Utah and a possible government shutdown Oct. 2015.

Hello all. I'm planning a trip to Lake Powell for a week and leave next weekend. I know a government shutdown is looming in the background, but I'm wondering if any of you have heard anything about keeping Lake Powell and the rest of your National Parks and Monuments open if this happens? I remember your state leaders said last time, that they would try and keep them open if this kind of nonsense happened again.

We were lucky last time when this happened and due to low lake levels, ended up boating at Table Rock Lake in Missouri. The Army Corp of Engineers are in charge of that lake and all they did was shut down their campgrounds......but not the lake. I'd hate to spend our vacation at Powell just to get cut short by another shut down. Any rumors or advice are greatly appreciated.

In my experience, when there is a Government Shutdown, the Government tries to make the public feel it as much as possible in order to help the public feel better about all the Government does for us with our money. Last time the rangers were still paid to be at the parks, but they were paid to keep people out.

Last government shutdown, October 6-7, 2013:

Turnoff from UT-24 to Hans Flat

    UT-24 just north of Hanksville

    Hite Overlook:

Road from near Hite to Hans Flats/the Maze:

    Little Wild Horse Canyon trailhead:

The state was slow to react last time (or perhaps the feds were slow to allow it). Not sure if they'll be any faster if it happens again.

I totally agree. I'm hope if it does happen again, the great state of Utah will be defiant and keep it's national treasures open to the public. I think we're going to try it and hope for the best.
