From '04 to '15 I spent Jan. and Feb. on the big island. Just living out of a rental car, camping and hitting a motel or B+B once in a while. Great island to relax and hang out.

Anyway, I'm very familiar with the lava, having hiked to it in the park and just outside the boundary...no man's land. This whole area that's getting blasted right now has had a date with death and everyone there knew it. It's on the Eastern Rift Zone and it's spewed big flows in the last 100 years. They built a subdivision right along the northern edge of the big crack, hoping that would save them. Nope.

Disposable houses, really. A real bummer is that this eruption buried some awesome snorkeling and a hot spring. A campground, too. The history of Kilauea is interesting.
