Yea, sorry about that. Got distracted for awhile!
This one is in Utah and I'm looking for the names of two peaks of where the transition point of the different types of rocks are, in the forefront of the picture. I'm sure many of you in Salt Lake have seen this from far away, but here is a close-up of this transition point (which is very intriguing!)

05-23-2017, 04:28 PM
I wasn't sure where Iron Wash is, but just looked and it's not there. I don't think this slot has a name although the small area it sits in does. I thought I'd wait another day or 2 before giving clues, but perhaps I should give more now as it's a fairly short slot that's not visited that much. Firstly it's a bit deceptive as this is not a canyoneering canyon that canyoneers would go to, it's something people would hike up as I did from its entrance. Perhaps you can also drop into it if approaching from the top/rim somewhere with a bit of scrambling or climbing beyond where I turned round - I'm not sure? - although I guess if I'd kept going to where it dead ends my guess is it may well be a bit steep or some sort of dryfall.

kaniukr
05-25-2017, 02:03 PM
ok, (thought most people don't get to look at the site til a weekend so was giving it a bit longer).
The place is in GSENM and this slot is not near any other slots. It's a short lone slot if you follow the wash inside a wider fairly short canyon. I'm looking for the wider canyon's pretty well known name as I've only heard a guide give a name for the short slot and I think that's just his name for it as I think the slot being only a few hundred feet doesn't have an official name.
If that's not enough my last album of photos on this site in the Dark Room should give it away.
I'm away next week so wont be able to look on here often so shall I put the other easier photo up?

I think the other photo I nearly posted instead of Sidestep should be much easier to guess.

It's Cerro Pelon in Mexico. Pacific Grove California is the other of the two areas where they gather, but you can go.

I'll add one into this opening in the thread.
My daughter and I came across this semblance of a giant chicken sitting on her roost a couple years ago. In a common area, but you'd have to stray a bit from the path to encounter it.

Further east than Devil's Garden? Wouldn't that put you in Colorado?
I thought it looked very similar to the Robber's Roost area. Or possibly at the headwaters of the Poison Springs canyons.

Sorry, I just assumed that interest in the thread was waning..
I realize now there is more than one Devil's Garden, I assumed he meant the Escalante version.
Poison Springs is close to the right area. This location is just a few minutes walk from the paved highway, but you'd need a little luck to find it...

At Powell, just across from Twilight Canyon is a small bay called Little Oak (some call it Secret Canyon)...looming behind it is Navajo Mountain, and in front of that is another, smaller "mountain"...that's it.
On the 7.5 topo it's called "Rainbow"...2500 ft. from the lake to the top. There are two, steep routes from the lake to get out of the little canyon...moki steps up a nose on the west side and and old Navajo route up a nose on the east side. The east side route leads to Mopitz and Anasazi canyons.
When you get to the base of Rainbow, there's only one place to go up and you'll need one good climber and a 60 ft rope for those who aren't. Then make you're way to the west and look for the only chute there is that takes you to the top.
My first time up there was in '01. I was backpacking in the area and a friend and I decided to try to gain the summit on a layover day. We knew nothing about it but found the way up. Lo and behold, there was a can up there with paper and pen...it had about a dozen names on it, among them Steve Allen!
I've been back up there twice since then, most recently last week. On both occasions I couldn't find that can. Either the wind got it or someone brought it down.
The views up there, as you might imagine, are fantastic.
Excellent guesswork, Kurt. You're a lake guy, so I figured you'd get it.
The picture is near the top looking down into Oak Creek (the big one with the perennial stream).

Been there, done that. First time 1985 and last time 1994. There are some great canyons in the area. We did a bunch of canyoneering in the area in the late 80's and early 90's. Fun stuff...

Nice shot. A photographer who likes looking for unique shots once showed me an aerial of a pretty big looking arch really high up in the slickrock around Powell. (Not Rainbow obviously but impressively large looking). But he reckoned it would be really hard to get to - certainly going up to it - because of cliffs after studying google earth. I’m not sure if it even has a name but probably the Navajo would have had one for it. I’ve never seen photos of it

Here is one that will be difficult unless you have actually seen it, or viewed a photograph of it, or read about it in something written in English, or seen it painted on a canvas, or visited it in a dream. When I took this photo a friend commented that he'd been past it over a hundred times and never stopped. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180723/96a54aeda3a44cb9e4636b7cebb77677.jpg

As soon as I saw that picture I figured it was in the Grand because that looks like Redwall to me. Never seen that particular hole, though.
I reckon it's downstream from Deer Creek, of course. Perhaps 150 mile? Whitmore? Separation? I've read about one of those canyons west of Kanab Creek having a crux at the top.

Yes, it is downstream from deer creek. Not as obscure as Oden's eye (who wants to look river right up high while running Lava) but you hafta stop and take a short (200m) hike past the busted lower unit to see it.
