Worn out Pirana after 15 Rappels, all under 100 feet, is this normal?
See pictures below. There are deep grooves with edges that are starting to get sharp where the rope was running.
Rope was a new Imlay Canyonero 9.2 for 11/15 rappels. 5/15 rappels were done on that same new Canyonero, only after it was very wet, muddy, and covered in grit. I didn't notice any significant grooves until the canyon where things got very wet and muddy.
Is this normal? I'm assuming I should go ahead and buy a replacement? If my caribiners had grooves this deep I'd toss them for sure. Any tips for making a pirana last longer? Or tips for keeping a rope cleaner when pulling it into a muddy pothole? Thanks in advance.

It's not uncommon -- especially if the ropes are wet and are carrying a lot of sand and grit. I've seen a brand new carabiner get sawed about 1/3 of the way through the aluminum on ONE trip through a very wet and muddy Imlay. Needless to say, that biner got retired after that trip.
Another reason to keep your ropes clean and out of the mud. It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

On a related note--your piranha is not even close to worn out.

Ok, great, good to know. I was a little worried about the sharp-ish edges of the rope groove wearing on the rope? Have you ever had any issues with that?
Also, any advice for keeping ropes out of the mud/water/sand? Especially on long rappels where you're using the entire rope and the area to pull it into is a muddy pothole? Haven't figured that one out yet.
