Just ordered my new road bike! This is my 1st road bike purchase since owning a Schwinn 10 speed when I was a teenager back in the 70's. While still a mtn. biker by heart, I've found myself riding the road more and more in the spring before the high mountain trails open up here in northern Utah. I've just been using my hard-tail mtn. bike, mounted with slicks, for my road riding. Heck, I even did my 1st century on that rig last April. I've loved the more social aspect of road riding (group rides every Saturday). Looking forward to setting STRAVA PR's on my road routes!

I just added a new ride to my garage, normally I build my own bikes but I found this deal too good to pass up on a 2014 Salsa Horsethief. I've only got one ride on it so far but it is nice and stiff and just the right amount of squish.78069

I spend 95% of my time on my DH bike so I figured it was time to sell my Carbon Trek Remedy 9.9 since it was definitely overkill for the rides I would take it on (following my 5 year old down simple singletrack).

Sold it for $2000 and bought this guy for $400

2015 Trek XCaliber 6. Definitely a downgrade but certainly sufficient for what it will be used for.

We've sold a ton of the X-Cal 6's at the shop. They've proven to be pretty bulletproof for the casual rider but, that is a HUGE downgrade from the Remedy 9! I'm guessing the Suntour fork is going to feel like crap compared to what you're used to.

Definitely, even just riding off the curb at my house I cringed at that thing, but I really do just follow my 5 year old around singletrack when I'm not riding DH, so it willl suffice. Once he starts to pick up the pace a bit I plan on buying a budget, but improved fork. That Suntour really is crappy.

That's what you get for being "tallsteve". I'm the opposite at 5'-6", I'm "shortsteve". I have the opposite problem and have to worry about things like, can I fit a real water bottle in that frame?

I got the 17.5" frame and it feels good. Standover height on the 29er is not quite as nice as my old bike, but when I'm riding it, it feels really good.

I've also got a 1994 Trek 9700 OCLV mountain bike (one of the early carbon mountain bike frames). I'll try to get out and take a picture of the two together. It's interesting to see the the progression in the design of a hardtail mountain bike over the last 20 years. They are very different bikes.

tallsteve

Cool. Yeah, I love my Trek Superfly hardtail but, think the IsoSpeed decoupler on the ProCaliber is a really nice addition and would add some back-end comfort that the Superfly lacks, without going to a full-suspension of course. It's been used successfully on the Trek Domane road bike for several years now and is not just a gimmick.
I wish it came in a 23" frame! Let us know what you think after giving it a spin.

Finally upgraded from my 10 year old Salsa El Santo.

I visited some KSL listings and 4 different shops, then ended up with this 2016 Giant Trance with a seat dropper, new Fox front (32) and rear (float) suspension with lockout. Shimano SLX components. I found that you get a lot more bike when buying a Giant. I got it brand new for $2,400. I heard that Giant is one of the largest bike manufacturers. They make bikes and parts for Trek and other brands. I ended up with a 27.5 wheel. Many of the brands are building mostly 27.5. Cannondale only has a couple 29ers, same as Giant, Trek and others.

Yes and no. Giant owns the overseas factory but, Trek owns their own machinery within the factory and has complete control over production. Trek is also the last big bike manufacturer still wholly owned by an American company, the same family that started the company back in 1976. Even Specialized sold 49% of it's company to a company out of Taiwan a few years ago. That being said, they all make good bikes and I think you'll love your new Giant!

Straight from Wikipedia... :naughty:

Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd. is a Taiwanese bicycle manufacturer that is recognized as the world's largest bicycle manufacturer. Giant has manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, the Netherlands, and China.

tallsteve

...and we're both still correct. Giant is the largest manufacturer (does that necessarily make them the best then?). I was only trying to point out that Giant does own the factory but Trek owns their own machinery within that factory and has their own Trek employees overseeing production. I'm sure the lowly machine/assembly workers are employed by Giant. There's just more to a blanket statement stating that Giant manufactures bikes for Trek. Trek is also the last bike company that still builds their higher-end carbon frame bikes and carbon wheels in their own factory in the US (Waterloo, Wisconsin). Anyway, as a part-time Trek store employee, I have to put in a plug for them when I can!
Switching lines of thought, what do you think of the 27.5" wheels now after a couple of rides?

Yeah, I don't think Giant has the brand power of the other brands either. I looked at Trek, Cannondale, Salsa, Specialized, Scott, Santa Cruz, Pivot and you end up spending a bit more and don't get as much for the $$$. You pay for the name like anything else. I general like to pick the sexy or lesser known brands, but I couldn't beat the price on this one and I cant spend an insane amount on a bike. Too many other hobbies!

I bought a sexy, lesser brand-name bike before (Ellsworth) and regretted it when it came time to submit a warranty claim. The bigger name brands typically have better warranties and honor them with less hassle. I have owned Ellsworth, Giant, Trek, Specialized and Cannondale in the past and have broken them all in the same place- where the top tube meets the seatpost tube. Because of my height, I just put an incredible amount of torque in that spot. Ellsworth was the worst for a warranty claim and Trek has been the best (least amount of hassle with pretty much no questions asked).

I'd be interested in riding at that time tonight! Lights?

Maybe this thread needs to be changed to "Show Us Your Biking Gear". I like biking gear. I like trying new and different things. I've been using a Cateye Stealth 50 GPS computer device the last couple of years. The Stealth 50 has been stellar with no issues whatsoever. It's a true GPS device and I've been able to track my rides in non-cellphone service areas like AF Canyon. What the display lacks is detailed ride info like elevation gain. Detailed ride info can be seen AFTER uploading the ride data to Strava but, only after uploading, and the device has to be plugged into my PC to upload. I've been looking at getting a new device. Price range wise, I narrowed it down to the Garmin 520 and the Wahoo Elemnt, both are newer devices. Anyway, the Wahoo rep came to my bike shop yesterday and gave the staff some training. I came away impressed with what this device can do so, I bit the bullet and ordered one from the rep. I won't go into huge detail on features, suffice it to say that the device setup is all controlled from your smartphone. With just a few flicks on the smartphone app, you control what's displayed on the device and, it's true GPS- you don't need to have your cellphone with you on your ride. Very cool features and better mapping than what Garmin has. Plus, the price was right. The Elemnt retails for about $430 with the heart-rate chest strap. My store employee price direct from Wahoo was $165. Ahhh, the advantages of working a couple hours a week at a bike shop!

I really like it. It is light but, not as light as my high-end Giro. The light / GoPro mount is nice to have and the retention system is flawless. I can tell already that once summer comes, it may be too hot to ride with. That's the been the biggest complaint with online reviews.

I just kitted out a friends bike with XT 1x11. I was surprised how "cheap" the XT stuff is compared to SRAM. Set up very easily for this hack mechanic as well.

I am currently on XO1 1x11 and really like it. I have 2 chainrings, one is a 28t for really big climbing days and early season stuff. I also have a 32t oval chainring that I'll put on there when I'm back in shape. It's gonna be a while though........

Oh man, I've been fearing that. What are the signs, are there any that it could happen soon? Where were you when it happened? :scared:

For me, no signs whatsoever. I was just playing racquetball. I was sprinting forward to get a ball and it just went when I pushed off that back foot. It was a classic audible pop and felt like somebody hit me with a lead pipe.

Surgeon said there's really no way to know when they're gonna go. Overuse/overtraining can contribute. If you have an active tendinitis it can weaken the tendon. If you have gone thru a period of inactivity then jump right into athletics without easing back into it can be an issue.

Again, for me I have been working out all winter (racquetball twice a week). I don't think I had been overdoing it and I wasn't having any tendinitis symptoms. So, how's that for a vague answer?!?

Hey Steve,

I've had no problem switching between chainrings that are only 2 teeth different in size. The oval experiment will be an interesting one. Supposedly, the 32t oval ring only has the same length of chain engagement as a round 30t ring. So, theoretically, I won't have an issue. I've never tried it though.

Good to know. I'm guessing you've noticed a big difference in climbing with the 28 vs. 32?

Yes. Honestly, the 28 has been really nice. I'm a fast cadence, spinner, so I like to have the lower gear. I especially like having the SRAM setup with the 10t cassette cog. That one tooth (vs. the 11t Shimano) actually makes a pretty big difference on the top end speed.

Most of the time when I am spun out, I don't necessarily want to go any faster anyway. I'm not doing any pavement commuting on this bike, so the top end range hasn't been too much of an issue.

tallsteve
04-26-2016, 10:50 AM
Cool. Good to know. I'm a total noob with this 1x11 thang. I'm more of a masher so, I'm hoping the 30 will work well for me. With that being said, I'm also getting old so, we'll see. I also don't use this bike for pavement riding since I bought a road bike last year. I'm happy to hear you haven't needed to swap chains out with the ring swap.

So why the renewed interest in oval chain rings among MTB rider's? We went through this once before in the 80's when oval chain rings were all the rage and after a couple years everyone was back to standard.

So why the renewed interest in oval chain rings among MTB rider's? We went through this once before in the 80's when oval chain rings were all the rage and after a couple years everyone was back to standard.

It's definitely an experiment for me. The new crop of oval rings, however, are a completely different beast from the original BioPace rings from the yesteryear. Supposedly the old ones were clocked 90 degrees differently than the newer versions. Basically, the incorrect clocking rendered all their claims incorrect. My buddy has one on the new ones and really likes it, so I figured I'd give it a shot as I needed a new ring anyway.

The basic premise is you are pushing two different chainrings throughout your pedal stroke. In the "power zone" (or whatever their terminology is) you are pushing the 32t (in my example) and in the "Dead Zone" you are pushing a 30t.
Once I get some time on it, I'll report back.

Thoughts after a short, quick ride in Lambert Park yesterday afternoon. I loved it! Don't know if it's all psychological but, the bike just felt spry and better balanced. Hard to explain. I loved the simplicity. I loved the no chain slap due to the Shadow clutch derailleur although the shifting itself was much noisier than my old Sram with a fairly loud 'clunk'. Especially when going up to the bigger cogs. The 30T front chainring felt about right on the really steep, albeit short, climbs on Spring and Middle getting up to the top of Rodeo. I only had to drop into the 42 cog on the steepest of stuff and I went up it just fine. We'll see how I do on the 4 mile climbs up AF Canyon this summer though before I make final judgement.

After a long wait due to short supply my YT Capra is here.

Found myself no longer pushing my DH bike anywhere near its potential so I wanted a long travel all mountain bike instead. Hoping to get out for a quick test ride Saturday.

Carbon hardtail that I built up over the summer - XT drive train and brakes, DT Swiss hubs and rims, Reverb dropper post, RaceFace cranks, Maxxis tires, WTB Seat, Fatty Stripper tubless, etc... Just under 28 lbs. (tire selection and dropper added 2 lbs... could have finished under 26!)

Nice! Gotta love a lite-weight fatbike! I got my Farley down to 27lbs- which ain't too bad for an XL size with dropper post.

Pedaling to the summit of the Alpine Loop yesterday afternoon was the best it's been so far this season. The road had been groomed earlier in the morning so I was pedaling on firm corduroy for much of the ascent. Beautiful blue, smog-free skies with the temp at the summit at a balmy 44 degrees. Going again this afternoon if anyone wants in (although I'll probably pedal up the Mineral Basin road instead).

With the availability of XXL size bikes running thin, I thought I'd better grab something before they quit making them completely. So, I bought a 2017 Trek Procaliber frame and moved everything over from my Supefly that I could. The only thing I ended up having to buy was a new rear wheel as this frame has the newer Boost 148 width on it. Oh, I did buy a dropper post for it as well. After running a dropper on my fatbike all winter long, I can't ride without one now. I'm spoiled I guess. Anyway, I took it out and pedaled the Eagle Mountain trails yesterday. These trails were a good testing ground for a 1st ride what with all the embedded rock out there. The biggest thing I noticed was how soft of a ride the carbon frame feels compared to the harshness of my aluminum Superfly. That, along with the IsoSpeed decoupler, made for a really comfortable ride. My lower back felt pretty good after 17 miles, which I haven't been able to say for quite some time now.

Probably! Honestly, I've liked my hardtail over the past few years. I don't care about going downhill really fast anymore. With that being said, I would have bought a lower travel, lighter-weight, full-squish a couple of weeks ago if any were available. Trek has dropped the XXL (23") size frame choices from all of their higher-end bikes, though. The XXL size Procaliber frame-set was available so, I jumped on it before they decide not to offer it anymore either. The Procaliber is kind of a soft-tail and I've noticed it does take the sting out of the trail. Good enough for now.

This is true. It's a total fad, and will go out of style again. It also fades in the sunshine, so in a couple of years, the top of the levers is really light purple, and the underside is still nice and bright. I don't like too much of it, but a little bit looks good to me. Although, I preferred some of the other colors to purple. I remember my brother had one of those Paul Components rear derailleurs that was all machined aluminum and had the "rasta" anodizing treatment. It looked cool as heck, but that thing was a pain in the butt to get it to shift well. There is a reason Shimano and SRAM are the bosses in the drivetrain world.

That's a nice bike, I just checked it out. No weight for the bike given on the website, though.

My trail bike is an alloy Superfly. It's nicely equipped but weights 28.5 lbs. I've been thinking of a new one, perhaps a Yeti SB100.

This bike however, is a contender. Do me a favor and post up the weight of that thing when you get the chance...I'm looking for 24 max.

Iceaxe

The frame is 2000 grams (4.4 pounds). I'll have to weigh my bike, but I can tell you it's really lightweight. I don't think they can really post a weight as every bike is custom built. Even things like handlebar width is based on your measurements or request.

27.9 pounds is the actual ready to ride bike weight and the weight I rode the bike at today.

This is not the bullshit advertised dry weight that most manufacturers use with no sealant in the tires or oil in brakelines, no pedals, and with no dropper installed, yada, yada....

The funny thing is my old Salsa had an advertised weight of 27.8 pounds and this bike is noticeably much lighter. Soon as I lifted the new bike into the truck I knew it was a lot lighter.

Some guys I know don't care for super light bikes. A buddy of mine has a Specialized that's about 4 years old that weighs in at 24. I rode it for a few hours and just love it. It's hella expensive to get a bike like that, though.

Yeah, used Signal Peaks are pretty rare right now as they have only been available for about 9 months. The bike also comes with a 30 day money back guarantee so just about anyone riding one is pretty happy with it.

And guys who don't like light bikes are obviously not XC races where weight is so important.

I did put a dropped on this bike, which I would swap out to save weight if I was doing some serious racing.

That’ll give you a chance to still get PR’s. I may jump to a 29er at some point. Then I can shatter some of my old records. At least climbing records. I would assume the 27.5’s are a little faster downhill? Maybe just turning and not necessarily the whole run. However, maybe the faster uphill and slower down averages out the same. I would think the 29er is faster everywhere though. Thoughts?

I'm quite happy with the dropper on my enduro bike, but I hardly use the one on my trail bike. I ride them about 50/50. I won't bother getting one on my next trail bike.

I think my 29er is certainly faster that my 27.5 enduro. Two very different bikes, though.

As a general rule the 29ers are faster everywhere, except if the downhill starts getting tight and technical. Also some has to do with the tire the bike was truly designed for, and not the tire you can also run.

After years of riding with the HS MTB Teams I've found that faster up and slower down is a much better formula then slower up and faster down and the math proves it out.

Say I'm 1 second a minute faster climbing then you and your 1 second a minute faster at descending. Let's say we take a hypothetical lap of Corner Canyon for example. It takes roughly 30 minutes to climb from the bottom of Rush to the top and 10 minutes to descend. So after one lap I gain 30 seconds on the climb but you can only take back 10 seconds on the descent so at the end of one lap I have a 20 second lead. As you know in bike racing gaining 20 seconds a lap is a huge lead.

I think watching races like the Tour de France also proves this out as the mountain stage races are generally won and lost on the climb and seldom the DH.

Ya see... this is exactly the type of stuff I think about on long hard climbs which is why I have such a great answer for you... LOL....

Gotcha. I’ve thought about that often. Also, if I even need rear suspension at all when I ride corner canyon so often. Perhaps a hard tail 29er would be even faster. Some are going back to the hard tail. Which is interesting and for cross country maybe the ticket. However, I could see missing the rear suspension on bumpy sections. There is never a perfect bike for every scenario. What do you guys think about hardtails?

Iceaxe
12-14-2018, 03:54 AM
For XC racing, particularly in the high school series, I think a hardtail 29 is the hot setup.

I'm old so I appreciate the comfort of a squishy, and the one advantage to being old is you can afford better bikes.

tallsteve
12-14-2018, 07:24 AM
I ride a 29er hardtail. I had it at 23lbs ride weight with pedals and everything. Not bad for an XXL size bike. This past summer I swapped out several of the crazy lite components for a more comfortable riding experience which, honestly, I've enjoyed much more. I put on heavier, beefier tires for better handling and grip on rough trails. I swapped out the carbon racing saddle for one with more cush for my tush. I swapped Eggbeaters for Candy's. Carbon frame, wheels and handlebar still keeps it fairly lite, it's just not where it used to be. The photo is how I have it set up today. The bike rocks on the CC trails. During the summer though, I stay up AF Canyon for the most part and often wish for full suspension. Being older, I'm thinking I'll probably go full suspension in the next year or two.
I'm glad to see Fezzari has upped their game. It's a solid bike now. They also got rid of their awful warranty which, up until 2 years ago, read "The warranty is void if you race OR TRAIN TO RACE".91266

Aren't the bikes these days amazing? I was perusing this thread and looking at everyone's ride from 8,9,10 years ago and those things are like dinosaurs compared to what's being produced these days.

The wider hub spacing, along with the demise of the quick link really set it off.

Sloppy engagement- too much play before the pawls engage. Where I really noticed the sloppy engagement was when climbing a techy trail or pedaling through rock gardens. It really bugged me. So, I just had the rear wheel rebuilt with an i9 hub. Did my first ride on it Saturday. Instant engagement is a huge improvement plus the hub weighs nearly 100 grams less. Win, win!

I now have answers.... My new Fezzari Signal Peak is lapping closed circuits at 6% faster then my 2012 Salsa Spearfish II. The Salsa was considered a very nice XC bike when I bought it new in 2012. If I recall the Salsa retailed new for $3200, which is at least comparing apples to apples with a Signal Peak.

That means what was once a 5:00 minute lap is now a 4:42 lap time.... or what was once a 60:00 minute lap is now 56:24. Those numbers are huge improvements. I could maybe be off 1% either way, but it doesn't matter as those are still incredible improvements.

I have kept a ridiculously detailed log of various lap times, over the past 10 years, that includes both racing and training. My logs take into account conditioning, my weight, track conditions, yada, yada. I'm an engineer by trade which basically means I'm a numbers geek anyways. I've worked as the team engineer on various race car teams over the years so I have a very good handle on lap times, how to calculate them, and how to see where the improvements are. Just thought I'd mention that so you could understand these are just not fanboi wishes.

Anyhoo.... I thought some of you would find that of interest. Take it for what it's worth, but understand I'm extremely happy with my new Signal Peak.

Nice. I've been looking at getting a full suspension frame and moving all my parts over since they are all fairly new. I've looked at the Fezzari. The problem I'm running into is the choices for a short travel, x-country frame in an XXL size is extremely limited. I've pedaled a bunch of XL sizes at different bike shops and they just don't fit. So far it's coming down to the Rocky Mountain Element or the Santa Cruz Tallboy. I like the Tallboy better but, no one has any stock on them until July or August.

Pivot Shuttle... awesome to ride so far. Extra weight is carried low, combined with the 2.8 tires and downhill PRs are falling. Shuttle yourself back to the top and roll it again.

Looks like a nice ride, I can tell you those Maxxis tires are better than the Schwalbes that came on mine. Those are next on my list.

Most of all, you'll love that you don't need an Ibuprofen 800mg when you get home from a ride, and when you wake up the next morning. Ebikes let us ride longer and more often.

but WHY???Haha, good point! I'd say it's to show all the ebike hater's that it really is just a bike, but I don't get caught up in all that and I just try to respectfully ride and share the trails with everyone.

But the real reason is when riding with my young kids it really pointless to use the battery.

That's a very nice bike, Rich. Looks like a 140 up front? You guys got anything rough enough for that fork in flat 'ole Florida? When I was a kid, I lived in Pensacola and near Jacksonville for a while...did a lot of camping but don't remember too many hills. Was stationed near Key West back in '83 when I did a stint in the Navy.

Iv'e got three bikes. A '92 KHS "Monatana" from back in the day. This '14 Trek Superfly and a '15 Yeti SB6 for the rough stuff. I just love this Trek...it's an absolutely fantastic trail bike. 100mm up front but I actually bomb down Capt. Ahab in Moab on this thing. It's an aluminum bike, kinda heavy (29lbs) but I hardly notice the weight.

I'm all jacked up to upgrade to a Yeti SB100. It's a 25-26lb carbon bike with a 120 up front. I might get hurt on that damn thing but I want it anyway. I want to demo one before I buy (they're expensive) $5500 new and around $4000 used...but no one has them in the demo fleets right now. Not even in Moab. Everybody buys bikes with 130, 140 or 160s up front. I like to ride fast and move quickly uphill and these less squishy bikes do that wonderfully. A 140 is probably a great "one quiver" bike but when you can afford two, a squishy and a not so squishy is the way to go, IMO.

If you ever make your way to Utah, hit me up. I'm familiar with damn near everything south of I-70. I'm a really good rider but not one of those psycho's that'll get you hurt riding with.

We have some nice bike parks with some excellent features that the long travel really helps with (Alafia, Santos), but my wife and I ride all over. We have ridden Sedona, Red Canyon Utah, Moab, and North Carolina. I like to have a bike that I can take anywhere and works on any trail.
I built up a KHS back in the day and still have it. It’s an awesome bike. Bulletproof.
We definitely love riding in Utah; night have to hit you up on our next road trip. Been eyeing some stuff near St. George I think it is.

St. George is very similar to Moab...the only thing lacking there is an epic like Porcupine Rim. There is tons of excellent riding around that town...Gooseberry Mesa (and a couple other mesa's adjacent to it) are probably most famous. The town is close by with everything you need without the heavy traffic of Moab. Most people rate St. George "below" Moab, but personally I'd say they're on equal footing...with Dixie only missing that big 25+ mile downhill run.

I actually "bugged out" up on Gooseberry for three weeks in April. Camped and rode my bike everyday. It was awesome...only one night of rain the whole time and sparse crowds...although it did get busy on the weekends. One guy got himself killed when he rode his bike off the edge of a cliff...I probably waved at him as he rode by my camp. Within an hour he was dead. Kinda creepy. I think that one is detailed in the "Broke outta quarantine" thread.

Indeed, contact me if you head that direction...I know all the best rides.

Thank you. So far it’s very nice. It took me a while to get it tuned in properly for my riding style, but I think I’ve finally got it right. Might experiment with some spacers, but I’m going to give it a run up in North Carolina next week and see how it does.

New bikes day - woohoo. After riding on our current set of bikes for about 6-7 years, the wife and I agreed it was time to upgrade and get new bikes for our anniversary last week. So, we headed out bike shopping a color weekend ago. Going into several shops in N SL Co, Davis Co, and Webber Co, it became very obvious that bike selection was at a bare minimum, especially if you were looking to spend <$6k on a new set of wheels. All the dealers said that bike manufacturers are having severe supply chain issues in building their bikes due to the scamdemic. And with the demand explosion as well, bikes and bike parts are very scarce and don’t look to get better anytime soon. Several said they will likely be all out of bikes for the year by June.

Anyway, I picked up this sweet Pivot Trail 429. Took it out for its virgin voyage last Friday to Eagle Mtn. Fun times.

Yeah, that's a nice bike....a buddy of mine has one. I'm looking to upgrade my trail bike as well. It's a 2014 Trek Superfly and I absolutely love it, but I've got a hard on for the Yeti SB100 or 115. I've been waiting for one to pop up on Craigslist but they're far and few between...there were several to choose from before the Great Hoax but I didn't pull the trigger. Funny thing about that...you would think people would be dumping pricey bikes in need of the cash, but in fact they're holding on to them. A few have appeared and they're asking damn near full retail! The retail price, even with 20% off or negotiating that is way too high.

Being a bit more patient will save me at least a thousand bucks.

Yeah, I think that's the general norm today with anything outdoor gear (RV's, watersports, biking, hiking, camping gear, etc.). (Nearly) Nobody is traveling internationally, going on cruises, etc., and so they're all spending their money and time on outdoors toys, and hitting the local outdoor playgrounds. Because of the high demand, and scarce availability of new product in stores, used equipment prices are near/at new prices.

Ah, that's interesting! I didn't consider that the travel restrictions are behind it...in fact I hadn't consider that at all. Guess I wasn't thinking too deeply.

I wonder how much used gear will show up once the face diapers go away? Kinda like how exercise machines people put in their houses quickly turn into dust traps and laundry hangers.
