To me, it is not so much the picture itself, but the story behind it.
My picture is quite bland. Here's the story behind this particular photo; I'll hope you will forgive the reasoning.
It is of the Colorado where it passes Moab, and the UMTRA works. So why is this picture important to me in 2017?
My reasoning: I first came to Moab (and of course Arches NP) as a naive spotty touristy youth in 1986 and in the intervening years I have come to love the rugged areas of southern Utah. Despite living in the UK, I have visited this beautiful area about 30 times since then. In the last ten of those years, I have occasionally joined the Bogley group and learned (and enjoyed) canyoneering here, and other southern Utah canyoneering locations too.
I have come to learn about the mineral mining history of this southern Utah region, when from the late forties to modern times, mining concessions were granted, and more significantly, deposits of Uranium and other valuable minerals were found and mined. The process of concentrating these minerals caused vast areas to become contaminated, so the UMTRA (Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action) project was formed to move these deposits to a safer place. Hence what looks like an open-cast mine in the lower RHS of my photo.
Further, in the upper centre, is the new bridge crossing the Colorado of route 191; I've crossed it over the many years of my visits, during its various stages of construction.
But most significantly to me is that me, myself, I, took this photo on my own camera from my own fair hand, in April 2017 from my own 1946-vintage Taylorcraft aeroplane, having flown it from the Chicago area ten days before.
I've been a vintage aircraft pilot since 1991 (in the UK and Europe), and one of my greatest ambitions since driving and canyoneering around southern Utah has always been to fly over the places I have come to love in Utah.
2017 was the year that I achieved this little ambition.

Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.
