What should I do in Kanab?
My family is going down to Kanab this weekend. We are going to enter the lottery for the Wave but assuming we aren't that lucky, what should we do this weekend?
We have done Red Canyon / Peekaboo previously and really liked it.
We are planning on driving out to White Pocket in my Toyota Tundra.
We have done Antelope Canyon previously and we loved it but it but we are looking for something that isn't with a tour group.
Thanks in advance!"My heart shall cry out for Moab..." Isaiah 15:5

The canyon is guided heavily and probably has too many bolts. There are bolts where you can down climb or do a partner assist. So yes, plenty of bolts. :)

A few weeks ago the road to the trailhead was closed. Look for a paper notice at thre start of the road.
A fun spot for kids is the “Belly of the Dragon” just north of Mt Carmel Junction. It is a manmade tunnel, but it is interesting to visit.

Of course, Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch. Also, NEVER pass up the opportunity to eat at the Flying V!

Looks like a lot of these suggestions are quite a ways from Kanab itself. I had a couple friends who lived there for about 5 years in the late 90s...they ran a little bake shop on the main drag. I visited them quite often and we'd go backpacking off the North Rim, mostly.
However, Rita took me to a nearby canyon for a hike...it was just north of town, south of the animal sanctuary. There were a bunch of dilapidated ruins and it was a pleasant stroll. She was telling me the old timers in town would find Anasazi pots back in the day and use them for target practice. Indeed, we found potshards all over the place. The Indians were pretty thick around there...but I've never heard of any large ruins. Maybe some on some private property around? The end of the world for some...
The foundation of paradise for others.

[Off-topic] Many years ago (1986) when I first visited SW Utah, and before Utah became a serious tourist-trap, Kanab's slogan was "The Greatest Earth on Show"
The only link I can find to that expression is from 2012: http://www.discoverutahmagazine.com/...-earth-on-show
and a few photos on the internet like this one:
Perhaps these old signs are still around. I've been back 16 or 17 times since then (it's a long way for me to get there) [/Off-topic]
