    What is this?

Two years ago we were in South Fork Coal Wash in the northwestern San Rafael Swell and saw this strange seep:

My question: Is this a Oil-(Tar-)seep? The fluid was bluish black.

I believe it's an oil seep. There are a few of them in Coal Wash and Saddle Horse Canyon. They stop flowing in cold weather.

When mother nature does that, it's cool!

When man does that, it's an environmental disaster, requiring millions to clean up.

Those seeps stink of sulfur and there are varying colors. I've seen red/green and the black'ish.

Good point, but keep in mind that just because something occurs naturally and is organic (like that seep above), doesn't mean that it isn't toxic. Would you want the stuff in the photo in your drinking water? Would you drink that seep? I should as h*** wouldn't.

How is the volume relation between a Deepwater Horizion disaster and this little seep?
