    Angels Landing Zion National Park

My wife and I hiked the very popular Angels Landing trail in Zion National Park again after a few years. You've all seen the photos of crazy crowd issues on the trail, lines a quarter mile long waiting to climb up the final stretch of chains, right?

Well I have this theory that most of these places die down in the late afternoon. So it was Friday night and we entered the park at 5 pm, headed right for the trail and cruised up. No waiting, no crowds, only some occasional hikers passing by. This was one of those days where they still had the "Zion NP Parking Lot Full" as well.

So, my outdoor friends, if you want to visit these places but hate the crowds, just go in the late afternoon.

Make sure you've still got daylight enough to finish the trail though. The last shuttle bus departs at 9:15 pm so just make sure you can get back down to the trailhead in time.

The trail length, round trip is about 5 miles. My wife and I made the whole hike in about 3 hours 15 minutes, with plenty of 2 minute stops, and plenty of viewing time up top. I shot a TON of cool video I'm looking forward to editing, but for now I'll share a few pictures.

It's rated as a strenuous hike, @1500 feet in the 2.5 miles.

Compare with these crowds common for this time of year

Going early also works. The herds hit the park about 10 am after they have fed their face at the free breakfast and get all the kids packed into the car. The crowds die down about 4 pm because they all need to hurry and get back to town and get ready for dinner.

We used to do an early hike, head into town for a nice lunch at the deserted restaurants, and then do an evening hike.

The biggest problem with Zion is room rates have gotten ridiculous, I seldom visit Zion anymore.

Agreed, room rates are ridiculous. Stay in nearly brand new La Quinta in La Verkin, Wingate in Hurricane, or Hampton in St. George for less than half what you'd pay in Springdale. A few more minutes/miles drive to get into the park, but worth it for the $avings.

Here is what you run into when somebody spots an animal. A few goats are up on the rocks, this is East of the tunnels

    I believe you mean Zions

There was a herd of maybe 15 of them just east of the tunnels causing all kinds of excitement and camera clicks

I think it was @trackrunner who had in his sig that little graphic illustrating the word Zions with a red slash through the "s" at the end, with a comment saying "Zion is a Nat'l Park, Zions is a bank." Or something like that.
It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

If I saw the "Greatest of All Time" Desert Big Horn Sheep, I would have stopped to.

That's what you really meant to say, right?

Alright so you guys are my peeps and I'm a troll, so I shot this video with my stabilized GoPro to look like drone footage. I added the drone audio from some YouTube clip out there.

Drones are banned hardcore from National Parks, I'm just curious how crazy the reactions will be from this spoof I just made. If my family's lives are threatened I'll probably have to take it down.

I just laughed my ass off from that video that you made.
Suddenly my feet are feet of mud
    It all goes slo-mo
    I don't know why I am crying
    Am I suspended in Gaffa?
