All preface with this, that I have been here since 2006. Not the longest member but old enough to watch a LOT of changes over the years.

My first thought, and it’s a wild one, is to take Bogley back to UUtah.com or something similar. Watching the countless posts over the years, many TRs and threads just aren’t non-Utah specific. Except for outdoors news or gear. The point isn’t to eliminate non-Utahans from posting at all although it may be interpreted that way. I would dare say that 98% of all posts relates to Utah.

With that, the thought would be to make Utah-oriented again but with the addition of “outside of Utah” (or something similar). It may seem like rearranging chairs on the titanic but I think it serves a purpose and will make the forum feel “better” or more suited for everyone.

Another thought is to eliminate or consolidate the very dead sub-forums. Clean up the dead leaves so to speak.

Another thought is that posting a TR is tedious and does take up a lot of time like Rockgremlin has stated. If that process was easier, it would be a major incentive to others to post more TRs. I’m specially looking at the picture management or attaching photos. That is a mess, no offense personally, but it just is. That there alone would motivate me more to post more TRs. I try to post the good ones where I can, but a TR just takes a lot of time.

Another thing that I noticed is that when someone posts a length or detailed TR and no one relplies or comments for days on it, it kinda sucks. That is very demotivating. I’m
not saying every member needs to comment but a few more comments than just one is very persuasive for the person to stay and contribute more to the site. And to those who care, will.

Another thing, the spam prevention needs to be updated (or something) 100 fold.

Perhaps another site look is in order too. Strictly aesthetics - but it does help. Gotta take a little pride in it.

Those are just a few thoughts on the tip of my tongue...

    Here's another thing to consider:

Personally, I don't post a lot of trip reports because I don't like splashing my personal life around the internet. I value my internet anonymity - highly. I don't have (nor never will have) a Facebook account, I don't Snapchat, and the only thing on my Instagram account are funny videos and memes that I've collected over the years. Nothing personal.

I used to document and post to this site frequently, but as I get older I have a desire to slip into the shadows and remain there, basking in the safety of anonymity.

    Just like my avatar.

    Just some reading from above:

^^^Couldn't agree more. This NEEDS to happen.
It's only "science" if it supports the narrative.

Anyway, for anyone who thinks that it is just because it is winter, here is a quick graph I made using Bogley Canyoneering Threads as an example (of course any other sub forum could be used as well; I just use canyoneering because it used to have a lot of posts.

In January 2018, there are six active threads in the canyoneering forum that have been posted in at least once. Here's how January 2018 compares with previous years. This is just an observation, not a complaint.

Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

Yes, I agree with that. It's dated. My 2 cents? Just make a Politics Sub-Forum? That seems obvious.

His wife is smokin' hot, but I'd take Daniels any day over the old lady. I don't blame the Prez one bit for tryin' to get a piece of that.

On my end, I used to do a lot of trip reports in the canyoneering forum. Nowadays, we do canyons that already have numerous reports done on them or we are doing canyons that we don't want to do a report on. Times have just changed a little and the content has also.

We can only post so many pictures of the popular canyons before everyone gets bored of them, they never get commented on, and it seems like nobody really cares or even wants to see them

Nah...I disagree. I just posted one up with some cool pics...they're fun! It's always nice to read something and see the pics, no matter if it's the same places or not. I like seeing the people, too.

Fighting off laziness is job #1.

Your current post of pics is good, and is unique. But you can't criticize to fight off laziness. You have 3 total trip reports

Do not take my sarcasm the wrong way.

I've started threads in the hunting forums and off roading forums and they are completely useless I have decided.

The canyoneering forum seems to be the only one that gets a decent amount of use, and that is even pretty low anymore

It's all good. And you're right with only 3 in a year. When I was here under the username Byron I had a bunch of TRs.

Baja certainly is interesting, but I'm gonna try to put up more of the in between stuff. That's the laziness part I'm talking about.

No way man, I'd flotus that FLOTUS everyday of the week over Stormy. You ever see the last episode Season 1 of Silicon Valley where they whiteboard how they can jerk off 1000 dudes at a conference in 10 minutes? Stormy has had too many D2F's, Hot Swaps and Busted P@nis'. I'm sure Donald spreads it, or maybe not since Baron Von Trump, Melania is a no brainer.

Disagree. The rise of Facebook has been a HUGE factor. Maybe the biggest of them all.

Completely agree and wish more people would post TR’s and talk about the outdoors. It’s so easy on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others. Everybody and their dog (literally) are on those platforms. They have unlimited resources as well to advance the platform.

Also couple that with the fact that I don't document nearly as much as I used to. When I was younger I would take pictures of everything and do these massive TRs. Ain't got time for that anymore.

This site belongs to the community, kinda like the community pool. The question; how do we fix it and who is willing to help?

If they post a TR on Social Media then what is it worth? I post pics on social media when I'm camping in a chair in the Swell with a 5th of Whiskey in my hand. I'd never put a technical information about routes on it.

I may know and have been on trips with TR Canyoneering posters. I'll ask their opinion, this site should be tightened down imo. I can't keep this Stormy Daniels bit up forever....

I would hardly say the Golden Age of Canyoneering has passed. Maybe yours.

There is still a lot out there for a lot of people, and a lot more people to do it also.

Maybe so, but Canyoncollective has 33 active threads so far this month. That's about 3 times more than all of the Bogley Subforums added together. Bogley used to be at least equal in popularity than Canyoncollective. Of course that's a different topic already hashed out.

It seems to me that there are more reasons than just the Golden Age of Canyoneering is over and it's because of Facebook. I guess it's of little consequence though.
