So I'm sitting in a diner having breakfast this morning and a song come on that I haven't heard in a loooong time...the "disco" version of the Star Wars Theme. It's got the disco beat with sound effects from the movie thrown in. The first time I heard that song, it was quite profound.

1977, I was 13 years old and this song came out several months after Star Wars became a super hit...I thought "Oh, Christ...is nothing sacred?"

It was then, at the age, that I realized everything that can be milked dry will be.

I guess when you make up the bet yourself then make it happen, they don't like that very much.

This reminds me of when I was in the Navy...1983. I was out to sea on an aircraft carrier (USS Independence) when they announced two things were going to happen that day. First, they'd be testing the new Phalanx close-in defense system...imagine a white R2D2 that's about 8 feet tall with a six barrel machine gun sticking out the bottom. It's designed to shoot down planes, boats, missiles...anything that comes near the ship that isn't supposed to. They had one on each corner of the ship. The big white thing is a radar that tracks the object and the gun shoots these giant bullets (rapid fire) that tear the thing to pieces. Secondly, they were going to fly an F-14 over the ship at greater than supersonic speed.

So I'm up on the deck to witness these things and about a mile away a jet flies by parallel to the ship...shortly after a large missile came into view...it was a drone that was "locked on" to the aircraft. At that moment the Phalanx lit up...it went "Brrrrrrrt" for about 2 seconds and the missile dropped into the ocean. Everybody cheered.

I remember thinking "Wouldn't this be a more accurate test if the missile was coming at the ship?"...but of course they weren't going to do that...I reckon they wanted to make sure it worked, period. This is when they were brand new.

Soon after that, the F-14 flew over the ship...just like in this video. Funny thing about that, though...in this video the thing flies by so fast you can barely see it, but when I saw the same thing the jet seemed to be moving in "slo-mo"...it was moving fast, but I could clearly see the aircraft and it was surrounded by a "fog"...kinda blurry as it went over the ship and then KABOOM! I'll never forget that...the blurry F-14.

Believe it or not, this was my very first car (used) that my parents helped me buy. I wish I had photos (packed away somewhere I'm sure - this one I found online) because the numbers 429 were on the side of the hood scoop, maroon with a spoiler. 1969 Mustang fastback. My Dad had a Shell location with 6 mechanic bays and I worked after school in the office. The mechanics always wanted to "play" with my car whenever I was at work. I had the best running vehicle in town! Of course, not knowing that I was driving a classic, I couldn't wait to get a brand new car! It's been awhile, but last time I checked Hemmings motorbook, the car was valued around $45K+.

Never regret anything that made you smile!

    /\/\/\ Sweet!!!

In 1985 my uncle Bob bought my cousin Tasha a '69 Mach 1 for her birthday...it had a 351 and a 4 speed manual tranny. It was in showroom condition inside and out. Her brother (my cousin Bobby, and my best friend) had a '67 Fastback GTA with a 289 and he was soooo jealous! He had it for about 3 years but always had transmission problems with that thing.

Anyway, uncle Bob had to sell it within a few months and buy her something much more tame because she couldn't handle it...it overwhelmed her.

Everyone always talks about the car they had when young.... forgetting that to be worth much it must be restored at some point in time...

Which basically means a $45k Mustang had $60k dumped into it at some point in its life.

The cheapest classic you can buy is one that has already been restored.
