where: Sand Flats Rec Area...mainly because it is close to town & it's 'fairly cheap', there are lots of campsites with firepits & BBQs. Con: pit toilets, no showers, BYOwater. :ne_nau:
OR for a few dollars more we can 'camp' in town at an RV park with cabins and showers, and they're right in town.

swimming: Millcreek runs right through town & a great swimmin hole area (see Acca's pic of peeing on the rainbow) next to the entrance to the canyon Millcreek runs out of.

I know I'm not the only one who has a trailer or camper/rv. I'd be willing to haul it down there & set up a base camp.
.........just a few suggestions.

Hiking: too many places to mention in one reply!

Sounds like a good start! I do like Sand Flats, especially towards the back in the more primitive area. But with what could be a larger group that would be kind of inconvenient. Or maybe we all just find our own camping and one person could set a home base that we could all meet at for dinner/beer/diet cokes/mountain dews.

I'd say beginning of May probably isn't as hot? Anyone else have dates that do or don't work for them?

I just don't have anyone to leave them with for a long period of time. So if I am going to be able to make it then they would be coming too.

My next trip is the Moab Skinny Tire Festival next month. It'll be a good chance to shake out the winter cobwebs. I only have time for bc skiing once per weekend, hate to train indoors, and we're currently in the single digit mornings, then red air days, then snow on the roads, then repeat rut.

After skinny tire, I'll start planning the next adventure. I could probably do Bogley Moab at the end of May. I'd love to get a jump on noobfest 09 as I've done little more than technical scrambling and a few short rappels. You know, stuff like the Subway in Zion.

Beyond that, I've got time for one more short trip and one more long one. I'm currently thinking of joining an Adventure Cycling Association group for a week long supported mountain bike tour through the Wind Rivers but I'm up for anything and won't start planning either until after the one before.

That was up by Sovereign. Sand Flats is the one past Slickrock, I believe on the way out to porcupine rim. May be a little crowded come to think of it. Maybe somewhere past amassa back trailhead?

At the bottom of Hunter Canyon on Kane Creek Road there's a small set of about 4 campsites. No water, pit toilets, no GPS reception let alone cell phone reception and the largest campsite on the east side of the road is good for a group of a dozen or more around the fire. The others are limited to one large or two small to midsize tents each. I'm totally set up for car camping in location like this one and could bring a partial cord of firewood. There's also a couple of other similarly sized campsites up/down the road if a few want to keep their distance from the more raucous bogleyites.

I would say if doing something like this where a bunch of people are trying to meet out in the middle of nowhere that have never been there before GPS reception is an absolute must. Otherwise people are going to be lost and annoyed, and it will either be a bad start to the trip or ruin it all together.

Getting lost would be half the fun of finding the place. How on earth did people ever function with out GPS.

I am good for car camping! I have all my own stuff and am dying to go camping, I even have a cord of wood already.

The temps in the end of may can be pretty toasty. First part of May is usually about perfect for weather in moab.
Camping down in kane creek the end of May would be cooler then sands flats, but sand flats has it advantages you can be on the asphalt and off to where ever you want to go quick. It's a short jaunt out to kane creek. You have to pay to stay at sand flats. On a side note I think the aca is planning a roundy the end of may or first part of june in moab. I would lean to the first part of May if you can make that work.

If you have that much trouble finding the bottom of Hunter Canyon, people should not be letting you leave the house. There is GPS reception but the canyon is narrow enough that it's really hit and miss. You'll be able to get your "it's 0.4329 miles ahead" reading and then it just might disappear for 10 minutes or an hour. That should be enough to get you within 100 yards. If you need more help than that... Can I recommend an orienteering class?

well if you can get with in a hundred yards or ".4" miles ahead on the right road that is good enough for me. I was meaning the "take the third dirt road after the big bend in the paved road. Then turn right at the large sage brush, if you pass the tree stump you went to far :blahblah: " directions. And then the "oh that was a small bend not the big bend" explanation when someone gets found after being lost. know what i mean? And people that have been there always think they give great directions but that is somewhat because they have already been there before.

Its also a great place for an ass kicking bon-fire.

Sand Flats has more 'general' traffic, mainly because it's now paved all the way up nearly to the Porcupine Trailhead. There are a crapload of campsites. Yes, you have to pay but the last camp near the top is fairly new...ten miles out of town but quiet(I've camped there once) Campsite at the lower elevation are hotter and closer near the top are breezy and cool. The cliff camps are fairly well protected and cool down at night.
Kane Creek Road is much longer and all dirt but you can usually find a place to pull out. The first few miles along the river you end up paying no matter where you pull out & It gets dusty the more traffic it gets & you need a 4wd to cross the creek at times. Cars won't make it past the creek. Lots and lots of places to pull out and set up camp but very few 'marked' paysites past the canyon. It gets windy down the valley once it heads south.
Another area is up river in the Big Bend area. Honestly, Fourtycal and I have camped nearly everywhere down there for the last 15+ years and we tend to head up Sand Flats road most the time simple because of it's proximity to town - I don't really care where we camp. We've even camped down the potash road on several occasions...all the way from the first pull outs to Wall St. and up to the Poison Spider trailhead.
We've looked at the Bull Canyon area below Gemini Bridges but you can't really camp up there anymore. Any camps up on the LaSals are cool but take a while to get to.
.....this is probably information overload(sorry) but pick something easy for everyone to find

Guys, there is a nice little camping spot out near Kens Lake (approx 7 mile out of town) called Flat Pass , generally there is water in the creek which is really nice & some old movie set caves are there, no facilities though. The area has trees for shelter which is nice in the hot weather & swimming is always nice too! The start or finish of Steel Bender is a bit further up the trail & not right near the camping spot.
There is also, of course, out a bit further along the behind the rocks trail as it opens up to a huge flat area, great for open camping & Huge Loud Ho- Downs :2thumbs: let me know if I can help in any way as I would be only too happy

Didn't mean to blow over this. The Arts Festival is in the big park somewhere around the center of town and is just a big getogether of artsy booths - people selling their wares. Not near as big as the Park City arts fest but the same idea...on a moaby shinyhappyhippie level. Lots of food & games & stuff too.

If anyone needs tents...I mean big 6 to 8 man ones, I have a few I can bring for extra changerooms , along with an awning, a foldup kitchenette, sunshowers, dutch ovens, etc. I am gonna plan on building a 'basecamp'. Lightweight tenting will work the best unless someone wants to bring their Wall tent or something. I will be pulling my biketrailer too. It holds around 9 - 10 bikes. Someone bring a nice boombox(mine sucks) - maybe a generator...who knows. I'll have extra coolers & waterjugs......
...I'm just thinking out loud people

Rough'n it! NO TV!!! :nono: Radio's are a dam good thing.

I will be pull my stuff out doing the inventory, making sure everything still works. Hmmm, I have to figure out how to pack everything I jammed into my durango into the forester and add three bikes. Now that will be a trick!

I am soooo excited!!!

I just checked the old event calendar and it looks like either weekend could be made to work for me after all. I'll have to see how things look after the Skinny Tire Festival before I commit though.

And BTW, I'll probably opt for the quiet side of camp for a little bit of personal desert solitaire away from all the fumes.

Hmmm. I hit southern Utah on April 25, and fly back out of Vegas on May 3. But my plan was for all canyons all the time.

Might be able to make this work - not sure yet.

Anyone wanna do some canyons on, say Thursday & Friday (North Wash, anyone?) and hit Moab Friday evening? I'd have to leave town around 3:30AM Sunday. :eek2:

If anyone needs tents...I mean big 6 to 8 man ones, I have a few I can bring for extra changerooms , along with an awning, a foldup kitchenette, sunshowers, dutch ovens, etc. I am gonna plan on building a 'basecamp'. Lightweight tenting will work the best unless someone wants to bring their Wall tent or something. I will be pulling my biketrailer too. It holds around 9 - 10 bikes. Someone bring a nice boombox(mine sucks) - maybe a generator...who knows. I'll have extra coolers & waterjugs.....

If things work out between now and then, I'll be driving my new used car down. :2thumbs: And BTW, I tend to pack light much lighter than this. One bike, one tent, a small kitchen kit centered around a coleman two burner, a good book, no TV, and very few tunes.

Although I'm looking into rigging up a solar powered pump and misters, my big luxuries will likely be firewood and a Kelty Sunshade.

I can easily arrange to arrive on Thursday afternoon but somebody will have to tell me where to go and give me an idea of how much space to try and occupy. Kens Lake, Dubinky Wells, Hunter Canyon, somewhere else? Alison?

I thought you were the one in charge. :haha:

The early "I'm in!"'s always seem to outnumber the actual attendees so at this point, I intend to be packed Wednesday evening and leave Thursday morning. It's been a five hour drive for me in the sporty car, and six in the wonder truck so that puts me in Moab around 2-3 in the afternoon.

Until somebody redirects me to an alternate destination, I'm packing as though I'm headed up Kane Creek Road.

:cool2: My vacation was approved today - I am OFFICIALLY IN!! I am SO stoked! I've been pouring over campsites all over the Moab area and I keep coming back to the Sand Flats area, primarily because of it's proximity to town but at the same time having a remote potential.
The following is from one of the SandFlats websites:
http://www.discovermoab.com/sandflats.htm

Yes, Sand Flats does take reservations for 2 group sites- E-1 and the Radio Tower site. There is a maximum of 16 people in site E-1 and a maximum of 20 people at the Radio Tower site. The maximum number of vehicles for group campsite E-1 is 6 and for the Radio Tower 7. All vehicles and trailers must fit within assigned parking areas.
The reservation fee is $10. The camping fee is $50.00 per night for site E-1. The Radio Tower site fee is $60.00 per night. The $10 reservation fee and camping fees are non-refundable.

The trip leader must pay the reservation fee and first night

I think I know where the radio tower is also and if I remember correctly, it's not the BEST campground up there. I think the E1 is going to be more desirable. However, to accommodate a group, are we willing to sacrifice a bit? Or not? Just let me know before I reserve this as it's not refundable and will go on my credit card.

The map below is the best I could find. I am assuming the E is where E1 would be for a group camp and if I remember correctly, this is a more desirable camping area. Once again, I am still waiting to hear back. I talked to another person at the BLM phone # this morning and they said that I might have called too late (8:50am) but if I left a message they are good about getting back the next morning.

Where the E is will be more desirable. Where the 2 is will be pretty much a parking lot, but a pretty scenic parking lot. You are also within a hop skip and a jump of medevil chamber. :five:

UPDATE- Both group camp sites on Sand Flats are unavailable on those dates. The first available date for E1 is weekend of May 29,30, 31.

A. We just show up early on Thursday (I can) and grab a few individual campsites on Sand flats, knowing the individual sites COULD be taken (b/c it is Moab) and then we are screwed.

B. We change the date to end of May, but some of us have already cleared time off and I don't know how flexible some of us are? And Cirrus is going to be in town, so we wouldn't want to pass up a chance to meet Kev in person.

C. We check other group campsites in the Moab area via this website. After looking, most are filling up for that weekend so we need to act quick.

The above campground has availability for all of us. Their concept is a little different. There are no RV's. It's tent camping only and you park away from the tent area. You haul in your gear (which is only 100 feet). Other thing is, no campfires b/c they want to eliminate the carbon burn. BUT they do have propane grills that they supply for us to grill. It's a more GREEN camping experience. HAHA!!

I've wanted to check out the Up The Creek place. Tired of tenting in RV places. Maybe it's just me...

The BLM places - only Upper Onion Creek (up to 15 people) and Lone Mesa sites are still open. Lone Mesa looks pretty desolate. :ne_nau:

I've stayed at Canyonlands RV (north of town a ways) and it was OK.

Problem with the private campgrounds is the cost, of course... Still, cheaper than a motel.

I'm good with that, too. I'll probably be mostly in unimproved sites all week, anyway. The only thing about the Lone Mesa site is how barren it is - lack of vegetation and all. I think the name says it all - as opposed to a name like "Shady Dell" or "Leafy Wash" or something.

Plus it's about 20 miles to Moab for booze. Or a flush toilet. Pre-planning. It's all about pre-planning.

Still - I'd be good with it... Wanna nab one of these while it's available? Up to 30 ppl per site. Sites A, B and E are available on Thurs thru Saturday nights.

Until mid-July, I can get time off to do most anything with 2-3 weeks notice. Point me somewhere and I can try camping in one site and holding a second while hoping there's help holding a few more for the rest come Friday night.

I plan to show up with my car camping gear, my primary mountain bike, my hiking boots, maybe my road bike (Arches rocks as a road bike ride), and a few good books. PS- PLEASE make sure to tell me if you'd like to be on the group camp list as this is a limited space and I am going to have to pay up front for per person, per night when I call.:

I'll be in Moab that weekend for sure. If there is still room at the group camp count me in for Friday and Saturday night. :2thumbs:

Campground is reserved and confirmed for Friday May1 and Sat May2. GoldBar Campsites on Potash road, Site D. This site is mostly used by RV'ers so it only has 2 pits and two picnic benches with no shade. If this isn't cool with everyone, then let me know asap so I can get my $10 reservation fee back. HEHE!!! I do have to get a headcount by April 15th to make the final payment. It's 2.50 pp, per night. So $5 pp for the weekend made payable to me when we get there. I'll continue to look to see if anything better pops up but I have a feeling this is going to be it. :2thumbs:

I think with the crowd that will be there, you'll have your choice of destinations. My bike won't be capable of anything crazy but I'd love to hit Sovereign for the first time and maybe Poison Spider minus The Portal. A pure XC hardtail just won't cut it for that.

I can't wait. I don't think Spring is going to make it to the Cache Valley until June.

Biking Agenda: We will be literally a minutes' ride from the Poison Spider TH. It's not a 'singletrack'. It will kick you butt if youre not prepared. You will likw it anyway :haha: . After that most any trail down there is fine by me. I havent done Sovereign. I'd like to do 'Baby Steps' off the Klondike Bluffs trail. Bartlett Wash...both easy and technical mix.

Got up this morning thinking about what to do about meals....I know I know, it might be a little early to think about such things but I woke up hungry :lol8: Anybody have some thoughts, suggestions, etc.? Alison and I have talked about it and neither one of us want to become the camp cook but we are willing to bring whatever cooking stuff it takes IF thats the route we want to take...and I'm sure there are those of us who would fill in/pitch in cooking. MY thoughts are: maybe one group breakfast one day...a dinner or two & see how the cards fall after that. I like eating in town from time to time. I also like to make a picnic lunch and take it wherever we are & eat sandwiches or something easy....breakfast or lunch. Sometimes I just like to head to Moab Diner... :haha:

My thoughts exactly! I intend on bringing one or two ovens. I never, and I mean never follow a recipe when doing cobblers so it'll be whatever hits me when I walk through the grocery store, and I should have plenty of room in a cooler for dry ice & icecream to keep it frozen.

Matty, you have GOT to have some killer experience when it comes to camp cooking :2thumbs: any scouter worth his salt does  We're gonna need a few ideas kicked around for a main course for probably one group dinner one night, at least thats what we're thinking about. Acca and I have several...ok...many ovens as I'm sure you do too. We will need one or two coleman stoves if some one wants to do a breakfast....heat up some water for coffee...cocoa...late night evenings are nice for a hot something or other. Personally, I'll probably eat light for most breakfasts. I'm planning on getting fruit & veggies at the City Market there, maybe some sausage & eggs, milk, juice, bread - basics. I figure lunches though will hardly be cooked at all. All the food I bring to camp will be open for anyone to eat. We need to have goodies & such  We need water jugs. Never can have too much water, but I was planning on getting some cases of bottled water too.
Any 'gadgets' you feel you can bring to a group camp this size by all means DO

Sorry to hear you can't make it, tree!

Food: I've never really camped with groups before. Interested in seeing the dynamic.

When car camping, I usually bring along pasta or rice dishes, salad in the cooler, cans of tuna, buns, etc. I'll be buying supplies and water in town. I'll have my backpacking stove... :haha: Out and about during the day, I usually make a sandwich or two, and eat lots of trail mix type things.

Being a veggie boy (apart from fish) I'm probably not the best for joining into big group meals...

Dessert, though - I'm in!

I think for a group dinner we should all just make up something big enough to share with others??? Obviously something that will keep fresh for a day or so. Also I think we should maybe designate a night, like Saturday night to do a group thing? I'm a fan of eating light and keeping it simple b/c I don't want to mess with the clean up, etc....so I will fly solo on the rest of the meals. I'd rather get out there and play. But for a group dinner, I can make up some K-bobs. Marinated Beef/chicken and veggies? And some Veggie Kbobs for those veggie folks. I can also like to make up a light pasta salad with veggies, jack cheese and a light dressing. That would keep really well for a day or so on ice until cooking time and it's easy. I will also bring my little baby Weber to grill up the goodness.

Kev- obviously are going to be living out of your car for a week, so don't sweat it. Just join in and we'll take care of the rest. I'll marinate some veggies for ya. :2thumbs:

So I'm thinkin' canyons - I know Scout Master's thinkin' the same thing, and I'm sure others are too.

I'm planning to take part in adventures on Friday the 1st and Saturday the 2nd of May. I'll be missing out on Sunday, and I know that only some people will be there Friday...

I'm hoping to be ambitious and get a couple of shorter routes done on one day, and a longer one the other. Or perhaps one short route each morning (on which the less experienced can join in without feeling much pressure) followed by something just slightly more adventurous later in the day (or vice versa?) And after that, maybe a moonlight hike to Delicate Arch?

Here are a few routes I'd be interested in:

U-Turn (2 hours)
Tierdrop Canyon (3 hours)
Medieval Chamber (3 hours + shuttle time)
Elephant Butte (4 hours)
Cameltoe (4 hours)
Granary Canyon (6-7 hours)

Some are in Arches NP, others are close to the group camp site. There will be lots of ropes and lots of harnesses (bring helmets if you got 'em!). People with experience rappeling, anchoring, and belaying. We just need some people keen to join in...

Any interest in doing any of these? Perhaps U-Turn and Elephant Butte one day, Cameltoe and Medieval Chamber the other? Or dedicate one of the days to Granary Canyon?

Thoughts?

Yes, very interested. No experience beyond the Subway with a diaper sling and a half rope though. Never done a rappel longer than about 30 feet and it's been 20 years since I did that. I'm sure I'd need to work up to a longer one or a free rappel.

I've been dying to acquire enough climbing experience to put the Grand Teton within my reach but have had few opportunities given a certain non-profit cycling organization's tendency to monopolize weekends.

As far as equipment goes, I'm always allowed to buy another toy or two for each grand adventure. :2thumbs:

It looks like my oldest son and I may be able to attend this event. Going to be down the weekend before at the car show but I'm working on my wife for a kitchen pass. I will not need camping space I'll just stay in town.

As far as canyoneering I have done all of the ones listed on climb utah. As well as all of the ones the guides in town do.
These are my opinions of the best of what is available in moab.

Rock of Ages is a must do. For moab it's good and the name is cool.
The two canyoneering routes in fiery furnace are the best in moab. They can be combined with a cool short cut and be done in a half day. Getting the permit is a pain but worth it.
U turn is better then tierdrop.
Dragon fly is fun. The hike out is a little long.
Granary has the most meat of anything in moab but the shuttle is a pain. With the shuttle it is a full day. If you can get someone to drive you up and dump you out that really helps.
There are several others that can be discussed.

How many want to go canyoneering?

I'll tag along along on what ever the group wants to do. As far as other activities I am game for jeeping, biking or motorcycling.

My son will want to go motorcycling. If any want to tag along on a couple of awesome motorcycle rides we've got a bunch. One of our favorites is. We combine steel bender, behind the rocks and then come down pritchett canyon, these are all jeep trails in the area. You can also combine poison spider, golden spike and metal masher and then head down long canyon or come back around up rusty nail and back to gold bar campground. Both of these adventures take about a half a day. There are dozens more but these two are fun. If you haven't got a bike but have experience you can rent them in moab about $150 per day. To do these it helps if your bike is road legal. But you can work around that if you have to. Just some suggestions.

If jeeping is on there are dozen of trails but moab rim is the best trail in town. Short and fun.

Thats the beauty of moab multiple activities can be done in one day.

If I can pull it all off, I plan on heading down thursday night and coming back sunday night.

Wait did I just agree to riding a mountain bike? In Moab? Where they have hard slick rock to crack my head on? Sorry I must have smoking crack Wade. HAHA!!!! If someone would take me on a completely noobie trail, I may be willing. :ne_nau:

Here is a great spot to get the feel for slick rock. Go to the slick rock bike trail. Ride your bike or push it up through the first saddle. Getting through the saddle is the hardest part of the whole ride. After you get through that saddle right in that area is a great area to go up and down and around. You can spend about an hour learning the ropes. DO NOT try the practice loop on your first adventure. It's as hard as the whole trail just shorter. This area is my 7 year olds favorite spot to ride his mtn bike. He also rides his 70 motorcycle all over in this area. Loves it. The best part is if your not having fun you are two minutes from your car and asphalt.

ONE MONTH GUYS! woo hoo!!! So I gave the ok to the print company to make a Bogley flag today for our campouts. I'll pass it on to the appropriate person when we get to Moab. Fun stuff!!! Hope it turns out ok. Once again, just a reminder to let me know if you'd like to camp at the group campspot or not. Will need to give a final payment on April 15th. :2thumbs: You guys keep the recommendations coming and I will update them as needed. :2thumbs:

Ok bum deal going on here........I really thought it'd be cool to get a Bogley flag made but time and money are of essence. I've priced having one made at a local sign/print shop and sheesh....the one we would want is running $250. They can go cheaper, but it would be tiny. I just can't spend it. SO...............if anyone else in a larger city with more options would like to check on it, let me know. We only have less than 3 weeks until moab. If it doesn't happen, then it's no biggie but thought it would be cool. I've also been really busy with making costumes for a big dance I have coming up and attempting to practice as often as I can so the stress is kicking in.....i haven't update the Moab thread as often as I'd like. So it's still on and I will make the final payment for the campground this week. Please check the list one last time and make sure you are either on or off? Let me know!

My new Moab road trip machine complete with the turbocharged engine, 6 disc changer, climate control, heated seats, and a near immaculate interior. Just wait until this beauty is set up with a Thule rack, hitch receiver, and a second set of summer tires on 17" wheels.

I'll be starting packing this weekend and leaving Wednesday. If I can find a spot in Jaycee Park or Williams Bottom, I'll camp there. If the group site is a person or two short of the minimum 15, I'll be breaking camp and moving. I will otherwise stay where I am until I'm ready to leave in the middle of the following week. If I can't find a site in Jaycee Park or Williams Bottom, I'll be looking for GHB and the rest in Sand Flats.

Weather is going to be fantastic in Moab. I have everything packed except a few food items I don't want to buy until Tues night.

So a friend was telling me that a good trail to ride with the kids would be Monitor Mitmac, and a swimming hole Joe's Reservoir.

What other trails would be good for kids?

cachehiker
04-27-2009, 09:34 AM
I've ridden the Monitor and Merrimac trail a few times. There's a both bike loop around Courthouse Rock and a jeep trail out to the actual buttes. The bike loop is OK but the playground around the buttes is much better. Unfortunately, the jeep trail is like riding through a 2 mile long sand trap to get there and then again to get back out. I won't usually consider it unless it's a weekday, it has rained recently, and we're likely to beat most of the ATV's and motorcycles out there.

I like the Left Fork of Tusher Canyon better. It isn't a difficult trail but it involves some improvisational route finding and a few portages up to the next ledge before you're on top at the playground. Here's the view from there with Courthouse Rock on the left, Monitor Butte dead center, and Merrimac Butte just to the right of Monitor. You can see the giant sand trap of a jeep trail winding its way out there.

I hope you've got beefy tires and good sand skills.

I would not recommend taking kids out around monitor biking. There is a ton of sand out there. Not familiar with Joe's Reservoir for swimming?

If your kids want to do a fun climbing activity. Head down the kane creek road side of the colorado. When you come to the first campground on the left pull in by the anazasi ruins. There is a cool slot right there with logs jammed in it that you and your kids can climb.

For a fun kid hike that is off the beaten path start at the bridge crossing courthouse wash coming into town. There is a parking lot there. It's easier to start if you cross the bridge and then walk up stream for as far as you want to go. In 100 yards you go from civilization to pristine red rocks. If they have teva's they can walk in the stream. Kids love it. Another great kid hike is start at the bottom of negro bill canyon and hike up until they get bored. That one can be a little crowded.
One more is go down the kane creek road to hunter wash and head up it. Fun and easy. There is a arch up there you can climb up into. Climb-Utah has a couple of family hikes on that same road I think they are called birthing stone and funnel arch?
I haven't done this one in years but if you go down from where you guys are camping there is a canyon (day canyon) that has a gate across it. Whether you are tresspassing I do not know, but the hike up the botttom use to be awesome. Climbers head up that drainage to climb all over the walls.
Wish I was going.

I am pretty sure that road is the one the blm closed recently. What people use to due with kids. If you had a fourwheel drive they would drive out to that big slick rock patch in the picture and then let there kids ride around. But I think there is a gate now.

From the dead horse road you can go along the spring canyon road and then head towards dubinky well, when you come to the intersection where bartlet wash road goes north there is a bunch of flat slick rock there that people ride with kids.
The actual bartlet wash slickrock is fun to, kind of a pain to get up on it but it's good.
Cashehiker, did you notice if motorcycles had been riding on the tusher slick rock dome?

The Sevenmile Rim Trail is still listed as a jeep safari route and the BLM Travel Management Plan still shows that one as "dirt road, unmaintained". I wouldn't be surprised if it's gated off during the winter though. There's always been some muddy sections going back and forth across the streambed when I've ridden it. In any case, I've always parked and ridden it on a mountain bike. My aging Toyota 4x4 is capable enough but it is still 100% stock and I'm sure it would have its share of difficulties.

Last time I rode Monitor and Merrimac it was a Monday after a rainstorm and I was on big floaty 2.3" Specialized Roll-X tires at 35 psi and had no problem. My ex-expert class racer buddy was on some POS Hutchinson 2.0 somethings with minimal tread pumped up pretty hard for the slick rock and he wore himself to death stepping off, walking, getting back on, catching back up, stepping off, walking, getting back on, catching back up, and repeat, and repeat, and repeat. :frustrated:

I rode Tusher Canyon solo last time and there was no evidence of anybody anywhere up on the dome. There was no evidence of motorcycles after the initial portage either. I know I wouldn't want to hoist a downhill bike up there let alone an actual motorized version. :haha:

moab mark
04-27-2009, 12:44 PM
Is that road the one past the dino tracks or up tusher wash? The dino track road is what they closed. As far as the motorcycles I had heard they had found a different route up there?

cachehiker
04-27-2009, 01:50 PM
I've passed the Dino Trailhead but have never hiked it. I don't even remember on which dome in particular one was supposed to find them. The preceding pic was taken from where the red X is in the following pic so I guess that wasn't Courthouse Rock on the left after all. The playground was approached from Tusher Canyon to the west.

In any case, I'd be inclined to assume one could still find one's way to Monitor and Merrimac on a mountain bike by taking the Sevenmile Trail, after looping around to the north side of Courthouse Rock and back to the road, or by simply climbing the gate and getting back on your bike. I couldn't find anything mentioning a closure involving non-motorized vehicles and the notice I found involving motorized vehicles was somewhat indistinct about which road and what parts of it.

Here is a link to the blms new travel plan. It shows the gate. It is only for motorized traffic. I think the map you want is page 16 or 17

I have to work Friday night, so I am headed down on Saturday morning and I'll be there Saturday and come back on Sunday afternoon. Are there going to be any designated hikes or get togethers on Saturday? I saw on the first post that there was talk of doing dinner on Saturday night but I didn't see a finalized time and location.

Same set of maps I've been looking at. Not sure where I'm supposed to see a gate on page 16. The legend doesn't include a symbol for gates, just which roads are for what purpose. It doesn't show the Mill Canyon Road as being open for motorcycles or ATV's either so I wouldn't be surprised to find a gate that used to be open is now closed or an entirely new gate.

I haven't ridden that road out to Monitor and Merrimac in about 2 years. At that point, ATV's and motorcycles outnumbered bicycles by five to one.
