A bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit, Truckee ) on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared the bear into jumping off the bridge. Somehow the bear caught himself on a ledge and was able to pull itself to safety. Authorities decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge. After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized, fell into the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net.

Glad it had a happy ending. Could have several ways. All bad for the bear.

I want to know how it could "jump off the bridge" and then grab on to a ledge that doesn't stick out of the bridge, not even as wide as the bridge itself...Looks like part of the story is missing or sensationalized. Pretty awesome none the less.

I suspect the bear "climbed" over the rail rather than "jumped" over. I've seen them climb a tree so easily it seemed more like normal, level walking. In any case, glad he survived the ordeal. I've gone over that bridge and it's quite a drop.
