    Down near the border....

Yesterday was pretty hot down near the border. Nevertheless, a visitation to a couple of sites was in order....

    Down near the border....

In the 3rd pic, with those indentations, do people have idea on how those formed by chance?

Perhaps it's similar to how potholes are formed on the Colorado Plateau?

I think it is from years of grinding with pestles. It seems like the ones that I've seen that were used 'relatively' recently (actual time passed unknown), the inner surfaces can be quite smooth. These particular mortars appear to have weathered a bit since they were last used.

This is in the area of my old stomping grounds. Spent a few years jeeping and hiking Anza Borrego, et al. Although my favorite border area is off the El Camino Del Diablo.
