I need to stop washing my bike. Every time I do it rains!
The trails are a little wet up top, but it's just on the surface. The lower stuff isn't a bad and my bike didn't get much mud on it. If the rain stays away and the sun comes out then everything should be much better by the afternoon.

I was able to get in a short, quick ride yesterday afternoon at Lambert Park to test out the new 1x11 drivetrain. I ran across this big feller on the Zag Trail. This guy was really chunky for a Great Basin Rattler. Must be well fed!
That feller is huge!

Are there any new trails open connecting the north and south trails? When is the construction supposed to be finished? I heard May...
Iceaxe

Construction is supposed to be finished mid June.
You can cross north to south at the Peak View TH, bottom of Creek View, and using BST.
Although not offically open you can also cross at the diversion dam and the cross over just above the diversion dam.

Thanks for the update. I took BST over today. The trails I rode were okay with some puddles. I would avoid eagle crest for another day though. I bailed early on that one, too muddy.

Update: Questar is expected to be out of Corner Canyon by June 1st, but the trails will be f**ked up for a while and will require extensive rehabilitation. Rush might be opened by the end of the week. The middle section of Rush will be passable but will need major reconstruction.

Looking for an able bodied person to come chainsawing up AF Canyon with me this afternoon. The hike will be approx. 3 miles round-trip up the SFLDC #252 trail, north section. I'd like to meet at the Pine Hollow gate at 3:45 or so. Out of the canyon between 7 & 8pm. Your responsibility will be to carry the first-aid kit and help clear off the cut logs and branches (not that heavy, really). Come enjoy the canyon solitude before the gates open (and until the chainsaw starts rippin'!). Here's your chance to give back. Takers?

Rode this morning...
Ralph's - BST - Gasline - Ghost falls - a few puddles, but good to go.
Upper Ghost - road - Brocks - a few puddles - good to go
Corral - shitty mud hole! New const has left lots of loose soil that is now mud - stay on road to avoid it.
Anne's - tater to coyote - few puddles good to go.
Coyote - canyon hollow - ghost - one soft spot on Canyon where new construction has left loose soils - good to go.
Rattler - BST - Orson smith - couple of pudles, no mud - good to go.

Bill Becker called me yesterday to let me know they have already done a bunch of re-work on the South Maple Hollow trail, which I really appreciate since when I do ride CC (which isn't a whole lot) I pedal up this trail. He also said the plan is to reroute the bottom portion (which now just plunges down a double-track dirt road) to connect with Brookside Drive. Brookside Drive is currently barricaded off and the plan is to remove the barricades and develop a nice trailhead parking lot at the end of the road. This will be really nice for those of us starting in Utah County!

Whenever I do the Spring Hollow climb (3 miles with 1000' of elevation gain) that snakes through the South Mountain Golf Course to the top of Potato Hill I always think to myself "Hey, maybe when I get too old to race mountain bikes I'll take up golf and ride around in one of those cute little golf carts and call it exercise". And then I laugh myself silly when I suddenly realize the day I'm too old to race I'll be dead.

A little rain last night was much needed. The trails have been so dusty and loose.
The lower trails are mostly dry. As you climb it gets wet. It wasn't squishy until I reached the top of north ghost falls parking. From there up the top layer sticks to your tires. Not enough to rut, just a little more wet. Then down Ann's the same until a ways down, then it's perfect and fast!

Im not sure why people don't read signs anymore. Going up clarks i passed about 12 preschool kids and there leaders. Coming down Rush I passed 2 hikers. I pick these trial so that i do have to worry about these encounters.

Creekview will be an awesome single track when they are finished with it. But it will probably not be good for the rest of the year as it will need to season under the winter snow.
ALSO.... I rode the new currently unnamed CC Downhill today. It is still currently under construction and closed to the public. But I was riding today with one of the big dogs of the Draper Trails committee so we were allowed to poach it. The trail isn't much fun at the moment as it's 6" of loose dirt, but I can tell you it's going to be awesome when completed. That is also a trail they want completed before the snow flies so it will season under the wet snow load.

Mercer is a fun little trail. I just do it from the top as a down and back up as it doesn't currently loop well with anything. But it will when the south side is complete. Connecting Mercer with the Peak View TH is currently a mess with all the construction up top.
The south side is scheduled to have several DH trails. The first is currently being built and starts midway along Eagle Crest just west of the mid point TH. The trail is being built by Gravity Logic. Or you can join the Bogley group of Strava and check out my tracks from Wednesday to see the new DH.

There is a new piece of trail that has been freshly cut on creek view at the bottom. It now takes a sharp turn and connects you to the road. Nice addition.
I hope that's all the work planned, the top section is still 80% single track.

I spent the morning riding the South Side of Corner Canyon. The new Maple Hollow Trail is a fun one and will make a great return trail for the new downhill being built by Gravity Logic. Mercer Hollow is becoming an excellent trail as it seasons. I hadn't ridden Mercer since just after it was built and it was still suffering from the typical new construction problems (read loose dirt). The only down side of Mercer is it doesn't loop with anything worth while so I just ride it as a down and back up. It looks like the new downhill is nearing completion, I'm betting they are trying to finish it before the snow flies so it can winter under a blanket of snow and emerge in primo condition in the spring. It also appears they are building a new trail from the Maple Hollow TH that will climb to the Alien Tower (aka survey triangulation marker).

Climbing back up South Maple Hollow on Saturday afternoon, someone has tacked up a "Foot Traffic Only" sign at the spot on the below map where I put the red circle. It made me have one of those 'what the heck' moments. The sign wasn't there last Thursday. I'm guessing it's a mistake because, if accurate, there is no other way to get up South Maple Hollow, by bike, to the Eaglecrest trail. Seriously, WHAT THE HECK?!

Definitely seems wrong. utahmountainbiking.com/trails/maplehollowS.htm just posted this the other day as a new route! They note that this will be the uphill trail to get you to Eagle Crest to run the new DH. Is it marked that way from the top too?

It's not signed from the top down. I'm pretty sure it's not legit. If it was legit I don't think they'd tack it to a tree. As a trailbuilder / maintainer myself, the only time we've ever tacked signage on a tree was this summer for the Tibble Fork trail closure.

The sign is gone now. When I was coming down the trail yesterday a guy coming up looked at the sign and said "that's wrong" and ripped it down. All I said to him was the trail is not signed at the top coming down as I also knew the sign did not belong.
The main reason I knew the sign did not belong is I was taking with some of the trail crew the other day about the new DH and they were explaining the South Maple Hollow would be the return.

The trail is well designed and the table tops become fun rollers if you are going slow or huge jumps if you are hauling ass. Next spring this trail will be better than titties and beers.

Wahoo Elemnt. I really, really like it. The interface and setup is all done from your smartphone including what information you want displayed and in what order but, you don't have to have your smartphone with you or the app even turned on when riding. The mapping software is supposed to be better than Garmin. Satellite reception & tracking has been stellar, even in the deep canyons up AF Canyon. Uploads to Strava automatically once the ride is completed. Is it better than the Garmin equivalent? I dunno. I think it may be a tad cheaper and I love the fact that Wahoo is constantly upgrading the software with new features that you don't have to pay extra for. As a part-time bike shop employee, I couldn't pass up the deep discount offered by the Wahoo rep when the unit first came out last spring. http://www.wahoofitness.com/gps-bike-computer-elemnt

Fat biking in Corner Canyon is officially open! Hit the trails tonight - dropped in from the top to the Peak View corral, had to walk and push through drifts thinking I had made a huge mistake having the wife drop me off. It's all downhill I told myself. As I got started across the corral I saw what looked like a groomed trail crossing from Ann's to Brocks. As I pushed the last 50 feet I was elted to see that it was infact a pcked trail! Lots of bike tracks packing it into a good route. There were snowmobile tracks visible through the bike tracks in spots letting us know that someone is starting to groom it already. It appears that the same loop as last year is ready to ride - Coyote, Tater, Ann's, Brocks, Canyon, Silica Pit. We rode down the canyon side and it was great - well packed for the most part. Back at the temple we headed down to the Equestrian Center - the dirt road had some icey sections so we rode on the sides of the road in 5" of untracked snow - muey goodo. I'm thinking tomorrow I will ride clockwise up Canyon and down Ann's.

I tried to start at the top of Maple but was sinking 6 and more inches in and couldn't make it more than 100 ft. My wife waited to see if we were going to make it - fortunately we just hiked the bikes back to the truck then headed down to the new asphalt dropping into Peak View. The trails need to freeze over after Mike grooms them, or get a lot of traffic to pack them down - neither of which happened on Maple.
We usually head out about 7:00 with lights. My truck is in the shop so I'm dependent on my buddy for a few days. There is room for you if he can make it tonight. I'll call im later this morning and get back to you.

Trails had gotten a little icy in spots by the time I got out on Tuesday, Thermometer in my truck read 39, so I expected a bit soft and some slush... nope icy and slick! Maple was slick, Ann's a little better to the tunnel, Ann's up was decent, Canyon Hollow heading down was good, Road out to the Equestrian Center was slick and scary.
Tonight Acca and I hit it again. The few inches of snow that fell yesterday has been lightly packed. Traction was great! Probably the fastest that I have been on snow heading downhill. Maple had a couple slick spots but good, Ann's to the tunnel was fast and grippy, Ann's up was about as good of traction as I've had, Canyon Down was great, and finally Creek View was fast. Great conditions reat ride!

I rode CC today. Some of the lower south facing slopes are now open if you choose your trails wisely. Today was the first day I thought the trails were dry enough to ride. Rattler to Ghost Falls is open, Gas Line is open, Creekview is open, lower North Ghost is open, Quail is open, Aqua Duct is open and the CC Road is open and that's about it.
You can look at my Strava track from today and see exactly what is rideable. Monday's rain really melted a lot of snow and Tuesday's winds helped dry the mud.

I rode up from the equestrian this morning. Thought I shouldn't have brought the fat bike for a bit. All the south facing lower trails (gasoline and rattler) were dry, but will be muddy in spots during the day. From the ghost falls bridge up is snow covered. Including all of canyon hollow. Anything in the trees has a trace to 2 inches of snow. The fat bike did great. Could probably put a lower loop together including bear canyon bridge on a skinny tire. Going to be some mud during the day in places.

Horses are not really an issue in Corner Canyon. I ride 5 days a week and 60 to 70 miles a week in Corner Canyon and my average encounter with horses is about once a week.
The real asshats are the trail runners with headphones, which is over half of them. They can't hear you even when you scream, and then when you startle them they get all bent out of shape and pissy.
Mountain bikers with headphone can also be real asshoats, but they are kind of rare in CC. It's easy to tell the douchebag MTB riders because they are kind enough to wear headphones so they are easy to identify. :roflol:

Someone posted Monday morning that they had showshoed up Canyon Hollow and down Ann's and that it was rideable. I was skeptical, but had to try it. I talked my wife into dropping me and a friend at the top of the new subdivision so I could drop into PeakView to roll from there.
The 1/4 mile from the subdivision to PeakView was drifted pretty much and we had to hike most of the way. Across the corral was just as bad - we were following a single set of snowshoe tracks at that point. Taking the Brock's Cut Off to Canyon Hollow wasn't much better - hike a bike for maybe 60% of the distance. When we got to the intersection is was obvious that there werre a couple of more snowshoe sets packing the trail. Heading down we were able to pedal some and hike some for the next 1/4-1/2 mile. A few of the steeper sections allowed to roll better but still needed pedaling - downhill!
About 1/2 way down you could tell that there were more showshoe tracks - like some folks had hiked up part way and turned around. The more traffic the better the trail got. I led the whole way, my friend noted that staying in my tracks made it rideable, just hard to stay in them. WE talked that if a half dozen bikes would hit it just once we would have a rideable route. By the time we got to the Ghost connector it was rideable - tough going but at least we were upright.
Cutting across the Silica Pit was just a push in 8-10" of loose snow. The ramp back up to the temple was rideable on and off. We turned down just shy of Coyote trail head and rolled the trail/road to the tunnel - rideable but sketchy.
Let me just say that the smiley guy who posted that he had showshoed it must not ride a fat bike. As in he has no clue as to what is and isn't rideable - but I do thank him for making tracks and providing a start for us to build upon.

With the weather yesterday, Tuesday, I thought that if only a few people had tried Canyon Hollow it would be pretty rideable. Again I met some buds and had the wife drop us at the top just before 8:00 pm. The stretch from the Subdivision to Peak View was just like Monday night - I thought that I hade made a big error and was in for another couple of miles of hike a bike.
The corral was windblown with the trail somewhat findable and better packed than Monday night. 2/3 of the way across the corral it was tight enough to mount up and go for it. It looked like a couple of more bikers had made the trek as there were now multiple tracks packing a rideable trail. In fact... I was able to ride from there all the way to the tunnel at the Equestrian Center. It was tough going in spots, slid out numerous times on the corners, and I came off a couple of times... but I was able to ride it top to bottom, There were 3 of us, so I'm guessing the trail is just that much better and packed after our passing.
Having done this 2 nights in a row I can say that if you want to fatbike Canyon Hollow it is GOOD-TO-GO. I recommend riding top to bottom as the snow is soft enough to make uphill traction difficult to maintain.

I heard the Three Falls bridge over the gorge had been completed so, yesterday afternoon I pedaled up to check it out. The trail terminates at the new subdivision by Slide Rock. Supposedly the developer is going to put in a trail or way to get over to Lambert Park. I read somewhere that for now though, he doesn't want guys to pedal through the construction so, I turned around at that point and went back up. The Three Falls Trail is a nice, new addition to the CC trails system.

The new Mercer to Hog connector at the top of Mercer Hollow trail should be opened shortly. Trail guys to walk it for completion later this week/first of next.
Gravity Logic is still working on the new downhill that will start a bit to the west of Levitate.
Talking the trail guys this morning while doing some volunteer work on Vertigo... Says the continuation of Rush is scheduled for this summer. They are working out details but plan to connect the bottom of Rush to Creekview and make it a downhill only also. To do so they are working out another uphill trail on the creekview side of the canyon. He nooted that part of the impetus for this is the high speeds bikers carry down the roadway to EQ - complaints from hoof and boot types. They figure if they can get the speedy folks off the road it will benifit all sides. I usually connect up the two routes anyway - it will be nice to not have to worry about the uphill folks on Creekview.
Trails guy said that the trails opened last year got them to 100 miles of useable trails. They have another 11 miles planned for this year.
It was nice to spend some time on trail repair with them. It gives some insight as to the battles they fight on our behalf. They were most worried about getting the trail done and re-opened to the public by the end of the day. It's nice to hear from them how it's all about making it a great place to recreate - and minimal down time helps alleviate traffic to other crowded areas.
Got them talking about the volunteer hours donated each year - roughly 4000 - and the percentages attributed to which groups. It was an eye opener to see that the MTB groups account for a very small part of that (including the HS teams). He said it's really sad to see all the banter and complaining on the bike FB sites which have thousands of members, yet their participation is dismal at best. I was one of 4 volunteers this morning - and the only Draper resident. I may have to help them more often... we all should.

I have often thought that Creekview should be downhill only. It’s one of my favorites and a great way to finish a ride to the EQ.
I often climb up Creekview, it's also better then getting mowed down by riding the road. The guys bomb dropping the road are a danger to everyone. I've almost been taken out a couple of times by some asshat. I try to avoid the road as much as possible.

I rode this AM. EQ up, gaseline, ghost (top and bottom) are GTG. Most of my Strava route was GTG except we had to pick up our bikes and walk around a few places along Rush. Also Brocks from the road down through the trees has a couple spots too. Couple puddles here and there on higher trails. I think most trails will be dry if it gets really warm today and CC will be 100% by Sunday. Anything up high in the trees will be muddy today.

I rode the new Mercer Mountain trail yesterday and really enjoyed it. What a great way to hook eagle crest and peak view together without having to do the boring ride through the subdivision.
I also noticed they had started to build the new hog hollow trail.

I rode the new Zooropa trail today in CC. It starts just west of Levitate and ends same as Levitate. It's going to be an awesome flow trail after it seasons a bit. The downhill guys are going to bitch but the cross country guys are going to love it. The trail flows well but to get a really fast time there are sections you're going to want to pedal. There is also one small climb about a third of the way down that the guys on a heavy DH rig are going to hate, which on a XC bike is not really much of a climb.
I think the real issue is the XC guys are going to own the top Strava times and that just drives the DH guys bonkers.

I rode the new Achtung Baby Downhill flow trail this morning and it's going to be awesome once it's seasoned. I predict it will be the best of all the recent south side flow trials in a couple of years. Only downside is the return is kind of boring as it just climbs up the Hog Hollow 2 track (big yawn). The return is not difficult or steep it's just wide and boring. Kind of like making love to a fat chick, not much to see, just keep pedaling.

Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Boy and the second half...that's right, the second half of Joshua Tree are the only U2 worth owning.

If you like to use Coyote Hollow Trail head (by the temple in CC), you might wanna show up tomorrow evening, Tuesday August 7th at 6:30 at Draper city hall to voice your opinion of the expansion of the trail head. Draper City's Master Plan, approved a couple of years ago, had this area slated for a larger parking lot, restroom, bike wash station, water fountain, etc. further away from the homes up in the clearing to the E / SE. The neighbors are putting up quite a fuss. If you want to help convince the city council that it is needed, please show up and speak your mind.

Sat there for 4 hours last time they wanted to talk about this. Several members of Council seemed like good folks - One was lost, and full of herself. Nothing moved forward, and I understand the "committee" they formed stalemated. Nee to go to support the trail folks - maybe they can muster more than 3 of us this time!

She's awful. I think one of the reasons Troy Walker ended up being re-elected (after slitting his throat over the whole "bring the homeless here" thing) is because Weeks was the other candidate.
She's also on the School Community Council. She didn't make a lot of friends in the schools there.

What was the opposition's reasoning? Just anti crowd in general?NIMBY
Not in my backyard.
What kills me is this trailhead is next door to the temple and they have no issue with that traffic, if fact many moved to the neighborhood to be close to the temple. A recent study showed the temple was responsible for 1500 cars a day, while the trailhead was responsible for 150.
FWIW, this trailhead expansion has been on the Draper City master plan for nearly 20 years, it's not something new. The only new part is they are actually going to build it.

Nope, still a few days away from lower south facing trails being open. The Aqua Duct Road is still muddy and has snow drifts, that is always the first rideable trail in CC.
I think the recent snow with high wind is going to cause some slow trail openings because of all the deep drifts in CC.

Rush Trail Extension
The popular Rush Trail in Corner Canyon, which currently is 3.5 miles of single-track downhill-only bike trail, will be extended another 1.3 miles to the Andy Ballard Arena. Once this phase of construction is completed, the entire trail will be 4.8 miles from the upper end of the canyon, at Peak View Trail Head to the bottom of the canyon, near the arena.
As part of the construction plan, there will be several new footpaths and realignment of trails to create a “hub” system to help reduce user conflicts between foot traffic, bike riders and horseback riders.
Draper City has selected SingleTract Trails as the contractor for the project. They plan to start the project within the next few weeks and finish the project in June, weather permitting. The impact to the overall trail system will be minimal during the construction, however, a few sections of trail, including the Creek View Trail, will need to be closed for extended times. We ask all trail users to please stay off any posted closed trail.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190328/f2e7f74139f73327eff050da3f8ed4cb.jpg

Levitate is open, Vertigo is closed. Vertigo will probably open sometime next week.
Creekview is closed as they are realigning trails in that section. A short section of the new Lower Rush is now open.
The new hiking only jungle trail is also now open and will follow below the new Rush Trail.
I believe the big intent with the lower section of CC is to get the hikers off the road and go get the high speed downhill bike traffic onto a designated downhill bike only trail.

They have basically extended Rush from the 3-way down to the EQ. While part of it is open it's still a work in progress as they are also realigning part of lower Rush. So I'd wait for it all to be completed before making a trip over just to ride what's currently completed.
FWIW - the high speed bike traffic from the 3-way down to the EQ has always been a major issue and cause for concern. The new section of Rush was completed in the hope of moving most the high speed MTB traffic to a designated downhill only trail.
