Ten minutes late to work today, but it was all worth it. Took the 5:30am shuttle up to Guardsman pass and rolled down snapping pictures on the way to the bottom of Mill Creek. Had to skip pipeline due to time. With the rain yesterday it made it a perfect morning to ride this trail.

From Gregg Bromka’s book “Mountain Biking Utah” on biking the White Rim Trail: “A single-day trip is an incomprehensible feat for the average biker and one that shatters the difficulty scale”. Speaking of the Murphy Hogback and Hardscrabble climb, he says, “…both are despairingly steep.”! Not touting my own horn, just wish I would have read his description before my trip!

What is a ride in the dirt without losing even a little bit of skin.... You can see in the middle of the photo where my front wheel started sliding out... I am not 100% sure how this happened, but it ended up much, much, better than I originally thought it was going to... I had a good rate of speed going and thought...."this is going to hurt"...but by the time I hit, I was barely moving....

My legs are feeling pretty strong and my lungs are good.... But my tech abilities on the dirt need the dust knocked off them.... Going up and coming down, I was all over the place at times....

I spent anther day in paradise riding my bike in Corner Canyon. Found a new trail just built in the past week called "quail trail". I think I laid down the first tire tracks on the trail. The trail still needs a little work.

Last year at this time I was blind in my left eye and the docs didn't know if they could save it. Now I have about 70% of my vision back in the eye so it's extra special seeing the colors still on the trees.

Monday (Oct. 15) I rode from Cedar City up to Chessmen Ridge Overlook in Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument. Yes, it was cold up there!! But I got to check out the newly repaired Hwy 14, and there were some awesome views looking south toward Zion NP.

Yeah, I originally bought the calf guard to protect the stitches from my spring time wound and now it feels funny to ride without it. My sprocket wound was one of the worst I have seen, but since I received it I have discovered a lot of others have been bitten by the sprocket.

No pics, but re: the weather, I rode my road bike up Big Cottonwood Canyon twice last week, and hope to do it again today or tomorrow. I took the turn up toward Guardsman Pass, and it was clear to the end of winter maintenance (which is about 3/4 mile up from the turn, right where the big turnout/vista point with the vault toilet is). Never thought I'd still be riding up there in November!!

Yeah, unless you're looking to frame up some photos, the smart phone is all you need nowadays for decent shots. You'll find yourself taking more photos too because with a still shot camera it's a lot of work to stop, take your pack off, unzip, open up the camera case, turn it on, line up the shot and shoot, then put it all away.

With the phone you just keep it in your pocket and grab it on the fly. Gotta have a camera ready when you come across a Bear anyways :lol8:

But anyways, I use the HDR Camera app for my phone. Still maybe not a quality to hang in an art gallery but it does ok. These shots were taken with my phone:

Rode Corner Canyon today. Lower canyon and stuff with a southern exposure is dry. The northern exposure side is now closed for the winter.

It's going to take a little adjustment. Part of the problem is it was the first real ride in 3 months and I'm a ltitle out of practice. I also need to dial in the suspension, but I'm waiting for it to warm up a bit.

At one point I was thinking... this new bike is hard to pedal... then I looked behind and noticed I was sinking in 2" of mud.

Everything below the diversion dam is open in Corner Canyon. You can ride to Ghost Falls, but only the north loop is open. It will be at least two weeks before Corral Hollow and the rest of the south side trails are open. BST is open from CC to the Sandy Park.

Rode the Ghost Falls Trail up to Jacob's Ladder and rode Rush down today. Rush has a couple minor muddy sections but everything else is primo. Goodbye winter.... hello spring.

Anther day and anther ride to the top of Corner Canyon and back. I'm finally getting the suspension on my new bike dialed in. I'm looking forward to the leaves appearing on the trees in the canyon. The grass is greening up, but no leaves yet.

Right now I'm avaiable most days around noon if anyone wants a Corner Canyon partner. Looks like I'll be riding part of the summer with the Corner Canyon High School Mtn Bike Race Team as I signed up to be a ride leader... err... with these young guns probably more of a ride follower. :haha:

But I'm even more excited that my youngest daughter has joined the team and plans to take up racing. The high school circuit consists of five races with the final being a November race in Moab.

That was going to be my second guess. There is some sketchy lines on that trail. I am spoiled with the Canyons and I-street where there is long wide landings and more forgiving drops and gaps. That looks like the drop with the cement ramp at the top of a rock cliff.

This isn't that one...they call that one "base jump" and I don't think I ever want to hit it. Looks like a broken collarbone waiting to happen (at least for me). This one is closer to the bottom. It's only about a 6 footer but doesn't have the best run in to it.

I really really wish I lived closer to the Canyons. Only went once last summer but loved it, even though I left with a broken hand.

Chere, did you do the ride in one day or multiple? Photo's of pedaling up Murphy's never do it justice. The hardest climb for me was up Hardscrabble. Probably because it was towards the end and I was beat.

We took four days to ride the rim. Hardscrabble is easier to ride then Murphy's but I rode hard to catch up to my group that day. I had stopped to check out the grainery and have lunch and was about 20 min behind them. I peddled as fast as I could to catch up and it was hot. So by the time I made it to Hardscrabble my legs were already spent. I still rode more of Hardscrabble than I did of Murphy's. Loved the downhill on both! However nothing compared to the last stretch on Mineral Bottom Road. My sit bones were so sore and I was ready for that ride to be over with. Even though it is a gradual uphill and all ride able it just went on F O R E V E R!!! Nothing I did made me comfortable on the bike. I cussed that last bit more than any other section of the ride.

4 days would be cool. My problem with riding it in 1 day, beside that fact that it was just plain brutal, is that there was very little chance to stop and see the sights. It was more like a glance over you shoulder and saying, "That's nice. Wish I could stop"! I was able to pedal all of Murphy's but I had to stop and catch my breath a couple of times. I would have made Hardscrabble without stopping had it not been for a minivan and crazy driver who, while trying desperately to power up the road, forced me too far over to the edge and into the soft dirt. Who takes a minivan on White Rim?!

With the rain the day before we started and day of the sand was not bad. They detoured our support vehicles from Schaefer to Potash road for our start. Mud on the bike was awful!! But made riding the trail the next three days really nice.

Hah, probably! There was a bunch of younger folks all bunched up right at Hardscrabble. Don't know if it was one big group or several smaller ones but, I'm guessing they were a support vehicle for them. A bunch of the youth were piled on that rock outcropping at the top, cheering on those of us pedaling up. I heard later that some of the girls were even flipping up their shirts, baring their chests, as encouragement. Sadly, I was so concentrated on getting to the top without stopping that my head was down and I didn't notice.

While this a creative picture, I wouldn't dare put my xtr shifters under water. There are approximately 40 moving parts in each shifter that are nearly impossible to repair or lubricate and expensive to replace. For someone like Chere that can find a gear and just pedal it may not matter, but for me, I do a lot of shifting with my 49-1/2 lb. bike. :mrgreen:
