    Notre Dame burns

I am not typically a real sentimental guy, but this really sucks. 800 years of history and a symbol of human ingenuity destroyed. It was one of the few tourist traps that was as impressive as they say.

This really stinks. I was going there in a few weeks. So sad.....

That's truly awful. I've always wanted to see that building in person but haven't had the opportunity yet.

    Sooooo....terrorists or too many candles?

I'm surprised that there's that much wood in that structure; I always thought it was made of mostly stone.
It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

The construction company is currently being blamed.

A tragedy to be certain. Glad I was able to see it in my lifetime..

Other than AU and NZ, I've seen the world and its treasures (and horrors).

Super tragic such an iconic structure will be in ruins..

    Notre Dame burns

I snapped this picture on the inside back in 2014. I was bummed to see it burning that badly.

I read somewhere that a plot to bomb it 3 days ago was foiled but that could be total BS made up on the spot.

Here's my obligatory "I'll miss Notre Dame" post with photos from '99

not surprising - huge renovation project , old dry timbers coated in a flammable finish, electric power cords, flammable solvents, waste rags , betcha a few lithium battery chargers up in the scaffold, maybe a clandestine ciggy somewhere, hopefully not using wooden scaffold planks - it would be really hard to get a zero fire risk level established. Wife and I visited there in 1980.

As I watched it burn to the ground, I was curious if they had any helicopter crew that could drop fire retardant, but it seems like they were content to spray a fine mist into the tops of the flames to gently soothe the fire from getting a headache.

I heard they were worried about the damage from dropping fire retardant. I sure hope these people are in charge of more catastrophes.

I saw a similar post with a link to an article, possibly similar to this one: https://www.usnews.com/news/world/ar...ris-notre-dame

But, then it was noted that the article was from 2016.

I don't know, but I will trust the firefighters and engineers on this one. I'd also say the firefighters seemed to do quite the yeoman's work in there. If you look at after photos of the inside it looks much better than I expected considering the inferno they were dealing with.

Hey a lot of people trusted the construction crew too and look what happened

Then he has the nerve to get up in front of everyone and tell them that the pursuit of wealth is evil. Seriously. You can't make this stuff up.

The biggest landowner in the UK (after the Royal Family) is the Church of England. And they have the cheek to put the begging bowls out at every service (not that I go to Church any more). But I do visit religious buildings

Mind you, the CofE have some magnificent Cathedrals (which are magnificent only from a structural/architectural view). I do like religious buildings (be they Mormon churches in SLC, Catholic churches in Poland or Christian churches in England, or Mosques in Istanbul. The vast majority are beautiful structures.

Most English / UK battles were fought on religious grounds (The Crusades) and Northern Ireland "Troubles" spring to mind. So nothing changes .
