I am going to sound like a commercial here but bare with me.

Did you know that fiber-optic internet is twice as fast as the fastest Comcast speed for $12 less per month, and one five times faster for $3 less per month? The Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency (or UTOPIA) is a not for profit network build by 14 Utah cities.

Here are the internet rates for Murray where I live:

Qwest DSL (Download only)
1.5 Mbps $31.99
7 Mbps $41.99

Comcast Cable (Download only)
6 Mbps $42.99
8 Mbps $52.95

Utopia Fiber-Optic (Upload and Download)
15 Mbps $39.95
50 Mbps $49.95

The upload times for Comcast and Qwest are not listed on their websites because they blow so bad. When I had 1.5 Mbps with Qwest the upload was ~800Kbps.

So if you live in

yeah... some dude came to my door trying to hook me up over a year ago... 2 months he said... and yet I am still waiting.

I called last week and the person I talked to said i live in the center of a doughnut. Lines are all around me and there is not current plans to fill in the center of the doughnut.

My good friend serves as General Counsel for UTOPIA. We tried and tried to get my city involved but my retard city council representative was a geezer-tool who needs to be thrown out of office.

btw.. comcast is down at my place right... TV and internet.
The upload speed SUCKS. The service SUCKS. The support SUCKS.

They also want to charge me $65 for a staic IP..... no joke. I am already on the fastest package they have. But to get a static IP I need to upgrade to a commercial account. So them i will lose my "special" and be forced to pay full price... so $65 more a month for a static ip with shitty upload... thanks comcast!

Ha! I work for iProvo, not Utopia. If you live in Provo, every house is available to be hooked up right now though. I'm not sure what's up with Utopia. I believe they sold the management group in the last few months, and perhaps they will change their model with new management? Also, they have to build out slowly, because there are so many cities involved. Not a small task.

Glad to hear you are having a good experience though James. There have definitely been some growing pains on both of these networks.

Yeah unfortunately it is not available in all parts of the towns listed. In Murray there are newer parts of the city by the Jordan River that still don

I live in Murray but I don't think the apartment complex I live in is wired for it. I wish they would though. I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I'd look into it. I know some appartments are hooked up. If your appartments are not you could talk to the owners and get permission to have it installed. It would become a selling feature for the appartments.

We have called customer service multiple times to try and get at least the speed we pay for and they keep telling us it will be raised, but it hasn't. with this speed you cant even load a 2 min youtube video, or even simple mp3s. its a complete waste of money and time to use Centurylink. look at my speed test

sooo slowww!! it will probably take 5 mins to post this

Does Utopia monitor and actively block torrents? I know that MStar did (8 years ago) and that experience is what has kept me away from Utopia since. Oh, and one of my clients is an apartment complex and Veracity sent them a letter saying they would cut the internet upon repeat offenses of illegal torrenting.

I live in Murray and have had Utopia through Sumo Fiber for the last 4 months and will never go back to Qwest, Comcast, or Clear. I actually pay a little more for the 100Mbps plan through Sumo, but it is well worth it... Check out my speed (this is when I have 3 computers and a PS3 accessing internet at the same time)

I know you can buy (for life) the fiber from Utopia for what $3000 or something, and then pay the ISP the monthly charge of somthing like $40-$50? Does Sumo have a cap?

The price to buy the line was $2500. I pay for the highest package Sumo offers (69.99) and get 100Mbps internet and a phone line. As far as a cap goes I'm not sure.

bump - anybody still using UTOPIA?

I just read an article in the newspaper (ironic huh) about how Brigham City is trying to figure out a way to get out of the contract. Sounds like it's been a very costly nightmare.

Cities banding together to run something is rarely a good idea. From the article, "envisioned by leaders of 11 Wasatch Front cities as a bold path to Utah's fiber-optic future." Should send shivers down a thinking man's spine.

If there aren't real people with a real business/profit motive in control, it's not gong to work.

I suspect that one of the reasons Google has listed Salt Lake City as one of it's next fiber rollout areas is because it thinks it can pick up Utopia cheaply. Which is the same reason it picked up the Provo City fiber.

Yep, Google has already started in SLC I believe.
