I pounded out 20 miles on the mountain bike today. The only downside is now my ass is sore. Feels like I spent the night on Brokeback Mountain.

As of yesterday if you want to ride dry trails.... start at the equestrian park. Up to BST, east on BST which puts you up on the dry stuff. BST is dry out to Bear Canyon. You will intersect Gas Line which is dry to Ghost Falls using the North Loop. But the best trail of all is the new Rattle, which was new as of November last year and is dry to Ghost Falls. It interests BST above Gas Line and below the Corner Canyon Road.

If you come down let me know when and I'll see if I can ride with you.

The high point between 12th street and jumpoff canyon, completely dry the whole way. Taken last night.

Also ran into @ahansen60 (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=17543) and @gholt (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=18689) on the trail. Lots of folks out last night on the trail.

You might not be thinking of the right drop.

The bigger one is up at the TOP of the trail, this is is actually pretty close to the bottom. Only about a 6 foot drop depending on where you land. The one on top of the trail is closer to a 10 foot drop with a less friendly run out.

Ended up riding Jem trail instead of gooseberry. Guys were to tired after 3 days of riding so we shuttled the Jem trail a few times instead. Much more fun then peddling up and back down.

Yeah, I rode that trail because it is was close to the holiday inn where we were staying and could ride from hotel. I rode solo while the rest of the gang went hiked a slot canyon.....? It was a fun trail. The tunnel under the freeway was cool as well. I rode clockwise but wonder in counter is the way to go...? I liked it though.

Yeah, that and always thinking I have food trapped in there somewhere and always having stray hairs in my mouth (could never get used to that one). I had to grow it out for "A Christmas Carol" I was in and I liked it for x-country skiing but, since it's not cold and there's not enough snow to ski, I couldn't think of a good reason to keep it on anymore!

Bruce had a write up on Utah Mountain biking website: http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/devilscastle.htm

I only did a 5 mile loop. Didn't see any reason to ride all the way back down to Alta for the 6 mile loop. I parked off Albion Basin Road. It's a good ride for taking pictures but the ride itself sucks. The first 3 miles is on dirt road with a ton of cars kicking up dust every 5 seconds. Then you start a deceptively nice descent that lasts only a quarter mile and immediately switches to a fall line trail complete with ruts and all. A lot of work with no payoff. I wouldn't ride it again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Unless you wanna take a few pics of the Basin.

Near Stanley Idaho. This ride was unbelievably awesome. It slots into the top 3 rides I have ever done. The riding was technical, smooth, steep, gentle, really some of everything. The scenery and views were breathtaking. Unfortunately this gem has now been made illegal thanks to the newly designated wilderness area. Sigh. Wilderness and bicycles should co-exist. There's no good reason for the blanket exclusion. I supposed that's another topic though. Enjoy the pictures.

My son in Park City, his favorite place to ride now, too bad it's an hour away. This is his first year in the mountains and he went from struggling on anything remotely technical to making me scared for his safety a little, and that's a good thing.

I haven't been on my mtn. bike for 3 weeks now and I'm going stark, raving mad! I was going down a short section of trail and bumped something with my brand new 1x11 rear derailleur which pushed it into my rear wheel. Not only did the derailleur get absolutely destroyed but it broke every spoke on that side of the wheel! The Shimano XT 1x11 derailleur has been in such high demand that Shimano didn't have any left in stock so, I had to wait for that. Then, because my spokes are bladed and not the common variety, I had to wait for those as well. ARRGGHH! It should be done today. Fingers crossed.

It was fun. Definitely different on dirt. Traction was amazing on the loose uphill stuff but, even at 28 lbs, pushing so much rotating weight made the really steep, longer climbs challenging. Fully rigid was pretty jarring- even with the big volume tires. Started out at 20psi. Dropped the front to 15 which felt better. I doubt I'll ride her on dirt much from here on out but, I couldn't NOT ride it at least once before the snow flies.

I have 90mm rims with schwalbe jumbo Jim's 4.0. I started of with 12 psi, and after 200 plus miles on it I have settled at 6.5 psi. I never thought I'd go that low but it works great. Psi is very critical on these fat tires, just a small amount makes a big difference. I LOVE it in the dirt!

Hmmm... you may have to flip it on your phone, like "hard" rotate by going to the menu and selecting Rotate Left or Right. The phone seems to guess which way is up, but doesn't assign that property to the photo.

Good Water Rim Trail video footage from Saturday. If you took the trail itself and put it out in the middle of nowhere with nothing to look at, nobody would ever ride it. Having the trail on the rim of the Little Grand Canyon however, makes for a spectacular must do ride. Perfect day and temps and, considering there were a gazillion campers in the area, we ran into very few people actually on the trail.

That looks like a cool trail, I recently watched Bruce's version too. Looks like he's got himself a drone now, good for him.

Lately on my rides, I think I'm more interested in the scenery than the trail itself. There's the Bonneville SHoreline Trail up North of the North Ogden Divide. It's a great trail, very well built, berms on the corners and everything, but the scenery sucks. I don't think I'll ride it anytime soon. This trail though, the Good Water Rim, looks like it has awesome views.

Maybe it's the photographer in me, but I prefer great views over the technical trails. I'd really like to get down there and ride this one.

It would be an amazing trail to get drone footage from. I think it's just BLM land so, no restrictions that I'm aware of. I was biking with my buddy who doesn't pedal much anymore and is way out of shape but, this isn't a trail to ride fast anyway. Stop frequently and look over the edge. I think this area is probably the most spectacular spot that most Utahn's haven't ever heard of. It's also just over a 2 hour drive from house in PG so, relatively close.

Did you do the full 21 mile loop? How long did it take? I assume coming from the Ogden area, about 3 hours drive each way, then ride, it could all be done in 1 day without leaving at ridiculous hours.

tallsteve
04-17-2017, 11:28 AM
Yep, full loop. Here's my Strava track: https://www.strava.com/activities/943765334. 2:17 hours of actual moving time; 3:35 overall time. The elevation gain is goofed up for some reason. The actual gain is only around 1,000' which includes the dirt roads back to the parking spot. An easy get up early, drive down, pedal, get back home before dark ride.

I was there that same weekend and rode that trail Saturday morning. That was busiest trail I have seen bikes were almost tire to tire the entire trail.
That is a great trail though. We also rode some trails in grand junction on Friday. My buddy broke his collar bone on the ribbon trail, we hiked back up to the car to get him to the hospital.

Looks like we could have seen each other on the trails.

Quite possible. We rode the following:

Thursday: Western Rim from the Rabbit Valley Exit off i-70. Then we did a Ribbon to Gunny loop shuttle
Friday: Horsethief Bench - Steve's Loop - Moore Fun - Rustlers Loop. Then we did a few laps out on 18 road; PBR, Kessel Run, Joe's Ridge
Saturday: Ribbon to Free Lunch to Holy Cross. Then Butterknife in the afternoon
Sunday: another lap on Horsethief, because it's full of super awesomeness.

101 total miles for the weekend.

Your picture you show above does look to be the Western Rim, from the western portion of the trail, if I were a bettin' man.

Looks like we road a lot of the same trails, just mostly on different days.

Thursday: whiterim (might have seen you there?), free lunch
Friday: zippity doo dah, pbr, kessel. Ribbon (where friend broke collar bone)
Saturday: 2 loops of Horsethief bench. And went home.

There are a lot of fun rides in that area. I'd recommend trying it out if you haven't ridden before.

I tried an ebike for a bit tonight. WOW! Actually, very interesting experience. You can join the cool kids and laugh about them but honestly you're missing out on a cool ride.

Sure there's a time and place for them, they aren't for every trail. But honestly, every fear and excuse to hate them is completely unfounded and false.

Did you Strava all your new KOM's? That is honestly my biggest bitch about ebikes.

ha ha, no. I don't Strava. I thought I would start a while ago but I just never got into it. I just ride and take pictures.

It is a good point though, the KOMs possibly getting skewed by ebikes. I think somehow they'll figure out a way to detect an ebike and will either categorize it as such, or put it in some kind of "practice mode" or something, just so bikers could truly filter out ebike results in the Strava app.

I think if ebike manufacturers did something for this, maybe a bluetooth tool on the bike so if it links up on Strava, it's immediately disqualified from recording a KOM. Or then again, they could open up a new category specifically for ebikes in Strava.

These bikes are here to stay, and if the industry embraces them, it'll be better for riders and non ebike riders, alike.

Ok, so, tell me what happened over on the MTBEU facebook page. Looks like I missed all the drama.

ha ha ha, I'll have to get a little write up going with some nice conversation screenshots. But basically I posted this same picture there, and the group was having a fun, healthy discussion, joking around on both sides, and then I get the private message from Landon Boogaard, the admin, telling me to stop trolling or I'd get booted out. At that point I started to see how the whole attitude there was pretty pathetic, a bunch of bikers trying to gain respect from others by mocking other beginner bikers, what they are wearing, things like that.

So I made a few last comments, just curious if I had been banned yet, then I just left the group and Landon blocked me from his personal account too. Ha ha, it's these kinds of dramatic nuggets that make it all worth it.

In short, if we mock others for wearing cargo shorts while they ride, or their lack of a dropper post, or in any way a shortcoming of dressing like the "real bikers", it shows our own insecurities.

Some folks need to decide if they really do want to welcome others to this sport, or if we just want to hold it as an envious status, out of reach for newcomers. You could say I'm #Triggered by the arrogance of those who feel they are truly special, and a gift to the industry.

In short, the admin is a little power tripping guy who may be over-evaluating his status in society for running a facebook group, and it's hilarious.

Jeez. Yeah, I don't read everything on MTBEU and if I do go there I skip through everything pretty quickly. Way to much snark, name calling, entitlement and 'my opinion is the only one that matters' attitude, along with people writing stuff that they'd never dare say to someone's face. I could care less what people ride or wear. I never rubber-neck to see what bike the other guy is on or what bling he has installed. I just don't care. I do my research and buy/ride what I think will work for me then enjoy the gear, workout and experience. Just like utahmountainbiking dot com was once the goto resource for all things Utah mtn. biking, MTBEU will also one day be pretty irrelevant from being replaced with the next mass social media thing.

Drama over there for sure and a whole bunch of mountain bike elitists. I’ve seen it many times. A post just gets deleted for no reason except an ego at the helm. If the owner doesn’t agree with your line of thinking, he just pulls the trigger.

I was pissed when I saw two of Beech’s post deleted, then he sent me a few of the messages from the owner. Man, that guy has some issues. I noticed he blocked me from his personal account too. I’ve never met the guy and was not friends on FB. Not sure what’s up with the drama. He blocked me from the MTBEU page too after I had already left. Sorry, bro...too late! Lol

Here's a few from a Moab trip last week:

Warmed up for a few hours on Klondike Bluffs.

89491

We considered doing the whole Mag7, but decided we came for fun instead of pain so instead we did a Bull, Run, Arths Corner, Great Escape, Getaway lap. It's a sweet ride that I will definitely do again. Then after lunch went and did a few miles in the branded trails.

89492

89493

The next day we cheated and took a shuttle to Kokopelli and rode down porcupine. 4,500' of descent and only 500' of climbing? Yes, please!

89494

My little bother couldn't quite make it trouble free, but damn that is a ripper.

Body count be rising on the Little Scraggy Trail here in Colorado. It's got a pretty significant downhill at the end, no features, but I'd bet it's mostly handlebars catching trees. Lots of beginners ride this trail. There are at least two trees you have to be careful with...while going fast.

I own three bikes...two modern ones and this blast from the past. It's a '92 KHS Montana with the very first Rockshox model RS1. I actually rode this thing in Moab back in the mid nineties...Slickrock, Porcupine, Amasa Back. A hardtail with 2 inches of front travel. Like a Flintstone mobile.

Of course, I don't ride rough trails with this anymore. It's a town cruiser now...along Cherry Creek to Rockies games, grocery and breakfast runs like this morning.

Although it made of steel, it's light and quick. Believe it or not, the fork has never needed rebuilding. Over the years, I've replaced the cassette, seat post, seat and handlebars.

Figured I'd show off my old-skool American iron since it gets a lot of attention from those who recognize what it is.

Nice. I started mountain biking in '93 when I was 15 years old. That was a sweet bike back in the day that I didn't have the money for, but I checked it out in the catalogs and drooled over them.

A client of mine had just payed $1000 for a new Yeti and I remember thinking that was just a crazy amount of money for a bike. Of course, within a year I bought this...I remember it cost $650.

Indeed, a rebuild on the fork is a no go. I called Wheat Ridge Cyclery, who rebuilds forks and shocks and they told me the same thing...no parts available.

I was thinking about taking it apart, re-using the same seals but adding fresh oil but they assured me that won't work. The caked on gunk from the dirty oil is probably keeping the seals from leaking, and the seals get jacked with removal anyway.

Byron's old KHS Montana...1992-????. Hope I just didn't jinx it.

When I was a kid, the local bike shop sold KHS and GT mountain bikes. I spent a lot of time looking through those catalogs and drooling over the bikes on the floor.

I still remember the first bike I saw that cost $1000. It was the GT Zaskar with a polished aluminum frame and XTR parts hanging off of it and the brand new Rock Shox fork. That thing was awesome. I could never afford it at the time though as I didn't have a job and had to rely on my parent's kindness to get bikes. They were nice, but not that nice. :)

Good times. Now I feel old.

Now I've got to ride that one...or parts of it, at least. I was just in Flagstaff, too.The best miles are from Big Bug trail head to Crown King road. I think that is roughly 26 miles. The rest is pretty gnarly for a loaded fatbike except the last 14 miles which is relatively flat! The entire route is 70 miles.

If you get anywhere near Rock Springs go to the Rock Springs pie cafe and have the pecan bourbon pie! That place is delicious.
