Why do I see people walking around on the beach? I thought they told everybody to get the hell outta there because the storm of the century was on the doorstep.
???
It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

Kind of a testament though, to piling construction.
must be bolted up good.
But ya can't keep moving metal on wood without eventual failure.

I'm supposed to be heading to Myrtle Beach in 2-1/2 weeks. I hope it's still there.
Are we there yet?

True that. It must be really well built.
I'm not an engineer, but I've been making there stuff bolt up for 20 years now. I know that allowing a structure to move in the wind (and in this case, the waves too) is much better than building it so stiff it can't move at all. The movement allows the entire structure to resist the load rather than just a few of the members.
At least, that's my basic understanding of how things have been explained to me.....

All I can say is I hope those stragglers on the beach have made their peace with God. I've been through more storms than I care to remember but thankfully was living in SLC when Katrina struck. Went back to Louisiana for about 8 years and had a few brushes but it was mostly rain and area flooding. The first really bad hurricane I remember was Camille when I was a kid and the last was Andrew. Nothing like being without power for days and the heat and humidity levels off the chart. I don't miss the stress and anxiety of these kind of storms.
Now, I live in the desert southwest and only have to be concerned with drought, flash flooding, wildfires and earthquakes.Never regret anything that made you smile!

Watching the morning news and the pier is still standing.
And the link to the pier above is a Facebook video and not a live cam.
