Scott, I think you have us all stumped. :lol8: But, knowing where you spend some of your time and judging by the sandstone, I'm going to guess it's somewhere in Dinosaur NM (yeah, I know, pretty vague). Is the sandstone hill in the background supposed to be a recognizable landmark? I'm going to throw out a completely random guess and say somewhere near Johnson Canyon?
Scott P
01-13-2011, 07:00 PM
Not Johnson Canyon, but a good guess.
Same rocks from above:
40669
It was actually Ely Creek just up from Jones Hole. Since Jones Hole is the most popular hike in Dinosaur and on a trail, I was hoping someone might get it. I guess it would help if there was better landmark since I'm guessing several Bogley members have been there, especially since they knew I hand out in Dinosaur.
I guess I'll try a different photo; different area (this one with a good landmark).
40670
Name the canyon or arch (to narrow it down, feel free to guess the area as well. Once the area is guessed, it will be easy to narrow down).
Hint: Many bogley members frequent the canyons in the area on a regular basis, but most pass over this major canyon.

My first though was Little Flat Top, heading west out of the San Rafael Desert. But I checked my photos and that's not it. It's definitely not along the Little Wild Horse road because the Summerville layers are much higher up along the entire length of that road between GV and the LWHC parking lot (it's all Entrada Sandstone down at the level of the road). So, I'm going to have to go with the Green River Cutoff Road, where it passes near the highest point of the Woodside Anticline. There's really not a name for this specific location, but it's about halfway between El Rancho Not So Grande and US-6.
Edit: The more I think about this, the more I'm sure of my guess. Check out pages 11 and 15 of Desert Magazine from June 1951 for photos of the same formation: http://www.scribd.com/doc/2403358/195106-Desert-Magazine-1951-June
I've done some exploring around there and have even been up on the southern flank of that butte on an old mining road.

Never been there, but I have this ruin in mind as it can be visited by renting a boat for a single day from Bullfrog Marina (the rates for renting a boat on Lake Powell are so high that I can't afford to pay for a multi-day exploration of the lake and side canyons, even if I would love that...).
