    Spam posters on the increase

I never see these spammers on any other forum I frequent; how come it's so prevalent here? The seem relatively benign, but use the thread prefixes.

My admin privileges were activated less than a month ago and I've already deleted/banned at least 20 - 30 users.

I blame it on the Russian hackers.

I wonder if getting rid of the [Prefix] thread will get rid of it?

I've disabled new users from posting until they have been validated by an actual human. Kind of a pain for the admin, but it will have to do until we get a stronger blocker for these spammers.

As sites become more and more popular, spammers target them. They watch the traffic and popularity on search engines to determine their target. While bogley has slow periods of users posting (especially in the winter) the actual users posting is a small percentage of overall traffic. The traffic from search engines is far greater from a percentage standpoint.

Much of the traffic is "lurkers" who surf in for some information and many of them never register. While others lurk for many years. Anyways, hope this helps.

You guys would be surprised, I'm looking at the spam blocker logs and even in today's log, 12/4, there are just under 100 spammers denied registration. So it's still working, the spammer techniques just evolve over time and then the spam blockers adapt.

We've seen this strange trend lately where spammers will link to sites with sports match titles. This will be just another phase and it will die back down again. Thanks for bearing with us, and thanks for you guys that are able to delete the spam threads before the other folks see them.
