I just finished reading 5 different books about WWII and the Eastern Front. 3 were written by German soldiers and 2 by Russian soldiers... the brutally by both sides was unbelievable. The raping, murdering and torture to both military and civilians by both sides was nearly incomprehensible. Those guys made the ISIS tortures and beheadings look like beginners.

If you are interested in WWII history from the German point of view I suggest these books, and probably in this order, but not really required in any order. The Faust books are short and fast paced and you want to read Tiger Tracks first as that is the correct order chronologically.
Tiger Tracks - Wolfgang Faust
The Last Panther - Wolfgang Faust
Sniper on the Eastern Front - Sepp Allerberger
D Day through German Eyes - Book one - Holger Eckhertz
D Day through German Eyes - Book two - Holger Eckhertz
I read really a lot of history books, usually a couple books a week for the past 45 years. My preference is military history from a first person point of view. If you want to know about anything in history I can probably recommend a good book to read on the subject.
Sniper on the Eastern Front might be the most brutal of the books as some of the savagery is surreal. Some of the events still in my head include him finding Russian soldiers smoking the flesh of a dead soldier over a fire for rations, a dead pregnant woman who has had her stomach slit open with the fetus impaled on a bayonet, a Hungarian woman gang raped by 23 russian soldiers in front of her husband and when they are finished they kill her by sticking a flare gun up her cootchie and pulling the trigger.
D-Day was interesting because the average German soldier couldn't figure out why the US was fighting the German's and not joining them in fighting the Fascist Russians. Some really interesting thoughts we don't get through American history books. There is not nearly the brutality in D-Day as everyone fighting on the western front had a sense of honor and right, or at least the best you could expect in total war..

Good hell.... That has to mess with a person -- not just the ones on the receiving end of the violence, but on the other end as well. My dad still bears emotional scars from his tour of duty in Vietnam. He was infantry fighting west of Saigon in Cu Chi and Tay Ninh. Still has nightmares sometimes.
This is a good point that I never thought of before. The Germans must have been completely baffled that we would side with the Russians. It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

The average German soldier didn't really understand the extreme politics. They were taught that they were eventually going to be forced into a war with Fascist Russian and the best way to win that war was to unite all western Europe under one banner.
After taking France and the low countries Germans were taught we are all now one big happy family with the strength to defeat Russian. And all the defeated western countries actually sent troops to fight the Russians along side the Germans, which is something else we never hear about.
We are also never taught that a lot of the western wall was manned by Russian troops who had surrender to Germany early in the war and switched sides. After D Day any Russian troops the allies captured were immediately handed over to the Russians who executed them as deserters. The Russians actually had ships on D Day off the coast to immediately collect the "traitors". The US handed over tens of thousands of captured ex Russians to be murdered by Stalin.
When I was in college I lived with my German girlfriend for a couple of years. She's the one that first pointed out to me our history books were extremely one sided and was nothing like the history they were taught.
Anyhoo... interesting stuff.
