Anybody with the knowledge feeling generous enough to gift the approximate location to the rappel into the happy section?
Do you know about how much it cuts off the approach?

Also, anyone that has been through Egypt rd. and down by the Escalante river:

1) Comment on road conditions?
2) Comment on river water levels?

Thanks yall. I wasnt familiar with the location so I was curious if and how much it shaved off. I dont think the riparian section is ugly, and im also ok with poison ivy. Ive been down there once and Il lbe down there this weekend and thought a different approach could be interesting. Still curious about the location, road conditions and water levels if anyone has info.

I can't imagine that you would eliminate very much of the approach by dropping into the happy section and skipping the Riparian section. My comment is why would you hike all that way and skip a fun and gorgeous section of the canyon? Yes, there is poison ivy but unless you are deathly allergic and any contact could be fatal, you can avoid it in that section. It is an awesome canyon and I highly recommend that you do the whole thing if you are going to pay the price to hike there.

You're not cutting out much distance by bypassing the riparian section. Besides, the riparian section is a great place to top off your water supply. And it's a gorgeous section of canyon.

To answer your question though, it would shave off between one to two hours depending on how fast you hike, how many people you have, how fast you can rappel, etc.


For poison ivy control, you can wear your full wet suit through that entire section and you’ll be fine. If no wet suit, thoroughly scrub your body with Dawn soap a few hours after contact so a rash doesn’t form.

I get poison ivy reaction bad and I wash thoroughly after playing in canyons with poison ivy and since that day I started doing that, have not had a reaction.

Of course if poison ivy is a concern, be sure to wash backpacks with Dawn soap too.
