Man falls 80 feet while rappelling in Zion's Englestead Hollow

ENGLESTEAD HOLLOW, Kane County — A 38-year-old New Hampshire man died after falling approximately 80 feet while rappelling in a canyon east of Zion National Park Sunday morning, authorities said.

Emergency responders were dispatched to a report of a fall at Englestead Hollow at about 11 a.m., according to Kane County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Alan Alldredge.

The man, who was not identified, was hiking with four siblings toward the Narrows at Zion National Park, which included a series of rappels at Englestead Hollow near the park.

During the first rappel, the man fell during the last 80 feet of a 300-foot descent, where he suffered leg, hip and back injuries, Alldredge said.

He said a Department of Public Safety helicopter, which happened to be in nearby Garfield County at the time, was dispatched to the scene after another medical helicopter was unable to land at the canyon because of trees in the area.

A doctor from another hiking group in the area attended to the man until emergency responders could arrive. The DPS team, a nurse from the other helicopter and a National Parks search and rescue team were eventually able to reach the fallen man but the man died at the scene, Alldredge said.

He added responders were able to take the rest of the hiking group and other bystanders out of the canyon and hoisted the man’s body, where it was taken to a nearby mortuary and then to the state medical examiner’s office.

The cause of the fall remains under investigation.

It was also the second major fall in the county’s canyons east of Zion National Park in the last 10 days. On Aug. 25, a canyoneering guide was hospitalized after falling at least 75 feet while rappelling at Birch Hollow.

This is really unfortunate. We were down to do Orderville & Pine Creek over the weekend. We watched the rescue helicopter make 4 or 5 trips back to Englestead as it was getting dark.
