This is Sophie.

She's a classic 2003 GT Zaskar frame built up with a Rockshox Duke XC, a mix of Shimano XT and XTR, Avid Arch Rival front / SD 7 rear brake, Speed Dial SL levers, Race Face Turbine Crank, and a Race Face Carbon seatpost and handlebar. I also have two hand built wheelsets for her, one XTR/Mavic X517 with DT Revos and one LX/Mavix X717 with DT Comps for everyday use.

Also included is a picture of him in his happiest state. Muddy! Taken after an attempt to ride Posion Spider in a down pour. The bastard Salsa is right next to him.

Yeah, I've got to build a new one myself. The old one won't fit the new truck. I'm thinking about building and additional one for the tailgate just make it a little more solid of a ride for the bikes.

Grey hair, looks like you should look into a frame with a lifetime warranty, broke my frame two years ago after having the bike for 4 and in two weeks I had a bran new frame and built bike for free. Right now I am looking for a new bike and traying to decide vs the Superfly 100 or the tallboy, only problem with the tallboy is the two year frame warranty, that will probably be my deciding factor for the superfly to end up rolling the big wheels into my garage! I hope Salsa takes care of you!

greyhair biker
10-22-2010, 07:31 PM

Maybe we should head south for some warmer weather riding. I am itching to go for a ride also. New rear shock, grips and lockons, and a new raceface middle ring, chainring bolts, and a chain. My middle ring had 2 cracks in it and the holes were ovaled. I told the guy at the shop that I never use the small ring and that I prefer to just grind the middle ring. I will most likely do the same to this new ring. The new bikes have a 10 gear cassette and 2 rings up front. I wouldn't mind trying this new gear configuration.

Actually the tires are some I've used for a year and decided I just had to have Maxxis Mobsters. I used 1/2" screws. Drilled through the back side and screwed them in with another gun. Front tire is a 2.3 Tioga - rear is a 2.4 Panaracer FireXC Pro. I taped over the screwheads with duct tape and then used Mr. Tuffy liners and the bigger/thicker tubes. Had to grind the rear screws down a little to keep them from dragging the new frame. $ for a box o screws -$7. Did both tires with one box. BUT, one better be prepared to ride snowpack and ice...loose snow is no problem but deep snow is - it's a bit testy on sidewalk/road.

Maintenance has been neglected for a couple of years so today the old girl got some new stuff:2thumbs:
Code 5 brake set front and back to replace the mismatched stuff that didn't work most of last year.
New shift cables
New middle chain ring that was missing teeth.
New bottom bracket replacing the creaky one.
New front hub bearings and lubed rear hub bearings.
New seatpost clamp to replace the one I broke two years ago
cleaned lubed headset
Rebuilt front fork again
Trued rims, unbelievable they held up as loose as they were
New ODI grips
New WTB Speed V saddle
etc...

Here is mine. My new white Specialized 29er hardrock. Beginner level but hey WTH. Now it has a few new scratches on it.

So far since getting it on the 17th of January, I've ridden it to work about 3 times a week (about 18 times total=144miles). Our typical route involves about 4 miles each way and about 1.5 miles each way is on a mtn bike trail that runs along the bottom of the wash. Nice. The rest is on paved trail. We all have to start somewhere. Having fun with it.

Yeah, I still have the red Spcialized for down hill riding, but I guess i really didn't think my name through all that well..... :crazycobasa: I guess I could change the name to "brownfocus" or "BROWNprojectman"....:ne_nau:

As for the Tire's, I really like the Fat Albert's. who couldn't love a time with a name like that. I don't have a ton of riding on the yet but they seem to stick well and roll pretty good. I have heard they are a pricey tire but they came with the bike. I'm sure there are other tires out there less expensive and probably just as good, but I'm not sure. I haven't purchased tires in about 2 yrs. and that was for my DH ride so they were thick wall Kenda's. Now that i think about it I Don't think I have ever purchased a lighter weight tire.

Well I can tell you that I don't regret switching to the 29er. I made a big switch coming from a 6 inch travel 26er to the Jet with only 4 front and 3 rear wheel travel, but I've really only had a few times that I wanted a little more travel. The biggest difference to me is on technical climbs that were either impossible or nearly so I can ride up them almost easily on my Jet. The cornering is good even with some superwide bars on it but my front tire is a Geax Barro and I'm not too pleased with it in the loose stuff around on the shoreline trail. I have the exact same brakes off my old bike and you can tell it takes a little more to stop those big wheels once they get rolling but that's one of the benefits to them also, momentum. The Jet (and most 29ers I hear) really seems to love to be in the middle ring and I occasionally wish they made a 30 tooth middle ring (I'm working on getting my friend to make me one on his CNC mill) so that the small ring would jsut be a bailout gear for when you're completely spent and hallucinating. I've taken it on one trip to Park City and did a 38 miler on the Mid Mountain trail and it really excelled in that terrain alot with all of the imbedded rock gardens and rolling forested trails, it was at least as fast or faster than my El Guapo was up there with a 9.3 MPH average. I do have to lock out the Reba fork on any even medium sized climbs or it bobs way too much for my taste even way more than I remember my Fox Talas 36 doing. Traction is the biggest positive about the bigger wheels it does off cambers better, climbs rocky ledges and roots way better than a 26er. I only rode one other 9er and that was a Gary Fisher Hi Fi Pro but it was enough to convince me to come over to the dark side. The Jet seems to downhill better than the GF did but I did have to ride it a little differently (than my old bike) because of the lack of suspension travel, I can't just blast through things like I could.

Ditto on all of the above. I have been riding, walking, some pedaling on a downhill bike for the past 11 years. For the longest time I have said, " weight = strength = stability and control. " I have been suprised as of lately how much better the all mountain and some cross country bikes see to handle. My problem is that I like to utilize the benefits of a downhill bike, therefore I prefer challeging rugged obstacle type trails. If I were to scale back a little and get an all mountain bike, I would have to become a better rider instead of being lazy and just hanging onto the bars.

It seems like most people are either roadies or mountain bikers, I guess I'm one of the few that I know that do a little of both. It's the best of both worlds I think being able to pedal out of the garage and get a quick 20 or 30 miler in after work or if I have more time hitting the trails for a 10-12 miler. Keeps me from getting burned out too.

You can count me in that group now. I still prefer my mtn bike over my road bike but riding the road bike has improved my mtn biking. I start a HIT spin class on a trainer here in a couple weeks. So I already sold the DH bike, and will be selling the Fuel too. Together they should sell for about $400 less than this one cost me. So it's really just a $400 upgrade to a great bike.

Thanks accadacca. I'm excited to get out and ride it Saturday.

Nice bike Kent ! I have heard good things about the remedy. I saw a biker hit some jumps on a park city trail last year with that same wheel set. I thought to myself those must be stronger than they look. Very trick wheel set and durable.

Thanks guys. I love the Remedy since it allows me to ride the ups and downs on XC trails and still hit the average AM/DH run as well. I read a lot of reviews praising the strength of these wheels before pulling the trigger too.

Just got a Cannondale Jekyll Carbon fiber. Rims are a little more bling than I'm used to, but I'll deal with it. Just hope I don't blind my riding buddies with the sparkle action. :lol8:

Only ridden it once, but loving the new shock system with the push and pull action, very neat. Also has 30 gears which I didn't think I'd notice but I really do. Trip out....

I own a few custom build bikes. I usually find them for cheap in the classifieds or a pawnshop, strip them down to nothing, then start from there, and build them for my riding style.

This is a 2008 Trance XO that I use, mainly on summit bids or the summits themselves.

Ben Lomond summit, looking down at Willard Bay.

At point 10,421, looking south at Superior and Monte Cristo, via Mineral Fork, and the Cardiac Ridge.

71776

This bike is a custom built Specialized Rockhopper, originally destined for a dumpster. A $70 dollar local pawn shop beaten to hell frame set.

Original purchase pic:

71783

Stripped the frame down, powder coated and built up, it makes an excellent climbing bike. Brother in law Ryan at the left, me, right. On Tri-County Peak, or Guardsman Peak after a fun climb from Park City.

71777

This is the same bike at the top of Little Mountain, after a brisk but fun climb. Interstate 80 seen in the distance.

71778

This bike is another custom built hard tail, frame set originally found from a pawnshop. Interestingly it is one of the best and lightest climbing bikes I have so far. A Specialized Hardrock Sport. Pretty much the only original component on the bike is the frame itself. This shot is of me and the bike at the top of View Benchmark, highpoint of the Traverse Range above Suncrest. Route I use starts at the Orson Smith TH in Draper.

71779

71780

This next bike is old skuhl... a 1994 Trek 820 chromoly with loads of miles on it. I bought this bike new in Seattle, 1994. I got bored a couple winters back and decided to restore it, adding a bit of bling. It is now more or less permanently mounted to a Fluid 2 trainer for use during these cold and dark winter months, in the depths of the basement...

This is that bike overlooking Buckhorn Wash in the Swell back in 1996...

71781

After the rest... the frame was chromed, disc brakes installed, an 8 speed drivetrain installed and mounted to the trainer. This shot shows the dungeon room in the basement with the trainer, basic video/stereo system installed with my oldest daughter and other kids...

71782

I like to build bikes.

I recently bought this to replace my 13 year old hardtail. It's a Superfly 9, 100mm, all XT. 27.5 lbs on the bike shop scale.

I rode about a dozen different trail bikes in the last two months and this was the winner, hands down. This will handle a majority of my rides...before next spring I'll buy a new squishy for the really rough stuff... probably a Santa Cruz or a Yeti.

Not a new bike but, just bought a new wheelset for my Trek Superfly hardtail. I've been drooling over these at the shop for the past year and finally pulled the trigger. It came down to these or the Stans Crest which I could have bought for $80 less with my shop employee discount. They are both nearly the same weight at 1580 grams per set. I chose the Bonti's over the Stan's because the Bonti's have a DT Swiss star ratchet drive hub, aero blade spokes and no rider weight limit. The Stan's use a Stan's hub (online reviews of this hub aren't the best) and have a rider weight limit, which I'd be pushing. We sell the Bontrager's at the shop for $1,000 and I paid much less than that. This wheelset is nearly a pound and a half lighter than my old wheels! Crazy! And, it's rotational weight. Mounted them up tubeless without a hitch. So, my bike now comes in at just over 24lbs (with pedals and saddle). Not too bad for an aluminum bike in an XXL size and I'm not riding stupid lite tires. Did my first ride on them last night. I thought I'd feel the difference on the climbs and they did feel a bit faster but not as much as I thought they would. Where I noticed the difference was on the flats and downhill. These things roll crazy fast! I don't know if it's the aero bladed spokes or just new hubs but, man oh man, crazy fast! I also noticed they are much stiffer than my old set and seem more nimble. Anyway, I had my fastest time of the season on my 12 mile lariat loop up AF Canyon. Excited to put some more miles on them!76006

My ancient (mid 80s?) Schwinn High Sierra that I bought used for 80 bucks. I rebuilt it with a few upgraded components but it's mostly old school all the way. It isn't pretty or sexy but it's a durable workhorse as demonstrated on a recent Seattle to Halifax solo tour... My first bicycle tour.

Just mounted up my Bontrager XXX carbon (shell & rails) saddle and took it for its first test ride. This is Trek's $250 top of the line, most expensive saddle they offer, which I got for FREE (almost makes it worth working at the shop a couple hours a week!)! The saddle, added to an existing Thomsen Masterpiece seatpost, brings my mtn. bike down to just over 23 lbs. The ride was much better than I anticipated it would be. Without much padding I thought the ride would be harsh but, since the carbon is pretty flexy, it really wasn't bad.
