What do you expect from Utah county?

I wonder since masks "don't work" if anti-maskers would be cool with their surgeon performing surgery on them without a mask and gloves, you know, since masks don't work and farts seep through underwear.

Surgeon use an N95 mask, which is totally different from the toilet paper or underwear masks everyone is wearing. If you can smell a fart through your mask it's worthless against Covid-19 as the Covid molecules are smaller then your fart... but don't let science get in the way of stupidity....

Yeah, you're wrong. I can also go to the internet and find out how 100,000,000 people are voting for Trump in November. We can agree to disagree.

I don't get the hassle in basic common sense. Countries that wore masks and distanced are basically open up. Europe did it, the other day Florida had more new cases then the entire continent. It works but 1/2 of our civilian population is totally undisciplined. I don't bitch people out for not wearing a mask, I don't care, it's there choice. Is there a chance I could get Covid wearing a mask, of course. Wearing one at the store or in public, doing my shopping at 7 am on saturday and sunday and generally doing activities outside will likely give me a better shot at not getting it. Yeah, those things aren't hard, not political and just make sense.

Silly liberals.... you're doing much more damage through sheep mentality and sheer stupidity then those not wearing a mask will ever do...

I expect better and I see better. I live in Utah County. In fact, I believe this is the very vocal and underwhelming MINORITY of citizens of Utah County. Most people I see, and I am out and about quite a bit, are wearing masks in public.

So, Iceaxe, which is it? Are the government officials parroting the words of the medical and scientific community or are the medical and scientific communities parroting the government officials' words? I know, as an elected official, I am listening to the medical and scientific community, not anyone in politics.

BTW, your statement and quote above are apples and oranges. They don't quite match up but are in the group of things that are on trees. :)

Just a few days ago France and Britain enacted a mandatory face mask policy because cases are spiking again.

Do you check your facts before you post, or do you just post on emotion?

Yeah I do as well out and about in SLC. It's a good thing, common sense is a good thing.

So yeah, they show signs of the virus spiking back so they are taking precautions. That's a good thing.

Also, don't think my response was emotional, just factual. What do I know? I have no idea why the NBA or MLS thought it was a good idea to go to ground zero to start their seasons. #notfake

I see mountains of data every day during my daily round table check in's with leadership at the hospital I work for. Also in the forums I participate in. However you size it up, masking helps. I haven't seen anyone with a "paper" or "underwear" mask yet, that's just a false narrative. Most people I see wear the same mask I do. It's the disposable clinical mask used at the hospital. They're not much in price, if they're good for clinicians they're good enough for me.

Axe, by the way, I've been in OR's fixing hardware during surgery. I was wearing the same mask as the surgeon and procedural nurses... so besides the sawing sound of a dude's chest being open, it wasn't that bad.

    Do you wear a mask?

I’m in Nephi at the Chevron/Wendy’s. The place is packed and there isn’t a mask in sight. It’s like going back in time and not just the lack of masks.

We are headed to the rodeo here, so we shall see on the mask situation.

So @Iceaxe did you read the entire article published by the NEJM or just the part that fits your narrative?

The authors came back an clarified in June. Here you go.

    TO THE EDITOR:

We understand that some people are citing our Perspective article (published on April 1 at NEJM.org)1*as support for discrediting widespread masking. In truth, the intent of our article was to push for more masking, not less. It is apparent that many people with SARS-CoV-2 infection are asymptomatic or presymptomatic yet highly contagious and that these people account for a substantial fraction of all transmissions.2,3*Universal masking helps to prevent such people from spreading virus-laden secretions, whether they recognize that they are infected or not.4

We did state in the article that “wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection,” but as the rest of the paragraph makes clear, we intended this statement to apply to passing encounters in public spaces, not sustained interactions within closed environments. A growing body of research shows that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is strongly correlated with the duration and intensity of contact: the risk of transmission among household members can be as high as 40%, whereas the risk of transmission from less intense and less sustained encounters is below 5%.5-7*This finding is also borne out by recent research associating mask wearing with less transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly in closed settings.8*We therefore strongly support the calls of public health agencies for all people to wear masks when circumstances compel them to be within 6 ft of others for sustained periods.

    Erica S. Shenoy, M.D., Ph.D.
    Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA

Since publication of their article, the authors report no further potential conflict of interest.

This letter was published on June 3, 2020, at NEJM.org.

Also I believe most surgeries they use regular surgical maskes not the N95. I haven't been at work to confirm this but the times I have observed surgeries it appeared to me that is what they are wearing is regular surgical masks. The masks are used to prevent the doctor and OR staff from infecting the wound.

N95 masks are used when going into rooms or with patients suspected of or confirmed with tuberculosis. This was prior to COVID. They also need to be fit properly or they won't work properly. There is a complete fit process.

This virus is small. Wearing a mask is a pain in the ass. But even a homemade mask will offer some protection in the form of decreasing the amount of virus released from someone that is infected. And like this fact or not, it does offer a healthy person a small amount of protection when in a crowded environment. Also anyone that thinks 6 ft is a barrier is nuts.

Best bet WASH your hands. Frequently. And when in crowded situations it won't hurt to wear a mask. At this point if you still think it is virtue signaling you are not as intelligent as you think you are.

Interesting to note... daily hospital communications stopped June 4th. Just received a text from the hospital they are going back to communicating the status of the hospital again. This time twice a week.

We have the most COVID cases in the hospital this week than in the past. All in ICU.

Just an FYI. Not sure what I can share because we do have HIPPA and I love my job I would hate to lose it.
