Get UTOPIA Now!! (Fastest Internet in Utah)

I am going to sound like a commercial here but bare with me.

Did you know that fiber-optic internet is twice as fast as the fastest Comcast speed for $12 less per month, and one five times faster for $3 less per month? The Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency (or UTOPIA) is a not for profit network build by 14 Utah cities.

Here are the internet rates for Murray where I live:

    Qwest DSL (Download only)
    1.5 Mbps $31.99
    7 Mbps $41.99

    Comcast Cable (Download only)
    6 Mbps $42.99
    8 Mbps $52.95

    Utopia Fiber-Optic (Upload and Download)
    15 Mbps $39.95
    50 Mbps $49.95

The upload times for Comcast and Qwest are not listed on their websites because they blow so bad. When I had 1.5 Mbps with Qwest the upload was ~800Kbps.

    So if you live in
    • Brigham City
    • Cedar City
    • Cedar Hills
    • Centerville
    • Layton
    • Lindon
    • Midvale
    • Murray
    • Orem
    • Payson
    • Perry City
    • Riverton
    • Tremonton
    • West Valley City

If you don’t live in these cities then move! Or bother your city government and get them to join Utopia. Because already the presence of Utopia has forced Comcast and Quest to lower there prices for there inferior service. So the more that get hooked on the cheaper internet access will be.

Call one of the below ISP and see if you can get hooked up.

    -Xmission 877-964-7746
    -mstar 877-678-2763
    -Veracity 801-437-6565
    -Nuvont 801-623-5000

I have only dealt with Xmission and Mstar. I would recommend either one. Mstar will install the fiber for free with a one year commitment and Xmission requires no commitment you just pay month to month.

yeah... some dude came to my door trying to hook me up over a year ago... 2 months he said... and yet I am still waiting.

I called last week and the person I talked to said i live in the center of a doughnut. Lines are all around me and there is not current plans to fill in the center of the doughnut.

My good friend serves as General Counsel for UTOPIA. We tried and tried to get my city involved but my retard city council representative was a geezer-tool who needs to be thrown out of office.

btw.. comcast is down at my place right... TV and internet.
The upload speed SUCKS. The service SUCKS. The support SUCKS.

They also want to charge me $65 for a staic IP..... no joke. I am already on the fastest package they have. But to get a static IP I need to upgrade to a commercial account. So them i will lose my "special" and be forced to pay full price... so $65 more a month for a static ip with shitty upload... thanks comcast!

Ha! I work for iProvo, not Utopia. If you live in Provo, every house is available to be hooked up right now though. I'm not sure what's up with Utopia. I believe they sold the management group in the last few months, and perhaps they will change their model with new management? Also, they have to build out slowly, because there are so many cities involved. Not a small task.

Glad to hear you are having a good experience though James. There have definitely been some growing pains on both of these networks.

Yeah unfortunately it is not available in all parts of the towns listed. In Murray there are newer parts of the city by the Jordan River that still don’t have it. But luckily for me I live in the old part of the city near State Street.

Yeah I can’t say enough about Utopia internet, my experience have been universally positive. Hell I even thought about going back to church so I can preach the good word to my neighbors at the ward. I had no idea it existed until an IT guy at work told me about it. Then a door to door guy from Mstar came to my house last summer.

I upgraded to the 50 Mbps service today and can’t wait to go home to try it out, stay tuned…

Hell no! I use it to impress my friends, pick up on girls and download porn at unbelievable rate. Man my hands are tired!

No seriously I don’t online game or know how to host web sites. I pretty much just download videos and music as fast as possible to try and fill up my 1 Tb hard drive. How lame is that? Some one will have show me what I should be doing with my internet.

I live in Murray but I don't think the apartment complex I live in is wired for it. I wish they would though. I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I'd look into it. I know some appartments are hooked up. If your appartments are not you could talk to the owners and get permission to have it installed. It would become a selling feature for the appartments.

stay away from century link at all costs

We have called customer service multiple times to try and get at least the speed we pay for and they keep telling us it will be raised, but it hasn't. with this speed you cant even load a 2 min youtube video, or even simple mp3s. its a complete waste of money and time to use Centurylink. look at my speed test

sooo slowww!! it will probably take 5 mins to post this

Does Utopia monitor and actively block torrents? I know that MStar did (8 years ago) and that experience is what has kept me away from Utopia since. Oh, and one of my clients is an apartment complex and Veracity sent them a letter saying they would cut the internet upon repeat offenses of illegal torrenting.

    Utopia kicks major A**

I live in Murray and have had Utopia through Sumo Fiber for the last 4 months and will never go back to Qwest, Comcast, or Clear. I actually pay a little more for the 100Mbps plan through Sumo, but it is well worth it... Check out my speed (this is when I have 3 computers and a PS3 accessing internet at the same time)

I know you can buy (for life) the fiber from Utopia for what $3000 or something, and then pay the ISP the monthly charge of somthing like $40-$50? Does Sumo have a cap?
