You can take Kristen off the wait list for Spry on Saturday b/c she will be doing Subway with my group. Also so Kristen and I can do a canyon together, can you please change our Sunday canyon to Pinecreek and Keyhole. We may just do one canyon and then head out since we have a long drive home. Thanks!! :2thumbs:

It must just be me all confused then. :haha: Thanks Tom!

Everyone that wanted has been added to Boundary (I hope)
..and the other canyons that were requested.

We are still sort of confused on the Subway and Das Boot trip so everyone please get with Randi and unconfuse this one!

Help Tanya!!!!

Please add my daughter Sarah to Sunday Mystery since there is one spot open now that Alison isn't going.

Please put her with Tom Jones for Friday's trip (there is room on Tom's Spry trip and he would she knows him already). I will be in Imlay on Friday!

I hope there wil lbe a spot for her on Subway!!!!!!
If not, I will figure something out!

I think I have everyone where I need them. Randi get with Bo about taking your daughter with you. There might be a way as long as there are enough permits.

I am thinking we should get at least one more Saturday trip going since that is the busiest day... just in case more sign up to go?

Randi, I'm still waiting to hear from our scheduling lady but I'm guessing I will be out and your daughter can take my permit. I'll let you know "officially" when I hear if my schedule is changing or not.

Sarah can't come after all! :(
She works weekends at a Country Club, and they've told her that June will be too busy of a month (mostly GOLF tournament traffic!) and she won't be allowed to take any time off at all in June! :(

I'm bummed!
Tom now has another "open" place on his Spry permit.

Bikers
I heard a few bikers want to do some dirt trails on Friday during the fest. Should we start a sign up for that here?

Saturday Canyons
Is anyone else interested in doing a canyon on Saturday? Do we need to get another trip going or is everyone that wants to sign up on the list?

Seems like canyon plans are coming together pretty well. Do we have a solid plan for dinner together? It's been mentioned before that the group is too big for a resturant.
But I'm thinking people won't want to do pot luck both nights. What if we do pot luck one night and restuant luck the other? By resturant luck I mean we pick a general time to meet at the Pizza Noodle (because they have informal seating) and then just try to get our smaller groups as close together as possible?
I'm thinking resturant luck for Friday night and Pot Luck for Saturday. Objections? Concerns?

Now, what about camping? I'll have a group of 6 and we will be camping. I'd like to go someplace big enough and close enough to host anyone interested in camping with us and host the pot luck. While I have camped at Mosquitoe Cove in the past I don't want to plan for that and lose the site to better closeure enforcement. What about Gooseberry Mesa? There's a lot of open land up there and who knows maybe camping up there will entice some Bogley Bikers to come down and camp with us too...
Again, Objections? Concerns?

This would be cool, but make it Friday night. Lets do Pot Luck Saturday night.
For potluck; I'll bring a grill (could use a couple more too) then everyone bring your own meat and some side dish to share.

I was under the impression that mosqito cove is closed but not really enforced. I'd hate to have 50+ people out there cooking and drinking when they decide to enforce the closure. We need to just plan for something else and unless someone has a better suggestion I'm thinking Gooseberry looks pretty good.

Well, add me to the list of people coming. I am brining my bike and plan on riding Gooseberry with out kids. Yahoo a weekend away from kiddo's. :cool2:

So Alison's friend Kirsten is not coming. If I may I would like to take her spot on Subway. I am completely new to this but will do my best to study up and find someone to show me how to rappel and what not. It is the only canyon I am really interested in doing. If I can't that is cool, I am sure I can entertain myself on my bike. :ride:

Might be worth mentioning this in the bike section; maybe you could get a couple more Bogley riders to come ride with you...

And the offer stands; we climb weekly in AF and could go over some basics and safely teach you how to rappel.

No if you look at the first post in this thread it has all the trips (full and open) and is updated daily. Pine/Keyhole has always been on Sunday.
You can start a Saturday Pine/Keyhole if you want.

Yes, reviewing the postings to this thread I think both Tanya and I mis-read that back on 4/1. No worries.

Anyone up for leading Pine/Keyhole on Saturday? I'd be willing to switch to some other canyons as well for Saturday. Right now there does not seem to be any open for Saturday. We're "novice", i.e. done several canyons but not ready to lead ourselves.

The Hill (Crybaby Hill) getting up to Gooseberry is VERY ROUGH, as in 2WD forgetaboutit, 4WD high clearance OK but rough. Not a good place for the whole gang to stay.

In my limited time with my trip coming up on Friday I've read a bit on the Zion canyons. I think my clan, Ststephen (aka Paul), Robin and Aaron would probably be OK with Mystery and that sounds like a great slot. The rap over the boulder might be tricky but they are not first-time rappelers.

OTOH, we would also be fine doing any of the easy canyons like Orderville. We plan to be there for full days Sat and Sun. I know 3 people eats up a lot of spaces on a permit so I want to be flexible.

My last checkin here is tomorrow night. Thanks to all the organizers!

Okay... got you covered. I will put your group of 3 with Kurt doing Mystery on Saturday. Ron and I will find something and I will put Hank on the Subway Saturday since he is getting bumped from Mystery.

Chere I will put you on the next opening or you can join one of the groups for sunday trips.

How many are in your group and would you prefer to stay in the Pine Creek/Keyhole or the Mystery Trip? If there are just 2 and maybe 3 of you, then you can have mine and my friends spot on Mystery. Consider signing up for Keyhole on Sunday. I am not sure but I assume they will do that one before Pine Creek. It's the easiest in the park and is done quick so you will have time to drive home after.

Also I am waiting to hear from Acca and Beach as to what day the plan to bike. Their canyons will then be open for that bike day, but that would not work for you since you are biking too, but it will for someone else. Hank would get the first option of canyon choices since I moved him. But since he is my buddy I know he will forgive me.. right Hank .

You'll have to ask the organizers: Bo, Pubalz (Dave) TrackRunner I've never done it and it will be up to them to set the meeting time.

The descriptions also mention cold water and all the photos I've seen show people in wetsuits. But, again I defer to the leaders and locals who know this well.

Hi Bo - other leaders of the Sunday Keyhole Trip...

What about me!?!?!? I might show up Sunday. :lol8:

Your Subway hike is Saturday so I don't think the end time is a concern - as long as they make party time that night. :lol8: It's Sunday trips that many worry about what time they will be done so that they can head home.

If those on your Pine Creek/Keyhole Trip only wanted to Keyhole, what time would they be done about?

Saturday...

Does anyone want to lead Orderville on Saturday maybe. That would open up a Saturday trip to more Newbies, who might then also take advantage of some of the Sunday trips we have going. For those that have never done a canyon at all - they would love doing Orderville, then out the Zion Narrows.

The bikers that are going would love this!

Oops! Sorry for confusion? Anyway....Since Keyhole and Pine Creek in one day is REALLY pushing human limits.....how bout a 2 AM start in Keyhole? Should get er done by daybreak? Keyhole takes a large group 2.56483 Hours or if we travel fast we could be done in 1.387465 hours. Waddya say Blueeyessmiling! Please join us! :2thumbs: Pine Creek can take from 45 min. to 9 hours????? Big group? Estimate 4.9873021121 Hours? Come on along!

Your scientific approach to trip planning and precision of estimation is inspiring. Should I bring my trusty circular slide rule to help us fine tune our ETA? Let's see, total weight of participants, divided by the width of the rope, plus the reciprocal of the mean shoe size times...

Since this is so close I think it's important to remind everyone of the following. If don't have basic skills then we need to set up a practice day. I'm in Salt Lake country so PM me if you need some help.

Important! We are just a bunch of friends meeting to do canyons together, this is not a class or a guided trip! If you lack rappelling skills find someone to take you out to practice before the Bogleyfest. In the slot is not the time to learn to rappel. You need to be able to do the canyons you sign up for with a group. This means you know how to clip in and rappel without help, you do not 'freak-out' on long or awkward rappels, you can at least dog paddle to shore and you do not 'freak-out' when swimming in darkish, cold canyons.

So, I'm down for helping plan and even hosting the Saturday night pot luck but I still don't have a firm camping plan and I doubt we can host a pot luck from out behind the Pizza Noodle where Josh and I spent a night last year.
I was thinking somewhere up on Gooseberry Mesa but someone (Tom maybe?) posted that the road up there isn't the best and may not be for everyone. I don't remember it being that bad when I was up there last fall...
Anyone down there have time to check out the road? Or suggest a better sopt to camp?

Drove it last weekend after hiking with Bo in my off road honda civic. For normal people I'd recomend something higher clearance then a civic. It had some deep ruts and rocks that I was able to ravel around when needed.

I have taken some newbs and some scouts up AF in the past. The best place I have found is the first picnic area after the road forks to tibble fork on the tibble road. If you follow the hiking trail up around the back side of the cliff then you can get up on top and set up a top rope. You can drop of the front face or around the side and its a good 50-60 ft. just my 2 cents...we are planning on heading up in the next week or so to take a few people on a refresher. hope this helps.. :ne_nau:

I still think it's do-able I just don't want people skipping the pot-luck Saturday night because they are afraid of the road.

Jonathan Zambella has kindly offered his back yard in Springdale for Saturday's Potluck dinner.

Details:

Date/Time: Saturday, June 27th. 6:00 PM to 10:15 PM.
Location: End of Juniper Road - this is the dirt road east of the Rio, across from the Shell. JZ's house is down at the end, on the left.
Parking: none. Drive down to drop off heavy stuff, but park in town and walk down Juniper Road.
Bathroom: I think I am renting a porto for the occasion
Cleanup: yup! will be up to us to clean up afterwards
Chairs, Tables, Stoves: while JZ and I have some, best if you bring your own
Drinking: allowed, though I have promised JZ that gunplay will be kept to a minimum
Organization: I leave it to Don to organize the food stuff, I will take care of setting up.

Saturday we have 3 spots on the Das Boot Subway permit and 3 spots on mrbrejcha's Spry permit. I'd like to substitute Bugby for Tsuya on mrbrejcha's Spry permit. Then I would like put all three of our Das Boot Subway permits up for grabs. If you signed up for a canyon -- such as Das Boot, make sure you know that you need to have a wetsuit, socks, etc and what kind!

What about Pine Creek? A few weeks ago there was a TR where some folks froze their buns off because they didn't have wetsuits. Hopefully the water is lower now (and more so in 2 more weeks). Not needed?

My son and wife actually have suits they use for ocean swimming but I don't own one.

Those doing Pine Creek are also doing Keyhole, which almost always needs a wet/dry suit. Last year however a couple of guys (Shane and Hank) --- sort of hung above the canyon and did it without. Pine Creek last year we did not even need one, but usually a wetsuit is needed, yes!

Everyone... if you are not sure, contact your trip organizer.

I'm committed to Das Boot with Randi's group (if there is a group)... Can we play it by ear? If Das Boot is cancelled, is there another canyon we could try?

Actually, there isn't a group for Das Boot anymore.
I was under the impression that Felicia had gotten the permit for Sat., when actually she got it for Sunday. I just looked on-line and there are 6 walk in spots availiable for Sat. so "we" could try for it, but I think I'd rather just go ahead and do Subway with Bo's group.

I've got a long day planned for Friday, and I don't want the stress of trying to rush through Das Boot to catch up with Bo's group so we can all do Subway together. Besides, without a navigator, I would most likely get the group lost anyhow. My navigator bailed early on....

I have no plan for Sunday if anybody wants to make one!

Hey Randi,

My name is Deanpaul. No space. No hyphen. Lowercase p.

Totally understand about Das Boot. I've never done the Subway, so there's no let down. I'm looking forward to it.

Tom

Sounds good. I think chipping in for a portopotty is probably a good idea too. Any idea of the cost?
Couple venue questions: Do they have a grill? How big? Gas or briquette? Is there space for us to set up a second grill? Any space for a campfire? If so should we bring firewood? Any space (not on grass) where we can cook with dutch ovens?

Last two questions are more for everyone who's planning to attend the potluck. First, are we doing this straight pot luck or is this a bring your own meat for the grill and a side dish to share kind of thing? And second who is planning to attend?

Yes I AM and including my wife!!! geeze I got bumped from Das Boot the first time so I get on the subway and now I'm bump from that one.

If we still want to preserve a Das Boot I will jump on it. If not then we will be doing Russel & Subway combo.

Condidtions report from this weeked posted on another canyoneering forum stated Pine has a lot of water. Dought it will all evaporate by then so wetsuits are a must especally with a large group of noobs.

Anyone who is doing a canyon with me:

You need to have rappeling skills before this event, if you do not have these skills, please obtain them prior to this event. The canyons are not the right place to learn how to rappel.
I am not guiding anyone on these trips, I merely see it as an event for people with like minded interest and skills to get together and do some canyons.
If anyone on one of my trips views this as a classroom or a guided trip, please have your name removed from the list.
Having said that I would be glad to share thoughts and ideas once in the canyons. I look forward to seeing different techniques and approaches to solving problems in the canyons. First and foremost, we must be safe.
I think this will be a fun event and hope I don't offend someone but I see these requirements as necessary, so everyone in the canyons has a great time.
I could possibly be available in the Cedar City area a day or 2 before the fest to assist anyone in there rappelling skills.

Hey Shaun, sorry about that. I didn't see your name on the Das Boot list, and when all the other attendee's switched trips - I was alone!

So, I do not have a permit for Das Boot anyhow. There are 6 walk in spots available. If we want to try and get the permit that morning, and we still have interested parites (me, you, Deanpaul?) then I would be game to do it.

We'd have to try and work with Bo's group to facilitate a meet up time so we could continue down Subway with the rest of the group.

I should know this, but I usually get my permits on line.
Can we get a permit on Friday morning for a Saturday canyon?

As long as I have something to do on Saturday, I'm cool.

I've never gotten into the Subway before, so either route is cool. If it's Das Boot, great. My last name is Russell, so the other route is interesting too. I'll go where the group goes.

We'll have a big pot of baked beans, dutch oven cheesy potatoes, chips and dip. Plus we're bringing down a big grill and plenty of briquettes so plan on that being available for everyone to cook meat on.

Tom - Spry - Friday - Meet at the Pine Creek Bridge (lower bridge) at 8 am. I have to get the permit, so I might be a bit late. No wetsuits or other stuff, bring tiblocs if you have them and plenty of slings and biners, helmet required, figure out the car spotting while you are waiting for me (and we'll park mine up at the top). I'll bring the ropes.

Tom - Engelstead - Saturday - Meet me at the Mean Bean Cafe at 7:45 am READY TO GO (ie, get there earlier if you need anything). We will figure out car spotting and then head out real soon.

Tom - Birch Hollow - Sunday - Without further communication, we will meet at the turn for the North Fork Road at 8 am. This means leaving Springdale at 7:30 AM. We can try to carpool from Springdale by meeting at the potluck dinner.

I've been thinking full wetsuit based on the reports that some canyons still had snow, but maybe a shorty would be fine for Subway/Echo?

The post that described a bit about friday night dinner and saturday night potluck seems to have evaded me? Anyhow....Maria and I plan to bring a large bowl of Taboule (sort of a bulgar wheat salad) to the potluck. I'm not too sure where this takes place? Did I just lose the post that described the evening events? I think we were meeting at the Whiptail for dinner on friday night? Where is the Whiptail? What time were the meeting times? Thanks.

I'm not clear on Friday night either. First the Bit and Spur was proposed for 7 but then I think Tom was looking into Whiptail as an alternative? I'm not sure if it is settled yet.

My Saturday proposed Mystery trip will be meeting at the VC at 8:00am.
We will be leaving very close to this time. Dropping one car off at the Junction, then all in 1-car to the East side trailhead.

My Sunday trip will be meeting at the Southbound, Leeds exit(I-15) at 8:00am

Helmets required for both days. You must have a safety tether for Mystery,(on your harness) and rappel device of choice.
I have a 125' rope for Mystery, if someone else has one in this range it would be helpful.
I will bring a 200' rope for Sunday's Hidden Star, If someone has another in this range it would be great.

I will be in a red dodge pick-up.

Thanks, looking forward to some fun trips.
Kurt

Some places in SLC you can rent a wetsuit cheaper for a week than you can in sprindale for a day. Is a wetusit needed for the Subway it depends on air temps, if you are warm or cold blooded person (get cold quickly), if you have quick drying cloths and a dry fleece if needed, etc, etc. So YMMV. But I think you'll be fine with a shorty, or even without, but again it depends on you.

Reports are Echo still has snow and is still closed. If it opens soon a wetsuit will be needed and by the sounds of it the fuller the wetsuit the better.

I've got a permit for Keyhole Thursday, we're planning on starting late and doing most of the canyon in the dark, maybe even turn around and do it again backwards. I've got 3 open slots on the permit if anyone is interested. The canyon is wet and probably very cold this time of year so must have a dry-suite or acceptable wet-suite for the conditions.

PM me if interested.

"Pine Creek Bridge" is the bridge at the very bottom of the hill, at the same altitude as the Main Zion Canyon, that the road crossed before switchbacking up the hill.

The East End of the Tunnel (and the bridge there) are known as "Tunnel East".

Pretty sure it's legal to bring in a personal consumption amount. Probably a limit to that or it could just be a rumor I heard. Anyway, just put it in the trunk and don't give anyone a reason to look there. No big deal, and no exaggeration; all 28 alcoholics in Utah have done it once or twice and half the mormons come in carrying illegal fireworks...

Probably one of the hardest calls to make in Zion this year is, what will the weather do.
Lot's of things to ponder in the decision making process. How fast is my group, what is the expected time we will be exposed to FF danger, What kind of escape routes does the canyon offer, do I and all in my group have bivy gear, etc.
I have witnessed Thunderstorms so far on a 0% chance of rain, as well as no precip. and clearing on 40%-70%
The only ones who can make the final decision are you and those in your group, on the particular day. And even then---there are no guarantee's.

NWS forecast is "mostly sunny" for Sat and Sun. Tonight the "forecast" is scattered t-storms. Yeah, no kidding, I'm looking at them whip around right now!

Keeping fingers crossed for the weekend...

We will be in a silver, 4 door toyota pick-up tomorow at the VC, rather than a red Dodge pick-up.

So.... We had some adventure last night. This trip ran into an incident in Englestead that resulted in a Kane County SAR. We await the details. Worst of all they missed dinner at the WhipTail! Put that place on the good ones to hit in Springdale. Poor Chere was pacing at the campsite worried about these guys, but Bo came to the rescue to get her some info. All this lasted late and that 5:30 AM start for the Subway meeting came early! I am glad I did not have a spot and got to sleep in -- although I did have a message waiting for me at 9am when I finally woke up from Trackrunner -- there was probably an opening that morning, but I happily slept through it. :lol8:

We want the story guys!

Tom's group was a bit late to dinner, but they did make it --- some of them a bit wet though! It was good to put faces with the names and ID's! :2thumbs:
