Mario Andretti in 1969 took his Hawk Ford up Pikes Peak Finished 4th in what I'm assuming to be the Unlimited Class. (I could also be wrong about that.) When I found this, I had to pick myself up off the floor. Of course, now that the road is completely paved we'll never know who could actually pull off this same amazing feat today in the dirt/gravel using the current DW12 IndyCar chassis.

The Blue Flame is shown as it performs test runs just before 30-year-old Gary Gabelich set the new land auto speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, on Nov. 4, 1970. The $500,000 rocket-propelled car, which averages 622.407 miles per hour, was powered by liquified natural gas and hydrogen peroxide propellants.

Phoenix International Raceway was always a favorite NASCAR destination of mine. Loved the old configuration of the track with the concrete wall that extended out into turn 2 that had to be repainted anytime cars had been on the track. Also loved being in Phoenix around Halloween time to enjoy an extended summer in the Valley of the Sun.

The 1992 Pyroil 500K was the first race Winston Cup Race I'd ever seen live. We were blown away. Such an amazing event.

To top it off, 3 of my favorite drivers were all competing for the championship. Bill Elliott (all time favorite), Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison were all so close in points that the championship was up for grabs in, what was then, the closest battle in modern history.

The only races left were Phoenix and Atlanta.

I talked my friend Curtis, who loved racing his own stuff but was not really into Nascar, into joining me for the trip. The guy is one of those people that just have amazing luck. Here I am, looking through the chain link fence, trying to get a glimpse of some action in the garage area and the next thing I see was my buddy walking through the garage like he was lost. I was green with envy.

I finally got his attention and through the fence he told me that there was a fight at the gate and while the security guards weren't looking he slipped past and went on in. I handed him my camera so he could snap the photos I only wish I could take.

And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...here he is watching Tim Brewer work on my favorite drivers car.

So here are some real life F1 photos of the movie "Rush". I around when Niki Lauda and James Hunt both raced, they were good friends, not just competitors. They actually shared an apartment at one time. The car shots are from the old bridge across the former front straight at Watkins Glen.

If you have never seen the movie Rush you should watch it as it's the best racing movie of all time.

Before his accident Niki Lauda used to sign his photos below his face, after the accident, he signed them right across his face.

Dan Gurney once shipped a Chevrolet Impala SS to England to kick Jaguars ass....

The Big Eagle thought he could win the British Saloon Car Championship with a mostly stock Chevy Impala SS. He was so successful, the Brits banned him.

Doesn’t @Iceaxe have a saying about bumper stickers on hot cars?

A hot chick with a tattoo is like putting a bumper sticker on a Ferrari.

I might not be able to name all my cousins or even recognize some of them if I walk past them on the street, but I can name every driver in this photo from Pocono in 1985.
