Glitter Mountain AZ near St George
Glitter Mountain is the unofficial name, but it's about 10 miles outside of St George, SouthEast from the new airport. You'll be driving on a dirt road, passable by car, for about 7 of those miles, and you'll cross over into Arizona. I learned of this place while running into Wayne while I was taking Porter on the Bear Claw Poppy trail, so it was just by sheer luck we found out about this place.
The kids loved it. Basically they were mining their own "gems", crystals out of the side of an open pit mine.
I'm not quite sure what type of crystal it is, I was thinking Topaz, but I thought Topaz was more of a yellowish color. Any ideas on the type of crystal/mineral here?
Anyways, I made a quick trip to Harbor Freight, got some hammers, chisels, gloves and glasses, and these kids were ready to bust some gems out of the mountain.
I was surprised at how clear and transparent some of these were, like looking right through a window.
Who else has been here? Once I heard about it, I started learning of others who went too. Probably 4 or 5 of my facebook friends had been here, 3 on the same day just by coincidence! It's getting very popular it seems.

Very cool. Good idea for kids. I've been past it on my dirt bike. Maybe we'll take our kids out there today.
