no one is, or was, "minding the store"
take a peek at worldwide steel production, USA has 1/10th the output of the world's number one producer. America's ability to produce a LOT of steel was crucial helped it win WW2. No way we will repeat that again.
Interestingly, the UK is on the verge of losing its steelmaking capacity.
Note - I mean make steel from iron (or raw materials), not from scrap iron.
The captains of industry in this country only car for a quick profit.
And don't blame our politicians, they are not running the country.

We create these super high tech weapons systems and then tell our "enemies" how to build them. We've been doing that for a long time...take a look at Japan in the '20s and 30s. You'd think if we got into a real conflict they'd just starve us out of raw materials, but that 'aint going to happen because all of them will be making money.
Besides, who's to say what the price of steel would be if it were massed produced here? A guy sweeping the floors at GM earns nearly forty dollars an hour plus significant benefits.
The only "ugly" side of "Capitalism" to me is that those with so much money have way too much power...but then again, it's no different anywhere else...unless you get a guy like Castro...he wanted everybody to live like him, and they did.The end of the world for some...
The foundation of paradise for others.
