Did someone trigger it and let everyone know when it was happening?

TELLURIDE, Colo. — Several people stood on the streets of the tiny southwest Colorado town of Telluride to watch a huge avalanche that was triggered Thursday.

Visit Telluride/Aldera Creative posted video of the slides on Ajax Peak at the end of the box canyon, east of the secluded resort town.

A helicopter with tour agency Helitrax dropped bombs high up on the mountain, causing two slides down the steep slopes about 30 seconds into the video.

The town was notified about the avalanche mitigation and the road was closed at the east end of the canyon.

Officials with Visit Telluride said the town has received 95 inches of snow this month, the snowiest January on record in the past 40 years. The avalanche mitigation was done as a precaution.

Officials said Ajax is bombed every four to five years when conditions mandate it.

Bridal Veil Road is seen in the path of the avalanche. The road, which provides access to the popular Brial Veil Falls in the summer, is closed in the winter, but crews might have to clear it of debris in the winter.
