Expedition Utah's Freeze Your Tail Off 4
What: Freeze Your Tail Off 4
When: December 21st - 22nd
Where: The Sun Tunnels
Who: Anyone interested in freezing out in the west desert to have a chance seeing the sun rise through the Sun Tunnels for the winter solctice.
Details:
This is Expedition Utah's fourth annual Freeze Your Tail Off campout! we will be meeting at the gas station in Delle [Map] at 6:00pm on Friday, December 21st. From there we will caravan to the Bonneville Speedway exit off I-80 [Map]. This is your last chance for gas, if you need it. After topping off our tanks we will caravan to the Sun Tunnels [Map].
Once we reach the Sun Tunnels, we'll pitch camp and get a fire going! Everyone is encouraged to bring wood, as it will be COLD out there!
In the morning, if you're able, try to wake up for the sunrise as it shines through the tunnels, it really is a sight to see. After everyone has thawed a little and is ready to get moving again we will split into two groups. One that heads up over the old Transcontinental Railroad grade back towards Brigham City and another down around the Silver Island Mountains and Wendover again.
So if braving the cold for a night sounds entertaining to you (and we hope it does!) please post up so that we know who's going!

Great. Count me in. Is this all full sized (truck, jeep, SUV) type vehicles? Any SxS or ATV's coming along? I can get about ~140 miles on the ATV before needing to find a gas station (using my extra 4gal flat fuel pack); otherwise its the wifes 4Runner, kids Jeep or my Dually.

Wow, I think I drove pretty close by this site when I was travelling between the Silver Island Mt's and Lucin (to pick up the old transcontinental RR grade back to the east). However, I didn't know about it at the time!
Unfortunately, I have to work Saturday evening so I can't go. But it looks like you'll have plenty of people on hand! Stay warm out there!

Well, that was cold, fun and different. The Sun Tunnels were NOT what I expected. What's more, when all the Jeeps, FJ's and Taco's start airing down their tires and you're driving a dually weighing 10k pounds and tires at 65psi, you know you're in for some stuff. Rutted, wash boarded and rocky. Beat the crap out of my truck so much that the front suspension made contact with the front diff cover and I blew out both tail lights on the departure!
Great folks in that group, but doing 50-60mph on that trail at night wasn't so much fun. I should have taken the Jeep or the 4Runner instead!2020 Jeep Gladiator (2" Lift, 37" Tires, Falcon 3.3 Shocks, Lockers, Sliders)

Were there many other folks out there (not affiliated with/inspired by bogley)?
Maybe I can make it for the spring equinox, LOL. Depends on my crazy work schedule. Will you be organizing a trip then?

There were people from:
- Wasatch Cruisers (Utah Toyota Land Cruiser club)
- Expedition Utah (A Utah forum dedicated to backcountry vehicle travel)
- Rocky Mountain Extreme 4x4 (A Utah forum dedicated to rock crawling)
Many people belong to all 4 forums.

It was a great trip. Super super cold (coldest I've ever camped, it got as low as 3* at 6 AM). I'll definitely be there again next year.
