A secret trail to Utah’s protected paradise

Interesting article/video report from KSL on a protected area in Canyonlands NP.

    https://www.ksl.com/article/46661663...ected-paradise

The thing is, with the new high-resolution elevation data in Google Earth, I was able to find this spot in about five minutes, just comparing a handful of background features. From the first slideshow photo, it's obvious that it is in Needles. I won't say any more.

Frankly, it's enough for me to have found it in the virtual world. I wouldn't want to risk getting dinged by NPS.

All of the National Parks are required to have such areas so they can monitor impact. I've been to a couple of the area's in Zion NP.

I'm guessing you're referring to the RNAs (research natural areas). I accidentally hiked through one a few years ago (discovered this after I'd been there). Didn't see any signage, fencing, instrumentation, or anything resembling what was seen in the video, but then, that area in Zion is about five times larger..

I didn't hear them refer to this area in Canyonlands as an RNA. If so, that would have been helpful to know to educate the public a bit more.

RNA is not neatly as headline grabbing as 'Secret Paradise', but yeah, the area discussed in the piece is one of Canyonlands Federally mandated RNA's.

I think if you know the area being discussed is one of Canyonlands RNA's it makes it easier to track down, which might be why it wasn't mentioned.

    YMMV

Originally in the piece I noticed they were using pictures of False Kiva, which was also a misdirect. It appears the False Kiva pictures have disappeared for most places advertising the piece.

    from article:
"To avoid doing their own trampling of the soils, the scientists confine their own walking to a network of narrow foot-trails connecting the study sites. They know that too many footprints — or cattle tracks — would undermine the scientific research."

Mine shows more of those darned square trails

Oh, quit beating around the bush. It's Virginia Park...who doesn't know that? I was just there a few weeks ago. There are several entrances from the south side. You can climb up the slick rock and look into it. A few people are climbing up to have a look, as there were footprints in the wash leading to the "easy" way in. Never heard of this wormhole thing...but it's may be one of the cracks coming in from the south of the bowl.

We took a peek into it while trying to find a route to Druid Arch from the south...there isn't one.
Suddenly my feet are feet of mud
    It all goes slo-mo
    I don't know why I am crying
    Am I suspended in Gaffa?

The only way three guys can keep a secret is if two of them are dead.

So---instead of going left to Druid, take a right in the last canyon, you know---the one with the broken branches and the trail with footprints brushed over
