New billion-dollar ski resort coming to Utah

PARK CITY — A New York City developer announced plans Monday for a new ski resort that is slated to be built west of U.S. Highway 40 above the Mayflower exit near Jordanelle Reservoir.

Extell Development Company has already started building the roads that will lead to the Mayflower Mountain Resort and Village, according to Gary Barnett, founder and chairman of the company. In recent years, the company bought 5,000 acres of private land for the project.

“We’re starting on the infrastructure — putting in roads and clearing the ground for putting in roads,” Barnett said. “We’ve cleared the ski routes to some extent.”

The village will have three hotels, one of which will include a convention center and another will be a five-star hotel. The convention center, slated to be built first, will include 100 subsidized rooms with discount rates for active duty and retired military personnel and their families.

“I think this is a great location, and we want our military people to know that this is a great place to do business, but it’s also a great place to play,” Paul Morris, acting executive director of the Military Installation Development Authority.

Barnett said all branches of the military will be welcome to take their families here for a discounted vacation.

“The average soldier doesn’t get paid that much, and this will enable them to have a chance to vacation at a ski resort,” said Barnett.

Groundbreaking for that part of the project is scheduled to begin next spring, he said. The convention center and the ski lifts could be ready as early as the 2021 ski season, he added.

Everything for the resort will be brand new and state-of-the-art, Barnett assured.

He said he’s not sure how much ski terrain will be available, but he expects around two-thirds of the terrain at Deer Valley and several lifts that rise about 1,000 feet.

"We're actually in the midst of studying exactly what kind of skiing we can provide, and I think will determine that the next several months," Barnett said.

Deer Valley is for skiers only and it hasn’t been determined yet whether snowboarders will be allowed at the new resort, he said.

Skiers at Mayflower Mountain Resort could also ski over to Deer Valley, so long as the passes are accepted, he said.

Skiing is somewhat of an afterthought when it comes to this new ski resort. They haven't even thoroughly planned where the runs will be.
It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

Agreed. This has poor planing written all over it. If you look at how hard it is for Deer Valley to get snow on Deer Crest on most ski seasons this resort will struggle greatly in the sking department and if they don’t firm up a mutual agreement with Deer Valley..... good luck.
