching at their respective schools. I'm old enough to remember the years before McBride when Utah was lucky to break .500 for the year... kind of like BYU these days.

Utah is lucky to have Whitt....

Utah averaged 28.7 points per game in 2018 and averaged 396.0 yards per game in a balanced attack which featured 186.8 yards rushing and 209.2 yards passing per game. His offense featured a pair of quarterbacks during the year who combined to completed 61.9 percent of their passes with 15 touchdowns. Seventeen players caught a pass with eight hauling in at least 10. Running back Zack Moss sparked the ground game with 1,096 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

During his first season with the Utes (2017), his offense featured a second-team all-Pac-12 receiver (Darren Carrington II) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Moss). Taylor's offense spread the ball around with 16 players catching passes and 11 players rushing from scrimmage. That season, Utah amassed 413.4 total yards per game and posted a 30-14 win over West Virginia in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

"I am thrilled to be the new head football coach at Sacramento State," Taylor said. "My family and I are excited to move back home and take on the challenge of building the Hornet Football program into something the city can be very proud. I want to thank President Nelsen, Mark Orr and the rest of the search committee for giving me this opportunity."

In case ya'll have been losing sleep at night wondering about where Jack Tuttle ended up:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25559464/qb-jack-tuttle-transfers-utah-utes-indiana-hoosiers

Evidently upset that he didn't get to be the starter at Utah, Tuttle decided to head to Indiana and try to compete for the starting position there. It's almost the same QB situation as Utah -- they have two very talented quarterbacks already in Michael Penix Jr and Peyton Ramsey.

Peyton Ramsay tossed almost 3000 yards and 19 TDs, and rushed for another 5 TDs. Pretty decent numbers.

Michael Penix Jr is a dual threat QB out of Florida, and was highly recruited -- although he sat out the 2018 season with an injury. So for Tuttle it seems like a case of "out of the frying pan, into the.....frying pan." :lol8:

Tuttle's transfer to IU really doesn't make much sense. But a couple things about Tuttle... I understand he was a great teammate at Utah and did everything that was asked of him. I also understand it's his father pulling the strings and pushing the buttons with regards to his football career. Sounds like a little league parent gone wild.

Anyhoo... I wish him luck, transfers are just part of the game. Utah has benefited greatly from a couple recent transfers. You win some and you lose some.

Indeed it is my son, especially after that embarrassing performance. I believe every Utah fan shares those same sentiments.

I'm trying to console myself with the fact that Utah was playing without four very important starters. And speaking of which...where the hell was Hansen? I don't think he would've missed out on playing in this game for anything. Must have been something really major to make him not play his last collegiate game. :ne_nau:

I'm guessing Hansen skipped to get ready for the NFL combine, which is what a lot of top players do who are not playing for a National Championship. Why risk millions of dollars to try and win a game that few really care about. Playing in the Holiday Bowl is a no win for someone like Hansen as they can't increase their NFL value, but they certainly can decrease it.

YMMV
