Why Obama got a Nobel Peace Prize for nothing — and Trump never will for anything
President Barack Obama’s first act as a Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2009 — nine months after he took the oath of office — was to try to wriggle out of accepting it.
“The morning the prize was announced, his staff investigated whether anyone had failed to travel to Oslo to receive their prize,” writes Nobel insider Geir Lundestad in “The World’s Most Prestigious Prize” (Oxford), out this month.
Apparently, the president was among the 61 percent of Americans who believed he didn’t deserve it.
“It is true, Obama did not do much before winning,” Lundestad, 74, a member of Norway’s Nobel Committee until 2014, told The Post. “But he represented the ideals of the committee. And when we have an American president who supports that message, we like to strengthen him.”

Alright...a post of "no particular reason" that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with pride, anticipation and happiness...
So when I "bugged out" into the boonies of Southern Utah back in April, I was camped out for weeks and determined that a truck camper would be very desirable. I'm pretty set up with all my tent camping gear, but being able to get out of bad weather and stretch out with everything in easy reach has become a goal. No desire for a trailer and I don't want something so cumbersome that going deep into the backcountry is impossible...so I settled on a pop up truck camper.
Today I dropped the down payment and got the order in just how I'm going to have it built...off grid, solar to the max along with many other options to make it really luxe. This picture is an example of what I bought...it's a Hallmark Flatbed unit and it has a shower and toilet inside! They'll start building it in January and have it delivered to me by the beginning on March. In the meantime, I'll be ordering a Ford F-350 4X4 Lariat Supercab chassis cab (no pickup bed)...the Hallmark will be mounted on a Hillsboro aluminum flatbed.
I'm still undecided on wether to get the Diesel engine (mega power) or go with the new 7.3l V8...which is an engine that is getting great reviews for it's performance. It has half the torque of the diesel but there are plenty of guys that are running these with 5.7s (Toyota) 5.9s (Ram) and 6.2s (Ford's base V8) and although the mileage is around 10, they say the power from these smaller mills is fine. The big diesel costs about 8K more, weighs an extra 800lbs and is a lot more complex. I'll get it figured out...
I like the simplicity of the gasser, but having the diesel means I'd have absolutely zero concern regarding the weight I'm hauling...all the gear, backpacking, canyoneering, two bikes, tools, clothing, food, water and various accouterments. The payload on the truck is over 4000lbs, and the unit itself will weigh in at around 2300 dry...so loaded up it's likely to be just over 3000lbs...well under the GVWR but having that monster engine means it would just shrug it off. I'd love to test drive the 7.3 with a heavy load in the bed before I order one...maybe I can arrange that.
Anyway, I'm pretty excited. I'll be taking most of next summer to travel quite a bit. All I have to do now is order the truck before the end of October. I'll post pictures as it all comes together. The end of the world for some...

Go diesel and don't look back.
The mileage will be much better and going up steep grades without the engine hardly noticing is priceless.
It should come down to economics, those that can afford it--go diesel, those who can't--go gas.
No one has ever complained about too much HP and you don't have to use it, which is where the better mileage comes in.I'm not Spartacus

Yeah...my decision was a quick one. It's gonna be the diesel. I talked to a couple guys at the paint store this morning about it...one of them is driving an '11 F-250 with the 6.7 and he says it's an absolute beast...just loves it.
The other guy has a brother who's a firefighter and all those guys are diesel freaks for pulling trailers and toys. One of them switched to a gasser (the big HEMI) and within two months traded back to the diesel. Seems like no one that has the diesel wishes they had a gasser instead...but it can go the other way pretty easy, I reckon. Which is exactly what I want to avoid...so diesel it is. This will be the first one I've ever owned.
The good news is this engine has been in production for ten years now and in it's third generation...so they've ironed out the bugs and indeed it gets great reviews for reliability. Comes standard with 5yr/100K warranty...whereas the gasser is 3yr/36K.
I'm excited. The end of the world for some...

Yeah, but the problem is that most places I go I'll have weirdos coming around to look it over...not that it's a real problem...some guys are cool to talk to, but with others I can be like "Get the hell out of here".
I get it all the time with my work van. It's really nice and makes a great impression, but it can be annoying with people chasing me down the street. It's great for business but when I'm camping I'd prefer to be left alone...no staring, please. That's the problem with owning a really nice rig...when it's ugly no one pays attention. The end of the world for some...
