Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Arizona Pedestrian

SAN FRANCISCO — A woman in Tempe, Ariz., died after being hit by a self-driving car operated by Uber, in what appears to be the first known death of a pedestrian struck by an autonomous vehicle on public roads.

The Uber vehicle was in autonomous mode with a human safety driver at the wheel when it struck the woman, who was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, the Tempe police said in a statement. The episode occurred overnight, although the authorities did not specify whether it was late Sunday or early Monday. The woman was not publicly identified.

An Uber spokeswoman said the company was “fully cooperating” with the local authorities. The company said it had suspended testing of its self-driving cars in Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.

You bet...all the electronic doo-dads I've owned seem to fart every now and then. Even this fancy Apple computer I'm on right now. I'd bet 10G the first people to go to Mars won't make it.

Indeed, when I heard about this yesterday they said nothing about a human being in the car.

I'm surprised they released that footage. Some will say the human should have paid more attention so he could stop it, but we were all watching this expecting it to happen and it was still too fast to react.

Did you see the video of the person who was in the car? He/she/it wasn't even paying attention...playing with a phone, it looked to me.

So they have these super smart college educated brainiacs design and build this thing, go through all the negotiations to get it on the road...and then put it out there among moving targets with a moran behind the wheel.

Yeah he was definitely on his phone, but I doubt he would have had the chance to avoid it otherwise.

I was waiting and watching for the accident and still I didn't have enough time to think about correcting it.
