You are right, Scott. A day pic would be much better. But I don't have one.

Have a look to the trail register. Mostly hikers were parking there. Some went back and out, other ones starts at a TH, further north. A shuttle would be helpfull - if you have one.

Let's see...with the moon rising or setting we must be looking east or west. And from the photo, it looks like vehicles are traveling around the stand of trees and trail register. I do know that you are likely to be traveling in a RV so the road there must be good.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say Bullet Canyon TH.

EDIT: Dang it, denaliguide beat me to it...Ha Ha

Yes Dave, denaliguide was a little bit faster.
The road was nearly perfect.
I've found a nice spot for bonedocking a couple of yards on South Rd, where the picture was made.
Maybe 3 spots, or so are along that Rd for bigger rigs.
In the morning we hiked from this site to Sheiks, spend a night in lower Bullet and returned to the RV.
That was a great hike.

Cheers.

That's funny because I was just about to post a hint. I'm not sure of the other names, I've only known it by what MK calls it in his Lake Powell book, but those are some interesting names.

Awesome zzyzx! I sure do love all of Lake Powell, but the south end is my favorite and consider it "heaven on earth". The photo was taken from the campground at Wahweap a few years ago and I must say that as far as campgrounds go, this one's pretty lame. Yes. I know right where it was taken, but didn't know there was a name to a body of water other than the evaporation basin.

If anyone does know a name for the body of water, here are the clues:

The barren mountains in the foreground are the Silver Island Mountains and the snowy mountain in the background is Pilot Peak. It was taken from near the north end of the Bonneville Salt Flats and is looking west. Here is another photo, taken very close to the same place to the above, but without the snow or water:

Yep, looks like part of the old UP&L Granite Flume.

tmartenst
11-21-2012, 01:46 AM
Old Jeeper gets it (although mhambi is correct as well). This is accessed pretty easily by parking at one of the early turnouts in the canyon. If you keep following this downcanyon you run in to the failed Tavaci development where a herd of about 30 deer are the only inhabitants. Very cool place with a great valley view for such an easy hike.

I stole this from flickr just now:
July 16, 2011, lower Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County, Utah. Construction on the water flume (middle/right) began in 1896 and was completed in 1897. It remained in use until 1998 when it was replaced with an underground pipe. The total length of the flume was about 1.5 miles and its purpose was power generation: it connected two small power plants, the Stairs Plant at the upper, east end, and one at the base of the canyon to the west, the Granite Power Plant, and owned by the Utah Power Company (later Utah Power and Light). UP&L continued to own the flume throughout its life. Because it was built of wood, it had to be continually repaired. Rock slides and falling boulders also created problems. Documented occurrences involving damage to the flume for example happened as recently as July of 1987 and December of 1994 when the flume was still in operation.
Despite the high amount of visitation that Big Cottonwood Canyon receives for both winter and summer recreation, visitors often are not aware of the existence of the flume that is perched high above vehicular traffic and that is mostly not easily visible when traveling up the canyon, and which is easily missed in view of its short distance and location on visitors proceed back down the canyon.

eastern face of mazatzal peak from the shake tree trail

You have the peak correct! It's actually the other side of the mountain. The east face doesn't drop so precipitously. This shows the west face, taken from Chilson Spring / Camp. Technically this is the Brody Seep Trail, but I would have taken the Mazatzal Divide trail as well.

By the way, don't trust any of the springs in this area unless perhaps you're in a wet spring or winter. An 18-mile hike with no water the last eight is no fun, especially in August.

The second picture is from the Barnhardt Trail looking down Barnhardt Canyon.

It'll be about an hour and a half trip there and back, at least. Beg and plead to make it happen, as it's awesome.

Byron

Does the GCNRA boundary change with the level of the lake on the Navajo Nation?

If not, how could it "sometimes" be in or out? :ne_nau:Well my friend, you just nailed it! Indeed, the spot that I'm in is exactly at the high water mark...a place that very few boats have been to in many years. It's a canyon on the south side of the lake, on Navajo land...the trick is to guess which one it is, of course.

Someone that has been here would instantly recognize it...but like I said, it's very remote and only those with the will to backpack in would reach it. Here, I'll post a couple more shots of the vicinity to help dial it in...remember, this canyon does have a name. Here's another BIG clue...it's in Mike Kelsey's slot guide book...in fact, he took these pictures of me.

There's a double arch at the bottom of Anasazi? Nice guess, but it's a little more to the east....LEHI!!! This pic is where Anasazi hits the lake, above that is a super tight, green mossy, hardcore stemming slot for a good 75 yards, at least.

Byron
03-04-2013, 06:39 PM
That one is pretty damn obscure, I must admit. These canyons though...Moepitz, Anasazi and Lehi are absolutely awesome. It's a chore to get to them, I suppose that's why so few are familiar...more pics and Oldno, you got close enough so it's your turn.
