This is not the first victory. That was Death Valley, saved from a Zion type permit system, but this feels huge. Hank says it was accomplished in record time, this permit system that gives us access to the best canyon in a whole region. That may be so, but it felt agonizing slow, the wait. All the calls, e-mails, meetings, service projects, follow up, follow up, follow up, another service project, reminders, reminders, reminders. I am sure the land managers are happy this is over, or so they think. Getting the permit on-line? Making it easier in the future? More work to do.

Sonny Lawrence deserves the praise of the whole community. He was relentless. He gave up a trip, lost a plane ticket and kept at it. A lot of times these negotiations have to occur out of the public eye. Most often to give our land manager allies the cover they need and it may look like nothing is happening. Sometimes it FEELS like nothing is happening. These volunteers at CAC deserve your thanks and praise. If you have not joined, join. It's free.

About the first question we are asked by land managers is "how many members you got?" It's the least you can do. And buy Sonny or any other of these folks a beverage next time you see them. My faith is restored. Grand Canyon Management Plan is next up.

I couldn't find it on the CAC website, but does anyone know how many members the CAC has grown to?
