It was awesome and humbling. I realize that I have much to learn to safely take my son out alone but after the trip realized that we will be doing much more of this!

It was a great time! As Canyons go I have no valuable input as this was my first. I can say I thought it was beautiful! I am told we were lucky and caught some unusually cool weather for late spring. the hike was easily done by my 9 year old, and he did very well with his rappels. Our guide, "Gar" was awesome! He was very knowledgeable about the flora/fauna and the geology of the region. He also took the time to go over the rigging and answered any and all of my technical questions. The way he was able to build confidence in my son was both welcome and impressive... The trip was flawless all except for me leaving my water bottle at the top of the first rappel, like the "newb" I am.

Yeah, we opted to do the rappel at pool arch, he was incredible!... I honestly wasn't sure how he'd do, but he was awesome

Next year I don't think a canyon is in order. We'll have the whole family. We are planning on a camping/backpacking road tour... Iowa-Black Hills-Yellowstone NP-Salt Lake City, Ut-San Francisco- and 3-4 days up the coast to Seattle and fly home... We have about 14 days so lots of versatility in our trip

And I learned from this trip to rent a car instead of killing my own... Moab killed my jeep pretty much. I got back and traded it off

I don't know if you have driven to those places, but 14 days for that trip wouldn't be versatile at all. You going to spend at least half the time driving! Personally, I would not recommend trying that trip in 14 days.

You're doing something wrong, my Toyota Tacoma has seen literally hundreds of days and thousands of miles in the backcountry of Moab and still looks like the day it came off the showroom floor.

That sounds like a lot more road and a lot less backpacking to me, just to get your expectations straight.

As far as road tours go taking the 101 up the coast is a great drive. One of my family's favorites (I'm 2 miles from the 101 in Oregon at this very moment). But it is one hell of a long drive, and more draining than most.

It, plus some short side trips inland could easily fill a 14 day vacation. There is so much beer along here, you (or I. I currently) could spend 14 days just stumbling from brewery to brewery.

I think you might know this, but most of the drive between Black Hills and Yellowstone sucks worse than your original Bogley handle. And Salt Lake through Nevada is even worse! I bet I could think of 2 Pauly Shore movies better than those drives.

Your last trip with your boy looked like it turned out pretty great though. I'm sure next years will as well.
