Only this one is much, much bigger than anything in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Almost anything around Big Cottonwood can be climbed in a day; this one takes a month.

Oh, I know it's magnitude dwarfs BCC, it just appears to me like the peaks around BCC (on paper). The photo doesn't do it justice.

Without. This is actually a long way from where there are Sherpas living. Khan Tengri is in the former Soviet Union up on the border of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Sherpas are in Nepal; a long way to the southeast, but they do get hired to climb in places like the Karakorum on occasion.

I figured there weren't any Sherpas up that way. What's the travelling situation like for places like that for NorteAmericanos these days with the political unrest in Russia these days?

Personally, I wouldn't go to the areas around Ukraine, but Khan Tengri is a long way from that and is distanced away from what is happening in Russia. It's about 2000 miles away from that situation, which is a good thing, because I wouldn't want to be near there right now.

I assume that it's a pain to get a visa to Russia right now. Actually, it has always been a pain, especially if you have ever been in the US military. I'm not that eager to go back to Russia anytime soon, though they do have beautiful mountains. Here is a photograph that was taken on our trip to Russia:
